So when you travel how much ammo do you bring with you? (assuming you are not headed to a shooting match or something)

I usually fly, so ammunition must be in original or similar packaging.

So I always bring a full box.

Two reloads on me, a full box in the luggage. Just incase of zombies.

When driving, I carry a couple of speed loaders with me. Unusually a full box in the back of the SUV, that is in case when I get where I am going we may do some shooting. When flying to visit friend, I borrow a carry gun from them.

I carry the VP9 when travelling. 17+1 rounds in the pistol and one extra 17-round mag.

If a revolver one extra speed strip, If a semi-auto the 15 in the gun is enough.

Not planning to get into a firefight with a heavily armed mob of mutants, but only want to save my butt in an emergency so that should be all I need.

Er….driving to northern Illinois to visit family, I typically tighten my tinfoil hat and bring a few extra guns, plural. And extra ammo (but not as much to drag down gas mileage a lot).

But I usually go shooting while on the visit. Nice to have options while at the range.

Seriously, when traveling by vehicle alone, typically 2-3 handguns and 50 rounds for each. Kind of hard to discreetly bring a long gun into a hotel room.

And don’t forget your go-bag: flashlight, water, food, hiking boots, and seasonal clothing. Never know when you may have to walk home.

My wife and I are full-time rv'ers. I travel with several j frames and a k frame revolver. All of them are, of course, chambered in either .38 special or .357 mag. I haven't counted lately, but I'm pretty sure that I've got around 100 for each caliber. However, I only get back home about once a year to restock, so my situation is different. Fortunately, I have never needed to restock and hope that I never have too.

Last trip I had my Bodyguard .380 with one spare mag. I was ready for anything.

Traveling carry is the same as EDC. Hubby and I both carry a CZ PCR with spare mag, so 58 rounds between us.
Edit: hasn't occurred yet but if we traveled to wilderness, we would add a 686Plus and two reloads for each of us. Same as woods walks here, so 42 more rounds of 180gr. .357 between us.

When I carry my 637 in the car, I keep a caseguard 18 with 6 shot cartridges and 12rds of Gold dot short barrel. Plus 1 speedloader and 5 in the gun. If I carry my Colt Defender .45, 3 full mags and a box of 50 in the trunk.

I almost always have something very similar, except I usually have an old Model 36 along instead of a 442. 15-20 rounds seems like plenty. If I happen to take an auto pistol for some particular reason, I usually bring one extra magazine, which typically amounts to 15-30 cartridges total.

Half of my kids/grandkids live in New Jersey, NOT ONE ROUND!

When traveling for vacation to a free state, Standard EDC 5 in a J-Frame, 8 in a speed strip. Plus recreational fire power! Usually a 4 gun "set" of 45 LC/12 gauge about 1200 rounds. OR 2 Sporting Clays shotguns and around 1000 rounds of ammo! In other words, 5 days worth.

Usually none, but I'm going to change that because Ohio has great reciprocity with CCW. Problem is one of my relatives live in Cali so can't go there with any CCW Florida kind of has reciprocity.

I don’t leave home without a go bag anymore, it holds a Pc Carbine, and a security 9. Both using the same 17 round mags. 8 mags loaded and a box of spares. So 136 rounds in my backpack and 13 plus one in my waistband.
I’m prepared for most imaginable circumstances.. I just wanna get home to my family and gear.

Lately it’s been 2 extra Mags for my LCP Max.
And a box+ for my 642.

Unless I anticipate recreational shooting along the way or at my destination, I bring a Colt 1911, the magazine in the gun and two spares: 22 rounds.

Consolevault in my Suburban always contains a 9mm with 5 loaded mags secured vertical by a magnetic strip. Behind a panel in the back is a breakdown Ruger .22 with a half dozen boxes of ammo. When flying I do not bring a handgun, as I only fly when heading out of country.

Sounds more than adequate to me .

With a DA revolver, enough for what's in the gun, a full speed strip, and two extra reloads in an ammo wallet.

Last time I was in Pa. visiting a friend who has a CCW, he could not carry in Ohio and they could not carry in Pa. But the guy from Florida could carry in both......go figure. I was the duty ccw wherever we went.

Ammunition is in original boxes or MTM caseguards which are placed in the same checked suitcase

The suitcase is a hard shell Samsonite with a (non-TSA) keyed lock on each side and a combo lock under the handle

On the plane I usually check a 442 or vintage cobra with a speed loader and a box of 50.If I'm driving a 442 and a model 36 or 2 vintage cobras with 2 speedloaders and 200 rounds...and Grimjaws when flying the ammo cannot be in the case with the gun but I keep it in the same suitcase.

649 pocket + 2 speedloaders , Browning hp in gear bag 2 x mags.

Banjo case in trunk , could not play a note of music if life depended on it.
But if life depends upon it the Remington 7615 is the instrument at hand.

Only problem carrying my bango case in to the hotel one night out in Colorado and a fellow said he and a couple of buddies were going to pick in the lobby and asked me to join them. Made my excuse, too tired.

