Default Sigma 40 VE

I'm currently in the application process for a position as a reserve officer in a small town. Reserve officers are expected to provide their own weapon, but it has to be a .40. I don't own a .40, but one of my father's co workers is trying to get rid of a S&W Sigma 40 VE for $350 (afew accessories included). The broke college kid in me is thinking this would be a good weapon until I can afford something nicer. The boy scout in me is asking if I want to trust my life to a bargain pistol. What I'm asking here is for opinions if this weapon would make an adequate service weapon for a part-time cop in a small town.

The S&W SD40VE is a fairly decent pistol. I have not heard of any problems with reliability or quality. New ones are around $315. I would go that route instead of the Sigma.

Heavy, gritty trigger with long trigger travel, but it generally goes bang when it is supposed to. Not much custom duty gear (holsters) designed for the Sigma. Non-standard rail size means most rail accessories won't fit without an adapter.

My father in law carried a sigma 40 as his duty gun years ago. he had tow of them. he still has one, gave the one to his youngest son. i bought new one new 3 years ago. it came to 321 and some change after taxes and the background check, so depending on what the accessories are, the price may be high.
