We have had some interesting things happen in the recent KS legislative session. The state will have complete control of all gun laws, (cities may prohibit carry in city buildings.) Open carry will be allowed statewide. Those persons who paid close to $ 400 for a concealed carry permit, with background check, 8 hour safety class with range may be miffed when anyone can strap on a gun and open carry it. Carrying a large knife in a scabbard on one's belt will now be allowed. Automatic knives were made legal last year. As the president of the KS State Rifle Assn, Patricia Stoneking, told me, they are working toward full constitutional carry.

Yeah. Same here in Cheeseland. In fact you will get hassled in the big cities
for open carry even though it's totally legal (and was before we got concealed).

Congratulations to you and all people from Kansas.
I hope we hear that you can carry concealed without a permit pretty soon.
Good news for all of you.

Out of sight out of mind. We have open carry and rarely do I see anyone carrying openly. It is good though if carrying concealed and the wind opens your jacket or you shirt rides up and exposes your firearm. Worked great for me two times I forgot my wallet at home, just pulled the shirt and exposed my firearm, it didn't even raise a eyebrow around here. Why give the anti's anything to whine about or get the soccer mom going into a rant even if it is legal.

Back to original post glad to see laws changing for the good.

This news is good!

Since I moved to Kansas last year, I've been glad that the gun laws hear are so much better than in Illinois where I came from.

Glad to see they are getting even better! I really like KS so far!

Va has open carry also. I do open carry once in a while. I'm not much a fan of causing concern. I see it like this: people on the world don't know me personally and have no idea of my demeanor. Carrying a firearm openly is best done with a smile and happy disposition. You're making a statement about gun ownership when you open carry. Make it a good one.

The only good thing about open carry is if you are concealed carrying and accidentally do somehow expose your firearm, but concealed carry is all I do except when I go to the range or out in my fenced in back yard!

I doubt that you will see many people carrying openly. It's been the law in Michigan for years and I seldom see it. Most simply choose to carry concealed.

I've NEVER seen anyone open carry in Michigan, even though it's legal.

Will you still have to pay the same $400 for background check and class to get your permit to carry concealed? If so I would not be miffed. I prefer concealed carry to open carry and even if they passed open carry here in Texas I personally would not open carry.

well i'll be...I am new here, new to concealed carry in general as well. I guess I always assumed you could OC in texas. I don't live there, just assumed it. Anyways, I have never seen an open carry in VA.

Not to nit-pick :) but it doesn't cost $400 to get a conceal carry permit in Kansas. $200-$250 depending on how much your class is.

If you know what the open carry laws were in the state of Kansas before this legislation you'd understand how welcoming this is. It was such a patchwork of laws with cities and counties all able to regulate open carry however they wanted.

Also if I'm not mistaken, a person can now carry a loaded handgun in their vehicle whereas before you could not, unless you were a CC permit holder.

The only time I open carry here in Ohio is at the range and maybe when hiking. I usually carry concealed around the house and yard. In the yard so I don't freek out my neighbors. I find carrying concealed all the time, even at home just good practice.

Why be miffed? It's not the same. And my Kansas CHL is accepted in all but 12 states, and except for hiking or camping I never OC. No sense in scaring the sheep.......
BTW, it cost me $220 total for my CHL.

I apologize about the cost of a concealed carry permit. I do not have one, so I was guessing. I have a LEOSA permit, and I am required to carry concealed. I also found out that the law permitting LEOSA carrying retired officers to carry where active officers carry did not make it through the senate before the close of the legislative session. We can hope it passes next session, sorry for the misinformation.

Concealed in Ks

Thanks for the info. I occasionally work in Kansas and have my Oklahoma CCW. We passed the open carry option here just to cover the inadvertent exposure issue.

Good to hear the State of Kansas is now free from post civil war reconstruction.

(That CC fee ain't about carrying a firearm, it's a privilege tax.)

I am glad that Congress had passed HR 218 in 2004 and the "improvements" in 2010,2013. It is frustrating that the law is misinterpreted so often in many jurisdictions. I guess I never really thought there was a need for a "law" to let a LEO cross state line in or out of uniform, How could someone believe/suggest a sworn officer is no longer a LEO when he crosses a line on a map!??? Be Safe,