I don't fly, so all my traveling is by truck. I bring my EDC and two extra magazines, as well as a secondary weapon with two extra mags packed away in my bags.

Find a way or make one.

I’m kind of weird, different, strange, you decide. I don’t fly. We drive to Florida for four months a year. I take Five guns reloads for each. Many reloads. Also I shoot in Florida. I took 700 rounds of 9mm and a couple hundred 38spl. I shot the 700 9mm. So ordered another 1,000. I don’t do a lot of other traveling. If I go somewhere for a weekend, no shooting involved, just my carry guns would go. My XDM3.8 or Glock26 for the waist. Each has several mags. I carry one extra and have a bag with the others. A pocket J-Frame never leaves me and a speed strip is also carried. The ammo bag also has more strips and speed loaders. Every day run around would be, one of the semis in my belt with extra mag and J-Frame in my pocket with extra speed strip.

Two Handguns every day

Combat Commander and two spare mags. Makes no difference when I fly.

I am very near retirement so I do not fly anymore unless I have to in an emergency. When driving somewhere I will take one fully loaded carry gun, one full standard capacity mag, one extended mag, one holster, one mag pouch, one flashlight, and my badge/creds. I also take one case that does not look like a pistol case that will hold all of the above. That will likely be unused, but I want it available if I need it.

The holster will be an AIWB. I have come to like that form of carry after many years of resisting it because it allows quick and easy access anywhere, including driving. I have managed to keep all of my upper body above and behind my belt so I am able to carry a full size auto AIWB comfortably with the right holster, although I do mostly carry a compact off duty. There are many reasons NOT to have a weapon in your vehicle and it NOT be on your person, but that is another discussion. I used to keep one in the truck, but AIWB and seeing first hand some of the cons suffered by others has eliminated that for me.

If something comes up that I need to use it, I suspect the reason for my trip will be over at that point and I would not need more. If for some reason I do I will source it locally. If I feel that there is a possibility that I will encounter something that will require more ammo than that….. I stay home.

If I am staying somewhere like a cabin for a week or two, I will take along a small PCC, possibly a can (state dependent), and 4 full mags in a discreet case. When I leave the cabin it gets locked up in my vehicle with me (trunk or lockable storage bolted to the truck) , and comes back inside when I return.

zonker5 and anyone else who depends on a pistol for self defense with no spare mag. What happens if you get that rare, but does happen, the dreaded double feed?
In tactical training on the third round with a 15 round mag it happened to me. Only once in over 10 years, but without that spare mag I would be out of the fight and probably dead. Just sayen.

If the pistol is jammed up with a double feed, it is better to have a second (backup pistol or revolver). Just sayen..........

AJ: Great point, but I can strip out the mag, clear the gun and insert a new mag in seconds. Faster than dropping gun and getting another, but thanks for the suggestion!

In another lifetime I taught a "Combat Pistol Course" for the Marine Corps. We were taught by the folks at GunSite. Don't bet you are faster clearing a jam than I am at drawing another gun. By the time most jams are cleared the gun fight is over.

I personally don’t have any place on me I can carry another gun the way I dress. I am not saying that’s not a good idea, but for most people they won’t carry an extra gun and ammo when out and about.

Read too many TEOTWAWKI novels back in the 80s/90s! EMP and other events......leaving most folks afoot.

Firearms are important but not everything........

It's <80 miles between the lake and home...... but the truck is "stocked" with food, water purification, fire starters... and other necessary "stuff" to get "home" in a 20-25 lb ruck.... at least 40 miles away ( figure two days walk).

Guns ..... my EDC generally a 3913 or PC Shorty-9; extra mag or three ..... couple of 20 rd boxes of 9mm and a Mini-14; 1-3x20 Leupold scope with 10 and four 20rd mags ....... very un-tacticool looking at 20 yds with a 10rd factory mag.( fits into a old beach umbrella bag with sling).

Have a Ruger 10/22 takedown that's gone on a few "interstate" trips... just another piece of luggage!

Too many judges and county attorneys focused on social justice rather than criminal justice. When out of town, I prefer to run than gun.

I always drive take my EDC Shield 9mm with two 8 rd mags with +2 and + 1 Mag Guts.

It depends on what I am driving and what my business is.
We ride motorcycles and adventure ride, so it sometimes takes us into rural, largely unpopulated areas, some of which have been know to have drug labs. My carry is an old Ruger P-95 with a couple of extra mags.
Other wise my Glock 43X with an extra mag, is usually enough.
Once I went to look at a car listed on Craigslist, and the circumstances seemed slightly weird, so I took the Ruger P95, and 3 extra mags, on my person, and a AR with 4 or 5 loaded mags in the truck.
I got there, and the part that made me feel weird, was explained.
The guy wanted to meet out in the country at his home, because he could not drive, and the communication problems we had was because he was old and very hard of hearing.
I felt a little bad, for being suspicious of him, and ended up buying a really good old Grand Marquis for a very fair price.
No shots were fired
