Default If barrel rifling...

If barrel rifling is weak on my 2" .38 snub... is it even important for it's effective range anyway...also considering I'm only a fair-shot.

Shoot a hole in cardboard out to the max range you can hit it.
Is the hole round? If yes, the bullet is stabilized. If the bullet hits sideways, that's a problem.

OKFC05 is correct, it's pretty easy to test for key holing.

Up to 5 or 7 yards, it isn't going to matter, even if it does key hole. If you need range beyond that, then something has to change.

How many rounds does it take to wear out the rifling on a 38?

Check out a few other ones -- or a few thousand. They all "look weak", especially later ones with the new-style rifling, but that's how they're supposed to look.

I have a model 14 8" shot only with lead bullets in bullseye for 40 years, and the bore looks and measures like new.
Improper cleaning wears more .38 barrels than shooting does, especially when shot with lead or plated bullets.

I played with a bulldog rev. chambered in .38S&W and the barrel was wore plumb out. At 3 yds. it threw the bullet sideways through a 2 in. chunk of beef and 1/4 in. of plywood and kept going. Larry

No it isn't important because the vast majority of SD
shootings by civilians will be at very close range, measured
in feet rather than yards. Many times the distance will be
at arm's length or even less.

I doubt if I can hit a cow at 10 yds. with a good pistol. I just posted that to show at close range a pistol doesn't need rifling to do a lot of damage. Larry

10-4. I commented because we don't know what effective range the OP needs.
