I'm a retired LEO w/LEOSA certification and am going to Atlantic City, NJ (overnight) with a bunch of buddies later this month. I always carried up there before retirement (this is a regular trip) and wondered if there would be a problem. I'm aware of the silly "no hollowpoint" law but I'm not comfortable traveling unarmed.

Thanks in advance.

I would go armed and skip the casino. I'm active LEO and go armed to NJ whenever I have to (though I really intensely dislike everything about NJ) but I still wouldn't want to try to get into the casinos while carrying a gun. As I see it, a casino is the last place I'd want to be and I wouldn't want to push my luck. I know some PA officers who have actually been threatened with arrest for crossing the river while carrying a gun IN UNIFORM.

I'd patronize the casinos in CT before giving a cent to any business in NJ. That said, NJ casinos are privately owned any may have different rules as per each property. Since it's NJ though, expect a very anti-gun attitude and resulting hassles.

The HP ammo issue was addressed last year with the revision to LEOSA. Before the revision ammo type was not addressed. With the last revision of LEOSA the only ammo that is prohibited is only ammo prohibited by federal law or that ammo subject to the National Firearms Act. HP ammo is neither therefore it is now legal to carry HP ammo under LEOSA. States cannot restrict that.
As far as carrying in a casino. That is up to each casino. One casino could prohibit it and another one right next door could allow it. They're private property and can regulate CCW as they wish. That's been part of LEOSA since it was passed. The state cannot prohibit carrying under LEOSA unless the state owns the casino. That's been part of LEOSA since it was written and passed 8.5 years ago.

NJ is not only a bad state, its very risky state for gun owners at all times. Cops will Be Cops but be aware mostly all Casino security is retired Cops with NJSP getting most of the Creme. If I were in your position (and I never would be as I do most of my spending outside NJ), I would leave it locked in the car. signed: cant wait to move outa NJ its a horrible state !!!

Old Cop,

Why not go right to the source?

The NJSP has a Retired Police Officer section within the New Jersey State Police Firearms Investigation Unit:

609-882-2000(main telephone number) extension 6612, 2063 or 2064
