How many reload magazines do you carry?
Greetings!
In light of the current state of civil stability, for those of you that carry a semi-auto, how many magazines do you typically carry?
Thanks for participating in this survey. While I live in a state that mandates neutered magazines (10 rounds max), I am looking to get a feel for what my fellow forum members feel comfortable with.
Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Typically two. If I have reason to believe that there is a better than almost zero chance that I may actually need the thing, I grab a couple of extras, and a second handgun, and a long gun. That has happened twice in 50 years. Neither had anything bad happen. For ordinary purposes one handgun and two reloads is my comfort zone.

Two moonclips... 9mm J-frame (five rounds each). I have a third in a pocket carrier (same as the other two) if I’m going somewhere where I’d want an extra, and a spare in the truck.
If that can’t get it done, I have an AR pistol with 140 rounds between what’s in it and my vest, inside my truck. If it is that bad, the J-frame should get me back to the truck.

Typically I carry the gun and 1 extra mag....occasionally 2.
I get the "If I cant solve the problem with whats in the gun" mentality...but people seem to forget magazines fail at a much higher rate than guns....
If your mag fails it doesnt really matter if you are using a Glock and 33 round mag.....It will be useless without a reload.
Plus an extra mag doesnt weigh hardly anything.....Definitely prudent to have at least one reload.

One. Mainly not for the extra ammo, but in case the mag in the gun craps out or is lost somehow. If war breaks out, I'll consider carrying more...

Well, depends on which area I'm going to. As a rule, one magazine in the pistol, two more on my person....48 rounds to get me out of trouble.

When I was on patrol duty I generally carried two full reloads. I have been at re-qualifications and seen a reload fail, (broken magazine or speedloader) most of the shooters just dropped the defective part. They then pulled their second reload and continued.

I EDC a Beretta PX4 Compact plus 1 spare mag. As some have said, the main reason is in the unlikely event of a malfunction. I'll add that it also helps balance out the weight on my hips.
I also typically have a BUG, a 642, and one reload in the form of a speed strip in my pocket.
Regardless of capacity, I'd carry at least one reload.
I find it easy to carry this way. YMMV.

I carry a Ruger EC9s 9mm. If I'm going to town, I carry one extra magazine. If I'm out on my property, I carry a mag full of HPs and one full of shot shells, in case I run into Mr No-Shoulders. Amazingly, the little Ruger feeds these shot shells just fine.

No matter what carry weapon I've always carried 2 extra magazines, just a habit for over 40 yrs. In the backpack that always accompanies me in the vehicle are 4 additional mags.
If I'm going on a trip out of the area, I usually have my CZ Scorpion Micro pistol with folding brace with me and a full complement of 6-35rd mags or my 5.56mm AR 10.5 in braced pistol with 6-30rd mags. Either of the two above are in discreet carry bags (first aid cases) on the floor directly behind my drivers seat.

Lately I’ve been ccw’ing my Glock 32. Have 1 full mag (13) and one in the pipe. I’ve never felt the need to carry a spare mag.

Not being an on duty officer would be an important variable.
I carry a Series 70 with 8. Sometimes a spare mag.

Generally, if I think there is some reason to do so, I carry one extra magazine but more often than not no spare magazine. Sometimes I just carry a back up gun in my car.

I primarily carry revolvers with one extra reload. But on the rare occasion I carry a semi-auto it is in a shoulder holster with a double magazine carrier which helps balance out the load and it's not too shabby having 52 rounds ready to go.

Muss, that's true, it's one of Clint Smith's maxims but, as a rule, most folks don't carry long guns in their vehicles. Some folks do, I get that, I used to carry a rifle in the trunk of my car routinely. I don't anymore, maybe I should. But fighting my way to my long guns is a home defense concept to me, not a driving concept - if I have to pull a gun I probably do NOT want to get out of my vehicle.

Don't get out much these days, not even to the range, thanks to the recent shortage. So, one spare mag's been enough up to this point.

I normally carry a Colt Commander. I find that with single stack mags a double mag pouch is just as comfortable to wear as a single. So I always carry two.

I didn’t vote because how many spare mags I carry vary. When I’m around my property I tend to go sans an extra mag or speed loader. If I’m heading into the nearest local burg (pop. aprox. 8000) I always have one with me, and if I’m heading into “the big city” (as little as possible) I will always take two.

I don't carry a spare. I have confidence in the mag in My gun. In 1976 when I was at Gunsite the first time I asked Mr Cooper why He didn't carry a spare. His reply was " If I need more than 8 rounds to solve the problem, there is a good possibility that I won't survive the conflict."

Just the one in my P365 that I know will fire every single time, on my body. I have another in my center console for that warm fuzzy feeling.

As much as I admire Mr. Cooper I ran out of ammo in the middle of a gunfight in 1974 (only had one reload of six). After that I carried a box of 50, plus my duty speedloaders, w/my service revolver. When we transitioned to the Glock I purchased extra mags to include the 33 rounder. In retirement I still carry extra ammo in my car’s center console.

I voted "two magazines", but the answer for me is "it depends on the gun".
For my Colt 1911 (.45), I carry two extra for a total of 23 rounds.
For my S&W 469, I carry one extra for a total of 25 rounds.
For my S&W Sigma, I carry one extra for a total of 31 rounds.
For my AR Pistol, which I carry in the vehicle when on road trips, it's one 20-rounder in the gun plus four additional in the case.
Except for the AR, it's not that I think I need that much ammo. It's for the malfunction issue. The magazine is the weakest link in the chain for semi-autos.

With a 10rd limit, I carry 1 spare. I may toss another into the truck just in case. I do live in a pretty violent state, though my zone is relatively stable.

I'm a 1911 guy when it comes to social carry. I've always got one spare magazine on my belt. If I'm working a security detail, I run at least two more. My truck has a grab bag with a trauma kit and a few more mags. I'd hate to be the guy that ran out of ammo......

I generally don’t carry a spare mag(s) or speed loader unless I am wearing a shoulder rig, they act as counterweights. There are some that carry more EDC gear than I did while working the street. Whatever floats your boat.

None!
' If you didn’t hit your intended target/targets with the first 5-10 bullets, what makes you think you’re going to hit with the second bunch? Where did your first bunch go?
Second rule of gun fighting 2) hit what you shoot at.

Second rule of gun fighting 2) hit what you shoot at.
I try to practice regularly

What if you hit, but your hits haven't any discernable effect on the bad guy?
What if there are five of them?
What if you need suppression fire?
What if you have a malfunction?
What if you have to move and shoot?
More > less.
I carry 18 in the gun, 17 in the spare.

At that point, I'm gonna hope that the assailant(s) get attacked from behind by zombies attracted to the noise of the gunfight. What if you have a malfunction and drop your spare magazine while moving and shooting at five assailants who have stationed a sixth at your only avenue of escape . . . ?

Glad you made it

I’m glad you’re here to tell the tale

I’m reminded of the off duty cop at the Trolley Square shooting in Utah a dozen years ago. He emptied his Kimber 1911 and was out of the fight in seconds. Apparently did not hit the guy, but that firing stopped the killing because the perp ran and hid. Still, I bet he wished he had a spare so he could have done more.
No one ever complained after a gunfight of having too much ammo. The opposite is not true. When convenience trumps competence, failure is more likely.
ETA: Muss’s post below corrects mine concerning the story. Great linked article.

That's not what happened. He fired two rounds at the guy, and continued to pursue him, drawing fire until on duty officers killed the guy . . .
