As the "gun guy" to my friends, these questions come up every now and then as people with in hush tones say something like "hey, you carry a gun right? Where can I take a class and which gun do you reccomend"

Now 99% of these people never really follow through and don't end up carrying but the few that do always want to know about something small. I always refer them to this page. Again the 32acp is great for a pocket gun. Anything bigger means a step up in gun size.

Click here and then click to magnify to full size. The J-frame is on the bottom for reference and is significantly bigger

Default Deep Concealment Choice

I only saw one other poster that uses my bug of choice, the Beretta 21A Bobcat 22LR. You all probably think we are crazy, but---- It's all metal so its got some heft, manual safety, tip up barrel, it's SA/DA, tiny and hides well in any pocket in a Desantis Nemesis holster (good with shorts and T Shirts. Only any good up to 15 feet but its louder and has more muzzel flash than most 357s. People say a 22 is not a serious self defense caliber, but how would you like to get 8 CCI Stinger HPs in the face? When confronted most bad guys will move on and find easier prey. I've found the gun and the CCI ammo to both be completely reliable. 22 ammo is cheap and always available.

JMOfartO:

Well, I've enjoyed reading all of the posts, and thought I'd add my 2c worth. Probably worth about that much, but here it is.

First I have the Seecamp in 32 & 380 cal. I also have two LCP's. (one with Innovative Arms sight upgrade and Crimson Trace laser, the 2nd, bone-stock).

FWIW I also have a couple of J-frame Smiths, and a Ruger LC9 as well.

Here's my take on what I chose to carry concealed:

1. LWS380 90% of the time in a Hedley rear pocket holster.
2. LCP (w/upgrades) the remaining 10% of the time in a L.Hedley rear pocket holster.

Here's why.

The Seecamp (in any caliber) is simply so darn tiny it can be carried easily concealed in ANY of my trousers rear pockets.
The LCP is a bit larger and WHEN it will fit in my trouser pockets it would be my first choice. (because of the external sights and laser and it's much easier to shoot than the LWS380).

For me personally any snubby is simply too "bulky" for ease of cc, (cylinder width) and the J-frames only offer 5 rounds anyway.

The LC9 is a wonderful "big brother" to the LCP, but again too large for rear pocket carry.

I have never found an easier way to carry a firearm concealed than the Seecamp in a rear pocket holster.. Never, and I've tried most of 'em.

IF a person asked me which Seecamp I would recommend for a person new to guns I'd say get the LWS32 without question. The LWS32 is pretty easy to shoot with very little "recoil/associated drama"..

I carry the LWS380 (w/fingertip extension) because I have it. I wanted one, I have one, so I carry one. But, knowing what I know now, I'd have been just as well off with the LWS32 I bought first.

In the world of concealed carry TINY is King... Never found a gun smaller or easier to conceal than my Seecamps. (I had a couple of NAA Guardians in 32cal. and they are just fine, do a great job, but in 32cal. you can buy a Seecamp rather than a Seecamp "clone" for about the same price. The NAA is a Seecamp clone.

IF you have larger rear pockets than I have, I'd suggest the LCP.. I love my LCP's, just wish they were the size of the Seecamp ~ they are not..

Finally I would suggest anyone considering a pocket rocket to forget about shooting beyond 7 yards, max. Practice at 3-7 yards until you can put 'em all in the center mass of a target, then go about your business. NO small cc gun is designed as a 15 yard target pistol, so don't expect accuracy from that distance with any of them.

For the person concerned about the expense of dedicated self defense rounds in the Seecamp?

Winchester White box Q4255's function perfectly in the LWS32's of both my wife and myself, and the Winchester White Box VP380 functions equally well in my LWS380. (These are truncated fmj rounds).

I wouldn't worry a whole lot about range time in a Seecamp or LCP.. Basically in a self defense situation it'll happen QUICKLY, at CLOSE UP and PERSONAL distance, and be OVER with few rounds fired..

Practice "point and shoot" from "close up and personal" distance and you've done about all you can to defend yourself.

Oh yeah.. For me RELIABILITY is JOB ONE in a self defense firearm.. All of our Seecamps AND our 3 LCP's (my wife has one of her own) have been so..

Good Shooting!

Jesse

I'd be more inclined to spend that $1,000 on three S&W 642s or 442s, and minimize the boot grips as much as possible for deepest concealment. Revolver reliability, .38 Special, and immediate delivery. My 2c.
Plus one! I pocket carry a 638 all day every day dress slacks, shorts, whatever. Plenty light for me and 38 special deadly!

FWIW:

I just gave a favorite step-son my 638 w/CT Lasergrips last month. It was my favorite snubby, but he had asked me several years ago (when I first purchased it) if I would let him "inherit" it one day. (I'm 69 lol)

Since I don't use my snubby's for cc anymore I figured I'd go ahead and give it to him now, and he was proud to get it.

I loved the smooth wide target trigger of the 638.

BTW, for those of you that might be new and playing along at home, this pocket rocket uses the 357 Magnum round. Enjoy.

The smallest handgun I ever carry is an older 642 (38spl) and my 60-9LS. + one reload.

