I think they call them .44 Specials.

I agree with WPWarhawk, the Buffalo Bore low recoil works great but it is expensive, I carry it in my NG329 while deer and hog hunting.

I have a 3" Model 629 Deluxe. I would not even think of shooting .44 magnum ammo in that. 240-grain .44 Special is plenty for me.

I agree with other about the .44spl. You get a slightly faster and heavier bullet in a .44sp than a .45acp. I love shooting the mags, but they are prone to pass-through a human target and hit something/someone else.
just saying...

I couldn't agree more, that is why my 696 gets used most of the time.
The way I see it, there is a place for the .44 mag but certianly not as a CCW. A 4" 29 or 629 can be used with hot "specials", but is not an ideal choice. I use my S&W nickel .44 magnum in the woods, and that is were it shines.(pun intended ) I had a black bear interupt lunch with my wife, and having a Colt Andaconda on my hip put a smile on my face.

For my 4" 29-2, I like the 200gr. Speer Gold Dot Specials. It's VERY pleasant to shoot.
The target in my avatar was shot with that load, one handed at 50'.

If you look hard, you might be able to find some of the .44M medium loads produced back in the 80s by WW, RP, and CCI Blazer. These put out a 240gr lead bullet at about 950fps. WW and CCI have SWC bullets, the RP is a flat point.

I keep meaning to load some .44 Specials for my 3" 629, but so far the only thing if fired is full-blown .44 Magnums. The recoil is something of a shock to your system, but you can learn to deal with it and maintain control. It's not a light gun, weighing about 48 oz loaded (240 gr), which helps in the recoil department.
It is not amenable to shooting a double-tap. But with that kind of power, a double tap is more of a goal than a ncecessity. Mainly, I carry it when hiking in bear country, expecially during berry season. It's fairly easy to conceal, and the cylinder rides on top of your hip, which helps keep your pants from sagging.

Don't be so sure.
When people (or animals not being hunted for food) do things which require you to shoot them, that generally involves a lot of random, unpredictable movement.
Different people react differently to being shot. Different people, high on drugs, DEFINITELY react differently to being shot.
- Don't count on hitting effectively the first time.
- Don't count on a one shot stop, with ANY handgun.
