Hi all,

I really love my SP and would like to carry it more, as I am very comfortable shooting it. However, I am struggling to find an effective, and reasonably priced, cc holster. My preferred method is IWB. As I see a lot of people who say they carry theirs regularly, I am hopeful someone can give me a recommendation.

I will say a huge concern for me is retention. I did buy an IWB (Galco if I recall), and the pistol fell out once one I was exiting my vehicle. It is the only time that has ever happened and I lost all confidence in the holster right then.

TIA

I use a Galco Concealable Belt holster. It's OWB but I find it conceals my 2" SP 101 very well and it's comfortable. Doesn't take much to hide it as I wear my shirt tails out mostly in summer.

I am not opposed to OWB, but does it hold it closely to the body? How is the retention?

Alan Bogdan from Remora sent me one of his new clipped tuckable IWBs gratis for a try-out (I've been a good customer), along with one of his OWB holsters (I intend to try it between the belt and the trousers) that allows you to set the cant you like with velcro. Here are some pix of the tuckable with the 3"
SP-101 - $30 retail IIRC.

If you know me, the clip is a giveaway. If you don't notice the clip, I don't know that you'd notice that I have a 3" .357 Magnum under that shirt. I'll post more after I've worn it a bit, but my initial thought was that I couldn't believe how well it worked - especially at the price point.

Yes it holds close to the body and retention is excellent. I go about 290 at present and it serves me well. The only draw back is the price. This is a top drawer holster and retails around $95.

Thanks for the tip! I just found one on Amazon Prime in "like new" condition for $21 with free shipping. I'm hoping it will work as well for my SP-101 as it has for yours.

For an SP101, I have used the following holsters:
AKJ Concealco IWB
Crossbreed Qwikclip IWB
Remora IWB

and now I have my favorite all time holster model on order:
TT Gunleather "Mike's Special" IWB
The Mike's Special has extra cant angle and sits nice and low, making for an excellent carry holster.

Any holster made specifically for a particular model of gun should NEVER have the weapon fall out! Beware holsters that claim to fit several models....(with the exception of Remora)

The Crossbreed Supertuck is a very nice holster to look into. I own one for a J frame but they do offer it for the SP101. Crossbreed also gives discounts for NRA members and Military/LEO at checkout.

I do have one for my XD that I really like, but I was hoping to find something decent for under $50 (bit of a cash crunch at the moment).

The best holster, and it trumps the crossbreed IMO and in fact (lol) is from SHTF! shtfgear.com. It lets you get a full grip on the gun before draw, sits better, better leather, sewed on with kevlar thread so you don't have to worry about studs rubbin you raw (which was my problem) and they have hundreds on combos! It is what I carry my XDsc 9mm and my SP101 3" in. I also have a Brigade Gun leather holster (that I waited 2 years to get) that doesn't even come close to how much I love my SHTF.

That's interesting. I have a Crossbreed for the same XD and have been happy with it. On a day to day carry basis, what is the advantage(s) of the SHTF, since they are similarly priced?

Thanks. I love my SP and would really like to get it back into my daily carry rotation.

First off, you are able to get a full grip around your gun before draw. I have never been able to do that in my Supertuck, I sold mine a while ago on ebay in fact. The Kydex is sewn on instead of just riveted, which feels more durable to me also my paint started to chip on the rivets. I have yet to get sweaty wearing the SHTF holster and often did with my supertuck. You can email them on how they treat their leather it is very interesting. It has a lifetime warranty, something I was never clear about with Crossbread. If anything happens at all though you can just send it back! They will give you free clips for life if anything goes wrong, and the leather is laser cut which left finer edges I felt. If I remember correctly my supertuck only had a couple positions up or down that my clips could move, and the SHTF feels like I can get greater sense of motion for some reason. I get a better tuck and a deeper concealment, so it is more comfortable too. But the biggest part for me, and this might sound kind of like a co-pout was the cross, I am religious, but I like to celebrate the rising of the Lord and not really glorify his death; crosses always have rubbed me the wrong way. Now, I am not saying Crossbreads are bad or don't buy a Crossbread, everybody is different and I feel that SHTF is better. Also they are a little bit newer of a company so I like to give them all the help they can get :D

Contact them about the 3 inch SP model though, they made one for me same price that is awesome!

My Ruger SP101 is my first concealed carry gun, and I bought a City Slicker 2 from R. Grizzle Leather. So far I have been happy with it.

I have a Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake holster for my 3" SP101. I ordered the holster with a 4th belt slot and removable IWB straps. These holsters are well made out of heavy leather. The retention is almost too tight when carried IWB, or under the belt. With the slots, I can carry it high or low, FBI cant, or cross draw. They have a new holster called the Cumberland. I like the looks of this holster, and once again, it can be carried IWB with the optional straps. Under the belt, or over the belt with the clips. I am thinking about ordering one for my 3" K frame. This gun started life as a 6", but was cut down to the 3" barrel length. I call it an & Wesson.

Good explanation. Thanks.

Years ago I read that over time, those that carry concealed will eventually have a drawer full of holsters, I am living proof. Obviously there are different considerations for each carry position. I prefer appendix IWB for overall ease of access and to minimize printing. I find revolvers to be the most comfortable and autos allow the fastest draw. I've carried both 2" and 3" SPs and currently carry a 3" 686p and have used everything from $10 Uncle Mikes to $100+ custom leather. My favorite by far is the $40 N82 Tactical Original and have one for each of my carry guns. They are about as thin as you can get, quick and easy to insert and remove and the most comfortable. In addition, they have supurb customer service, ship almost the same day and take custom orders. For example I had the clip moved toward the trigger to further reduce thickness.

Milt Sparks make really comfortable in the pants holsters. They
are a bit pricey, but you get a great value. Take a look at the
"summer special".

I might also check out the DeSantis ankle holsters with nylon constuction.
These are quite comfortable and do not "print" with the correct pants.
I have found that you must dress for proper carry.
