Another dispatch from the front
26-year-old man killed in Chicago drive-by shooting - Video | WFLD
I've met enough medical personnel who have adopted CC since it was authorized to believe that they constitute a larger than average of CCL holders.
We also had a woman carjacked on Lake Shore Drive by two men bleeding from gunshot wounds.
So far this week: 63 shot, 56 wounded, 8 total homicides, but the weekend is young.

So much for extra-tough gun laws.

Not really. Gunshot KIAs in Chicago greatly exceeded same
in Iraq & Afghanistan (combined) for years.

There were 664 homicides in Chicago in 2017 and, for comparison, 37 casualties in the U.S. military in its myriad operations around the globe. That's according to data from the Chicago Tribune and from the Department of Defense's press office... From the data available, it shows that Chicago suffered 17.9 times more homicides than the U.S. military worldwide -- combat and non-combat related deaths -- last year...
For Chicago, 664 homicides -- murders by shooting or other means (not including suicides) -- averages to 1.8 homicides every day of the year.

For your comparison to be accurate, you need to compare US Military deaths in Afghanistan to police officer deaths in Chicago. After all, they're there for essentially the same purpose. Or you need to compare civilian deaths in Afghanistan to civilian deaths in Chicago . . .

I'm not making a comparison, I'm showing the death counts.
They're all Americans. Way too many Americans are killed in
Chicago.

I live in a small rural county and the sheriff deputy said he felt safer in the military in Afghanistan and Iraq than he does doing his job in this little country setting county. He was wearing a vest under his shirt.
Some day people will wake up to the fact that gun laws don't make criminals obey the laws. Yeah those gun free zone signs and laws seem to get people killed/shot rather than protected from criminals with guns.
If I can abstain from using a gun free business I will. I feel much more safe when I can carry a gun on me. I just don't understand a business not understanding posting his business gun free is the same as saying come rob me because you are likely to get my money rather than get shot.
I know neighborhood gangs are not the only criminal aspect of Chicago. It is very high in organized crime. Those in organized crime don't want the average citizen having guns. I guess they don't like the thought of citizens shooting back.

I find it hard to have pity or to care about deaths in Chicago. They all choose to live there. There isn't one person in Chicago who is being held there against their will. They are living their chosen lifestyle, good for them.
While most of us sit here and express how scary and dangerous their situation is, keep in mind many of the people who live there are in their comfort zone, it's what they know and it's what they are comfortable with. Take them out of the scary urban environment and drop them on the Appalachian Trail on in a state forest and they would immediately go into a panic (I'm not exaggerating, I've seen it).
Let them lead the life they choose and be happy for them.
Now I know someone is going to pop in and say "these people can't afford to leave Chicago". Guess what, most don't have jobs holding them there and the rent is higher in Chicago than in many rural areas. They could live cheaper and have more job opportunities outside of the city, they just choose not to.

The only difference here is that this shooting happened in Chicago instead of some other American town.
It happens multiple times every day in this country.
Nothing else to see here.

That wasn't my quote.
Some apparently feel "non-uniformed" American casualties
are not worth consideration; some feel "they bring it on them
selves because they're free to leave Chicago, but haven't
done so."
We've got a lot of bad stuff going on, besides Chicago. The
deaths from opioid overdose is another troubling trend.

I WON'T GET INTO POLITICS, SO AS TO KEEP WITHIN THE FORUM RULES. IF I DID, I WOULD HAVE MUCH TO SAY.....
ANNUAL FBI STATS SHOW REPEATEDLY, THAT THE JURISDICTIONS--LIKE CHICAGO--WITH THE MOST STRINGENT GUN LAWS, HAVE THE HIGHEST RATES OF HOMICIDE, AND OTHER VIOLENT CRIMES........

We keep hearing this, but it's simply not true. There may be a correlation, but it's not nearly as simple as you state.
For example, here are the violent crime rates per 100,000 people as reported by the FBI in 2016 (the newest data I could find quickly) for Illinois and Alaska:
Alaska 804.2
Illinois 436.3
If you want to look at it by city:
Anchorage 1,114.9
Chicago 443.0
Alaska is arguably the least restrictive when it comes to gun laws and Chicago is the most. Yet, when we look at the actual numbers, Alaska is far more dangerous and violent. So, no, just having restrictive gun laws doesn't mean a higher violent crime rate.
What's more important to us as gun owners is, are gun laws reducing crime? The answer to that is no.
When you look at the change from 2015 to 2016, we find:
Alaska 10.0% increase
Illinois 12.6% increase
So here we can see that gun laws are doing nothing to reduce crime when these two states are compared.

I live uncomfortably close to Chicago and don't mind saying that with a few exceptions most of them had it coming.
