I went to my friend's house yesterday and he showed me his new guns including one he had just purchased for his wife. He purchased a 9mm Ruger LC9 for his wife with a lazer on it for Christmas. The salesman told him that it was a good one for a woman. She has never shot any handguns and he has no experience with them either.
He got it home and the next day I was there to see what he had purchased. He had gotten his wife the LC9 with lazer as I mentioned above. I had her hold it and attempt to rack the slide. She could not do it after several attempts. She also did not have the strength to lock the slide back. Guess he purchased himself another gun! I think she will likely end up with a revolver, when all is said and done. Goes to show that you can not and should not try to purchase a weapon for your wife or SO without their input. He said, I should have called you first.

I was in a gunshop a while back and a guy was celebrating his wife just getting her permit by buying her a pistol. I knew the guy he was formally the safety director of a paper mill I worked for, and this was wife number four or five, he went through them pretty quickly. Anyway when the guy running the place asked her about a gun, he piped up and said she could have whatever she wanted. She picked up a top of the line Kimber 1911 that cost more than my first car. She never handled it, racked the slide, nothing. She just saw the biggest price tag and went with it. I wonder how that first range session went. Heck knowing him they are probably divorced already.

Missus P&R Fan just got her permit. If she wants a NEW gun she can buy it herself. I have a perfectly good M642 I never carry. I told her it's hers. She liked that.:D
That's good, because I can never get her a good enough present.:(

I worked at a gun shop for a while part time. One day a young man walks in and says "I'm gonna buy my girl a 40"!:eek:

He picked out a Kahr P40 and she paid for it. They went directly out to the range. After loading it up, she shot ONE round. Set the gun on the bench, turned around and slapped her boyfriend as she walked out. :D

I caught her as she exited the range. Gave her a rental 22 pistol and a box of ammo on the house. After 20 minutes she came back and asked for more ammo!;)

Heh, my wife was the exact opposite story.

My brother and I took her to the range. She shot his 10/22. Was unimpressed. (I love it!) She shot his 22. revolver, warmed a little, but mostly unimpressed. Tried his wife's walther 9mm semi-automatic (don't remember the model) liked that a lot. Was TERRIFIED to shoot his big scary assault rifle (a Russian SKS). Sat down, timidly fired off a round, then another, and another until it was empty, then asked (first time for the day), "How do I put more bullets in it?"

When we went to the gun shop afterwards, she was ONLY interested in handguns, but didn't want any prissy .22. We went to a gun show later, she looked around and we asked a number of vendors for suggestions. The popular answer for a little 105lb 5'2" woman, a .38 with cowboy loads. We brought home .357 Magnum, (S&W 586) and she LOVES it.

Of course, now I am thinking maybe we should go out and either get ME a new one so I have something to shoot, or get one just for her (so I have something to shoot!) LOL

I am just thinking out loud but could't you place a lighter recoil spring in the gun to allow it to rack easier? I would assume the recoil spring in the gun takes into account someone using +P ammo.

I have seen something similar to that at the local range. Guy brought his soon to be ex to the range. They where the stall over from me. He had her put a few mags thought what looked like a 22 ruger. He goes over to his bag and pulls out revolver and a box of 357mag ammo. Loads it up hands it to her yea you know what comes next. She screamed loud enough that everyone stopped shooting to see what happened. I noticed she keep favoring her wrist and shooting her bf looks that could have melted a iceberg.

I don't know why some guys think its funny. He literally took a future shooter and turned them into a gun hater thinking he be funny.

Hi:
Working part time in a large Gun Shop my experence was that the husband /boyfriend/friend normally wanted the wife/girlfriend/friend what he wanted not what the lady liked.
In my self defense classes for females I had the ladies begin with a standard S&W Model 10 4" or a Model 36-1 3" useing light wadcutter ammo

You can and it might do the trick, but anytime you change spring weights you change the characteristics of how the gun handles under fire.

A lighter recoil spring will increase wear-and-tear, and might affect timing when shooting hotter defensive rounds, decreasing reliability.

Or it could work fine, but you end up having to experiment a good with the different types of rounds you might be using, and especially with defensive rounds if you're staking your life on the piece.

Most reputable gun manufacturers arrive at their chosen spring weights for after a lot of testing and for pretty good reasons.

Every time I get tempted to buy my wife a handgun this images comes to mind.

My daughter who is 5' 0" and barely 100 lbs. has a 686+. She was asking me about semi-auto's; I told her she would have a tough time racking the slide. She tried to rack the slide on my Kimber, Glock, M&P and couldn't - that was the end of her semi-auto discussion. In a pinch, when you REALLY need to be able to handle a gun, you want one that is reliable and that you're confident you can operate without a hitch.

My wife hates all guns and is especially fearful of semiautos. That said she does know how to handle a .38 from my days in LE and can readily defend herself if necessary.

Technique technique technique ...
My wife would have been hard pressed to cock the hammer on an N frame leave alone rack a slide till I put it in her head that its similar to drawing a bow string.
for that, she can make full use of a 1911 to include it in a 400 corbon chambering where I run a 20# recoil spring.
teach em how

Why do threads that involve women, mention their size, height, or weight? Shooting isn't a feat of stength, or stature. My wife shoots handguns like it's her job, and she hates guns. Women shoot the bigger calibers as good as the guys.

Many years ago when my wife expressed an interest in learning to shoot, she wasn't sure what she wanted. At the time I had maybe 8 or 10 handguns. So I laid them all out and let her look and handle.
Picked up a semi-auto, looked it over and set it back down. Right then she decided she wanted a revolver. She looked over the wheelguns, picked three and we went to the range.
2" Model 36: she liked this one until she shot it. Yoo much recoil, didn't want anything more to do with it.
4" Model 10: she liked this one and shot it pretty well. But it was a little big for her.
Colt Detective Special: She shot it, reloaded, shot it again and proptly claimed it for her own. Took me about 20 years to get it back.

Always, ALWAYS, let the wife pick her own gun. ;)

Grayfox, you goofed. Now that she claimed your colt detective special would have been a good excuse to run out and get another one for yourself. His & Hers. Frank

My sister wants me to recommend a concealed carry gun for her. I've been trying to decide between a compact 9mm and a snubby. She's one of those "starve herself skinny," girls with stick arms and boney hands. You're post helped me decide, I'm gonna recommend a snubby, and a sandwich.

Reminds me of when my 5 ft. wife was buying her 3913 and the clerk say, "You know that's a 9mm don't you?"

She points and me and says,"I shoot his 45 better than he does. What's your point?" End of discussion.

I believe for a first handgun women should look at the .380 such as a Bersa Thunder, Walther PPK or maybe a Sig, another good gun to start with is a .32 H&R Mag revolver which will also shoot .32 ammo.

These choices give them something without a lot of recoil which should allow them to shoot well. A year down the road if the want a .38 or 9mm then look at them.

Grayfox, that's exactly the way to do it! I get tired of going into the shops and immediately having the tiny pink gun pointed out to me. Growing up my dad made sure I tried everything from .22 to 9mm to .45, etc. It's not difficult to learn how to rack a slide, a woman doesn't have to be a weightlifter to accomplish this. It does take some patient instruction and a bit of practice. I wish women had more opportunity to see a line up of guns and be able to try them out before making a decision.
