Default Permit renewal time...You gotta love it!

I applied for my CHP renewal on Nov 11th. I received my permit in the mail today. That's 20 days including the Thanksgiving holidays. I gave it the customary 90 days before my permit expires so I still have plenty of time. But that ain't bad. York County, VA knows how to do things the right way.

Re-apply?!?!

Here in PA , ya simply go to your county sheriffs office within 60 days of your current license expiring , take a number , wait your turn and in about 20min and $20 , you're good for another 5yrs.

Not bad!

Gotta say, here in AL, I just swing by the Sheriff's Office prior to annual expiration, pay my $10.00 ($7.50 and I spring another $2.50 for lamination) and I'm on my may, usually no more than 5 minutes car to counter and back.

Same here for a PA CC permit...

I mailed my permit Tuesday morning before work. Got a call late Wednesday afternoon my permit was ready for pickup. I picked it up Thursday morning walking out with it 10 min. later.

I was astonished by the speed. I had a permit years ago and thought it took at least two weeks.

For myself, I worry about this renewal issue. As you know in Wisconsin, liberal governor Jim Doyle vetoed CCW twice despite it cleared both houses.

My license says that it's good for five years. As of right now the liberals are trying everything to oust Walker. They even succeeded in a recall effort that failed, and now they are trying to tar him with election campaigning illegalities.

If we get another liberal governor, what would happen if he stated he would allow CCW licensing "until the licenses expired"? Without passing new legislation, would this strategy work?

20 days is really good here in VA. In the northern part of the state near DC it's going to take at least twice that long. They ain't very gun-friendly up there. If you don't get it within 45 days, by state law the maximum wait time, you get issued a temporary permit until yours comes in. It's a pain but a lot of the cities and counties make sure it takes the full 45 day limit before they will issue.

I don't really know how that could play out. I do know they would be throwing revenue away that the state needs, but as backwards as they think, this doesn't surprise me anymore.

I love Indiana, for a one time fee of $120, I never have to worry about permit renewal time.

Commonwealth of PA or VA?

In PA , ya get 5 years from the actual date that ya renew. If ya renew 20 days before yer old one expires , ya lose 20 days.

Now according to the law , you have 60 days from the date it expires to renew without having to reapply , kinda like a 'grace period' I suppose. I prefer not to test the waters.

Permit has start and end date which are adjusted for the new start date on renewal. You simply mark the application as a renewal not new as was the case for me.

Over here in Williamsburg, Va, I got mine renewed in about 2 weeks and was shocked! They also only charge $25 whereas most of the state is $50! For Va, they are practically handing them out haha.

Just sent my renewal in a two weeks ago, certified mail, my original doesn't expire until February, but I didn't want any lapse issues. Maine permits are good for 4 years, the initial one costs $35.00, and renewals cost $20. Took them about 6 or 7 weeks to get my first one to me, wondering how long it will take on the renewal.

justsumstuff, if you apply 90 days before expiration date on your original permit it renews for 5 years from that date. Does that make sense? I typed it and it doesn't to me. *s* My original expires 2/23/2013 and the renewal expires 2/23/2018. Hope that helps.

In Wyo., we have to reapply to the State and it usually takes around 4 months to get the new permit. Let's just say it isn't high on their priority list. I applied for a non-resident carry permit in Virginia a couple of years ago and was told at the time that it would take about 90 days. I had the permit in two weeks! Very impressive! Those Virginia folks know how to take care of business!

I wished we had lifetime federal permits. I had to renew mine this year in KY and it took about 30-40 days.

Yes, that makes sense & I should have been clearer in my question. fiasconva I understand your statement that the expiration dates are the same. I should have stated that I was talking about start dates and expiration dates, instead of just expiration dates.

I'm in Va. The statute states that the renewed permit starts or takes effect on the date that the original expires. So my question is: If the date the the renewal becomes valid is the same as the original expires, does this mean that you have to keep the original in your pocket until the renewed one goes into effect?

I hope that question is clearer.

North Carolina notifies you 120 days before expiration. You are required to fill out all the same paper work from the initial licensing and pay $90. If you let it lapse, the course has to be taken again and paper work also.

justsumstuff, my new issue date is the same date my old one expires, 2/25/2013. I'll keep my old one along with the new one until it expires, just in case. I don't know if the new one is valid until the issue date. I may not even start carrying my new permit until a week or so before my original expires. I need to get it laminated first. A lot of people had a problem with their old ones expiring before the new one was issued, especially in parts of VA that took 45 days or more. That's why I applied for renewal 90 days before. Did that help?

fiasconva: you answered exactly what I was trying to ask. You have to carry 2 for "overlap". At least it stays the same start stop dates, different years. Of course that only works if one remembers. . . Thanks!!

Little more detailed in N.C. first go to your local Sheriff's office fill out all the paper work, then pay the fees $70.00 if your not expired $80.00 otherwise. Then you leave after you do all this and wait another 40 to maybe as long as 70 days (depending on how backed up they are) then they call you and you go back to your Local Sheriff's office (not a satellite office) and pick up your renewal sign it and they then laminate it for oyu.

Where I live, go to the County Sheriff. Give them a money order for $52.50. It takes as long as a printer can make one.
Our local Sheriff wants everyone to get one. He said it makes there job a little easier. Crime in General has gone down.
I don't believe the Liberals will ever mention that on the evening news?

i live in orange county California. I have a CCW from northern California. It will expire in 3 months. The sheriff in the county I live in will not re-issue because she can not be sure of my good character. I've been licensed and carried all over the state for 25 years without incident. How much more proof does she need? Gotta love those liberals.

Do you have a link to an article about this? There have been rumors for years, but I have yet to hear about any legislation. No offense, but I tend to doubt it. The Dems are always talking about it, but there aren't too many Democrat districts around here. I'm darn glad I already have mine anyway.

Here in the Great State of Alabama, you go to the Sheriffs office and pay the fee, usually 20.00 and in about 10 minutes out you go.I keep a CCW permit and the federal CCW for active and retired LEO.

No, you don't. We REALLY don't need the Feds involved. The only Federal permit required should be the Constitution.

For Virginia, non resident permits are issued by the State Police. Resident permits are issued by the individual counties.

County seat sheriff office. Seems like it was $20 renewal instead of the $80 first time application fee. Same paperwork as when you first apply but no further background checking. Usually takes a week but sometimes longer.

Default Renewal Fees

After reading most of the posts and seeing what other states charge for the renewal process I figure most of you in other states are better off than we here in N.C. I just went through the renewal process last week and was charged $77.00 + $5.00 fee for the hospital to certify that I haven't been treated for any alchol or drug abuse. Yes, I am envious.

Here in Georgia my renewal took about two weeks. I had to go to the probate judge's office and fill out the form and get photographed, then to the SO for fingerprints. The SO runs a background check, then sends that info back to the Probate office. They send it out of state somewhere to get a DL looking color laminated photo license made. Two weeks is a pretty good turnaround, especially now when all the background checks for new purchases are flooding in. Before the laminated/picture licenses, it was running close to72 hours in our county for a new applicant, including bg check.

For those of you in states that do not get background checks at each renewal, are you allowed by the Feds to substitute your license for a background check when purchasing from a ffl?
