Is anyone out there who was able to get a Class A Unrestricted LTC in Quincy, MA? I am new here and I would be thankful if anyone with more experience with the process of applying for an LTC A chimed in and gave me a heads up for what to expect.

I know that I have to take the safety course and fill out the application/turn in all the requisite paperwork. However, I am unfamiliar with what actually happens throughout this process, how difficult it will be in this city, etc.

I have looked on the internet about obtaining a Class A LTC in MA, but I do not get anything specific about Quincy MA. I did find the state's website about applying for the LTC A however (so that's out of the way). Anyway, thank you again for those of you with experience willing to respond.

Quincy is considered a "green" city, meaning they do issue unrestricted LTC's. That being said there is a good chance they will restrict it to target and hunting if you're under 25. Since you are new, I recommend taking a course that includes actual shooting. On the interview dress nicely and act polite.

I'd stop by a local gun shop and see if they have any tips. First step is going to the police station and/or website and see what they say. Every town is different.

Hello tjltc,
Welcome to the forum.
My suggestion is to contact the Licensing Officer at the Quincy Police station. If it is not too distant for you, contact Four Seasons in Woburn. They have an excellent training program for LTCs. Also, look online at GOAL. This is the Gun Owners Action League for Mass. They have more info there than Congress! You will find every answer you can think of questions for. They list all the requirements, training classes, etc. This would be the first thing to do. MA requires you to successfully complete the Firearms Training session before you are allowed to submit an application for an LTC. Classes usually cost around $100.00. As previously suggested, find one where they actually take you shooting. This makes a critical difference. It would be like getting your driver's licence, buying a car, then never driving it. What good would there be in having the licence without the proper training? Guns are lethal weapons that require the utmost respect. Invest in your training wisely.
After the course is completed & approved by the State Police; you can submit the application with the required fee - another -$100.00! With the application, you will submit a brief letter stating why you feel the need to have such a license. Determine this reasoning very carefully! It will be a dealbreaker!
Then you wait for your interview with the Quincy Police Licencing Officer. The interview, background checks & other criteria combined, will determine whether you will receive an LTC. If you pass, the Licencing Officer will fingerprint you right there & submit your application. There is somewhere around a 6-8 week waiting period. If you pass that, they will mail your LTC to the Quincy Police licensing Officer, who will then issue it to you.

Hope this is helpful. Please think responsibly throughout this process. You want it to go very smoothly. MA is a strict state!
PM me if you need any other help.

Quincy does issue unrestricted LTCs to residents who are >25 yo. If younger, regrettably they almost always issue restricted (no CCW) LTCs only.

Lots of information on licensing, restrictions, etc. can be found in the MA gun laws sub-forum on www.northeastshooters.com

Cost of classes with shooting usually are in the $150 range, without shooting (or the puppy mill schools where you only shoot 5 or 10 rds of .22) may be $100. Cost of range rental and ammo drive a higher cost for the class.

Not every town requires letters to the chief or letters of recommendation.

Four Seasons is a great gun shop, but does not do training. Many instructors are listed on their site and one is in the same building but FS does not run any training.

There are also lots of instructors much closer to Quincy, a few are really good, some are so-so and some may not be very good at all . . . this is assuming that you want to learn something in the class and not merely punch a ticket to get a LTC.

Thanks very much for all the replies. Yes I plan to invest in the training course and try to learn as much as I can. I plan to take additional training even after I (hopefully) get my LTC. Lots of good information you folks have given me, and I will follow up with GOAL and all the links. Right now I am looking for a shooting course close to me that I can attend. Will definitely contact QPD and take down all the things they require. My best regards to all of you, it's great to be here on the forums!
