I fish the Mississippi River not that far from a big city (St. Louis).
Bad people come up from there. I'm old and alone. I want protection with me.
I had an actual incident which my 380 got me out of safely. I didn't have to draw it, but having my hand on it in my pocket got me out of there. The bad guy and his gf did not push it far enough to find out if I really had a gun in my pocket which I did.
Had a very similar incident on the gulf coast, too.
A person alone can be vulnerable but I'm not going to stop doing the things I love.

No scenarios. I get dressed the gun goes from my nightstand into my waistband. There is already one in my pocket. I go to bed the gun in the waistband goes on the nightstand. I refuse to be a victim Or at least I will try damn hard not to be.

I rarely carry but always have a 9mm in my truck.
If I’m going to the store after dark or meeting someone to sell something, I will slip an LCP or 642 in my pocket.
I live in a relatively safe area and don’t frequent questionable areas.
Yeh I know, anything can happen anywhere but odds are against it.
I did have a situation about 15 years ago while visiting a tourist town.
4 couples were walking back from the tourist area about 11:00 at night.
We were crossing a park where a couple was robbed & shot 2 years earlier, headed back to our VRBO.
Two guys in hoodies were headed straight for us. I very deliberately and blatantly put my hand in my jacket pocket where I had a 642 with a CT laser grip.
They were 20 yards from us and did a 90 degree turn.

Both of my jobs involve working at a school. So having a firearm at work is verboten! Outside of that, I carry at church. The church shooting in White Settlement, Texas awakened me for some reason. After that incident, I started the conversation with church leadership regarding our policy. In the end, we decided that having a policy gave others something to scrutinize in the event of a self defense incident. So our policy is “we have no policy “. If you want to carry, then carry. We are a Constitutional Carry state so no permit needed.

Otherwise, I carry when I travel out of state and more so lately, when I go to town (Sioux Falls).

Anywhere and anytime it is legally permitted, and some times and places it isn't.

I live in a quiet little town. But about ten years ago we had a police officer killed by someone he was serving a warrant on, right in the middle of town. That's when it struck me that bad guys are everywhere. Until then, I carried sporadically, usually more often than not, but not always. Since then, when I put my pants on there's a holster on my belt, and when I leave the house there's a gun in it.

I don't need a scenario. Of course, anyone who carries should consider all the "what ifs", but I don't dwell on them.

I don't think about scenarios, I carry because anything can/may happen at any time at any place. I doubt any scenario would happen just as I imagine.

Always, all day, every day. Sole exception is going where w firearm is prohibited (Post office, courthouse, etc.). Then it’s placed in a locked box in the console and returned to my person when I get back in the vehicle. I live in a rural area and occasionally deal with feral critters, sick (rabid) wildlife, and occasionally have to run off goblins who think “no trespassing” signs do not apply to them. On three occasions in my life I’ve been placed in a bad situation when physical harm appeared imminent. In all three cases I was able to defuse the situation without the need to point a firearm at anyone. I do not go to places I feel to be dangerous to myself or my family, and I’ll go as far as I can to avoid an attack or assault. That said, in the last resort I will always have a firearm handy. Same reason there’s a spare tire on the truck. Don’t have any plans to use either one, but if you need one, you need it badly, and nothing else will do

Seems sensible to me.............so I do!

I'll return to this subject for clarification purposes.

Courthouses generally have metal detectors but post offices do not. Post offices are "federal facilities" as defined by the US Code and firearms are prohibited therein.

But there is a valid reason to not post signs at post offices or otherwise focus on it. It's stupid, nobody cares, and everyone is safer if the public is armed and someone goes "postal".

Not a joke.............

...I can be added to the list of "all the time" carriers. On the rare occasion that someone notices and asks, "Do you think you need a gun here?" my answer is "no". "If I thought I would need a gun, I wouldn't come here, and if I had to come here and thought I neeeded a gun I would have brought a shotgun and a well armed friend."

But if you do not engage in Fantasy Gunfight Scenarios how do you ever justify buying a 23 round black plastic striker fired euro-pellet squirter with landing lights and bayonet?

Why else would you need a slide with flow through ventilation ports and a gold barrel?

All those AWIB holsters?
I heard there is going to be a kydex shortage.

When I taught school I commuted an hour each direction. An unloaded Taurus revolver and 20 rounds of ammo lived in my trunk. (Along with a tent, sleeping bag, and some other stuff).
One day they did a lock down where a platoon of cops in battle gear with dogs scoured the campus.
They didn't find my gun.
Yes, I was nervous.

There are very few things that you have to actually go to the Post Office for these days.

The last time I had to go to the Post Office I was mailing a knife to a member of another forum.

I think that was at least 3 years ago?

Maybe once or twice a year I mail letters for my neighbor that we don't want sitting in our outgoing mail over night. Those go directly to the post office

I'm pretty sure I parked in the parking lot of my church which is right across the street and left my gun in the car.