For choices, put me down as another vote for the J-frame .38+P, if you can conceal it.

In my opinion a pocket-carry gun should never be your only weapon. I find it totally inaccessible when seated.

If I carry in my pocket, I always carry also on my ankle. Ankle carry is quite accessible when seated and is particularly good in the car when belted in. But it is not too good when standing, so the pocket-carry weapon (or hip carry) compliments it nicely.

Apologies if this appears to be a thread hijacking. It is not ... the thread has generated some valuable information for discussion and consideration.
I sold my 32 and kept my 380. I figured for the same size pistol why not go for the bigger caliber. It's not like I'm shooting it every day. As one poster said get some practice in at about 7 yards and call it a day. Is the 380 a handful? Yes, but I'd rather have the extra oomph when needed.
I paid about 850 for mine, while waiting almost 2 years. Mine was one of the first guns produced, Larry offered 32 owners first dibs at the new 380.
Can't argue with the fact that you can get 2 Airweights + ammo for the price of 1 Seecamp 380, BUT for deep concealment this gun cannot be beat. ymmv

For what it's worth, I spent an afternoon visiting Rex Applegate once. He had a Seecamp in his rear pocket (and probably more equalizers fairly close to hand as well). I'd consider that a significant endorsement.

I'm content with a 442 in that role.

Random thoughts... Carrying Little Bitty Guns.

Starting in 1965, I had just graduated from the Seventh Grade...

Conditions dictated that I needed a gun...
So I started carrying a Western 22 LR O/U derringer, with a pocket full of shells... It kept the older boys off of me...

So in the years that followed to Today, I have carried the following Little Bitty Guns, "LBG's".

But first, I must say that in 1967, I got my first 1911, and it has been my favorite every since, even today, but when I could not carry it I carried the LBG's.

For many years I carried a High Standard 22 Mag Derringer.
This handgun is actually one of the best LBG's on the Planet.

First it cannot jam, you will always get 2 shots. In a grapple situation, it will always shoot twice. I know of one State Police Agency that issued them to their Troopers as a No2. It is flat, light small, and if you practice pretty accurate. I can shoot a bear can off of your head at 10 yards every time and at 15 yards"most" of the time...

I still have this gun and still carry it quite a bit, as a No3 or a No4...
It rode in the front pocket of a Blue Jean Jacket for several years.

The Baby Browning in 25 ACP. I also carried this gun for several years, in my Blue Jean Jacket pocket. No matter if I was carrying another handgun[s] or not.
It was reliable and very small and handy.

I had one of the Freedom Arms 22 Mini revolvers for a while. It was small and handy, and with practice it was accurate. However it was slow for follow up shots. But you could carry 2 in every pocket you had and not even know it...

If you want/can carry a little bigger gun then there are the various LBC 32's.

I do not have a lot of experience with them, but they are a step above the 22/25 guns.

Getting into Little Guns [LG's]
I do have a lot of experience with the various 380's.
My favorite is the Browning 1910. The one I had was most reliable and most accurate, even at 25 yards.
I found it better than the Walthers, the HSC, the H&K, the SIG, Berretta and the Kahrs.

However I also found that if I carried a 380 in a belt holster, I could just as easily carry a 1911 Light Weight Commander in 45 ACP...

I think that the best Little Gun to carry is a 5 shot S&W J Frame.
It also makes a great No2. The advantages of a LG revolver is that they are a lot more reliable, especially if you are in a grapple situation.

For most Civilians, and even many Off Duty LEO's there is a good chance that if you have so shoot some body they will not only be on conversational distance, they will be either within touching distance or already "touching" you.

For that reason, the only deep pocket concealment guns I would carry Today, are the High Standard 22 Mag Derringer, or a S&W Bodyguard, or a Cenntennial. I would carry them as a No2, or a No3, with a bigger gun[s] as the primary[s].

It's either going to be a Seecamp .32 (much better gun, but I can't afford the .380) or a Ruger LCP .380 (not as nice a gun, but it is a.380).

Would you go with the better gun or the slightly larger caliber? Is the stopping ability difference between a .32 and a .380 worth worrying about?
I know you said it was down to two but I'm going to recommend another. I don't leave home without my Kel Tec P32. I put about 500 flawless rounds through it before I was totally confident in it's reliably. Not only is it reliable, it's a really nice to shoot gun. An inch and half of bicycle inter tube made it even nicer. As for letality, the 32 penetrates deep enough and carries all the energy it needs. Most of us 32 carriers load Fiocchi 73 grain FMJ. The 380 version uses the same grip, frame and slide so they are the same size. The 380 will jump a bit more. I'm confident that I can put two 32s on target while trying to get the 380 back on target after the first. DO NOT look at the Tomcat 32.

I will not carry anything less than a 442 38+P or a LCR in 357. If I carry only One (very rare) I would use a Belly Band or a Tuck-able or my rear pocket. I still carry Speed Strips with reloads.

I remember those COP pistols. I kind of liked the idea but never gave up and bought one.

Between the Seecamp and the .380,I'd take the Seecamp for myself. I don't think there would be much terminal difference, really. I have a Seecamp, but it's not a .32. One of the first .25's to come to town before the .32 came out.