JMO breaking the law and hoping you don't get caught demonstrates really poor decision making.

I have never been to a post office Since I started carrying a concealed handgun that didn't have a sign very prominently posted at the parking lot entrance And on the bulletin board right as you walk in the door stating that it is a Federal Crime To carry a firearm ANYWHERE on post office property.

Similarly, I frequently read post from people saying that nobody searches their car at the VA and it's okay to leave your gun there. I can't speak for every VA in the country but my VA you cannot drive into the parking lot without passing the signs stating that is a violation of federal law to have a gun anywhere on the property.

I don't see this very often at the VA but I've seen it a couple times, some idiot will walk in to the building with an empty holster on their belt. At my VA there is no place within walking distance that you can park your car and then cross the street and go to the VA. And even if there was why would you get out of your car with an empty holster openly displayed?

That's just a really dumb way to poke the bear

And maybe people only very infrequently got caught but people still get caught. There was an incident here in Colorado Springs several years ago a guy got caught with a gun in his car at the Prospect Street Post Office. I think he's the one that sued to have the law overeturned.

You may get away with it a hundred times you only have to get caught once.

Well am not to old to learn, and now feel stupid. Am going to modify my behavior and the clarification is appreciated. Still go to the post office on occasion to send packages and buy stamps.

If you carry all the time, you don’t have to consider all this. Every day is important, regardless of what you’re doing at that exact moment . . .

I decided if my wife was going to have concealed handgun permit I was going to have a concealed handgun permit and we went through the class together.

When our permits arrived in the mail I didn't know anything about concealed carry. I didn't know when I should carry I didn't know when I shouldn't carry I didn't know how people decided when to carry. So, like everyone else I Googled it.

Google led me to a Firearms forum with several discussions about when to carry and when not to. The most common answer to the question was you should carry a handgun whenever you're legally permitted to do so. So that's what I did.

My program compliance was kind of spotty until the night I walked out my front door on my way to work and in between the building and my car two guys tried to rob me.

I never actually drew my gun that night. I put my hand on it and I told them to leave and they did.

I really don't ever leave the apartment complex unarmed but after that night I don't so much as go check the mail without a gun in my pocket.
Smoke, what is a W sticker?

In one of the cases a post office employee was appealing the loss of his job and his pension after Post Office police found a pistol in the glove compartment of his car while in the Post Office parking lot. It seems his estranged wife knew that he left his pistol in the car every day while he went to work in the Post Office building. I never found out if got back his job or his pension. But one thing I know for sure. You do not want to get nabbed carrying on Post Office property.

Nabbed carrying on Post Office property vs robbed and murdered not carrying on Post Office property. Which would you prefer if you had to choose? The far more likely scenario is neither of course.

Otherwise, I carry when I travel out of state and more so lately, when I go to town (Sioux Falls).
"We decided..." you said.
This is an error. The policy would work to protect those who follow the policy. The word scrutinize should reveal the error. Everything will be scrutinized! What will be scrutinized is the fact, now undeniable, that you considered and decided NOT to have a policy. Please seek legal counsel!
I am not a lawyer and I don't stay at Holiday Inn either. I invite any correction.

I do not know if he was charged criminally but he lost his job and pension because of the criminal violation.

The takeaway is: Don’t trust anyone to know that you carry illegally if the penalty is severe and you would not trust that person with something you are not willing to lose.

"You can have anything you want in this world, as long as you know how to steal it." Epic Releasing has debuted a trailer for an action thriller titled Last Rampage, about the true story of a notorious prison break in Arizona in 1978. The film stars Robert Patrick as Gary Tison, a convicted murderer who escaped from prison with his cellmate, played by Chris Browning. While the sheriff, played by Bruce Davison, was hunting him down the two went on a murderous rampage.
That's a name I haven't heard in a very long time. My family lived in Flagstaff while the Tison gang was running around. My dad was a photographer and developed some of the evidence pictures from their campsite. He had a revolver within reach the entire time the Tisons and Randy Greenawalt were loose. I was 10 years old and that was the first time I was ever allowed to have a loaded gun inside the house. A 16 gauge bolt action Montgomery Wards shotgun wouldn't be my first choice now but at the time that's what I had.

My equipment has evolved since then but the attitude of "Not my family" is still there.....

My takeaway is that I don’t work for the post office. If he wasn’t charged criminally, then that tells me I’m good, because I can’t get fired or lose my pension.

Clearly, according to every post here, he was committing a crime. Yet he wasn’t charged, or at least we don’t know if he was charged and you are just focusing on the personnel problem, which could have happened at any office park in America. Well, except for here in flyover country, where if you don’t have a pistol, we’ll give you one . . .

For almost 40 years, I’ve lived in a small town that has always been considered safe and comfortable, the kind of place where violent crime is all-but-unknown. But last fall, a young woman was murdered on a local hiking trail, and three nights ago, less than a mile from my home, a guy who doesn’t live here tried to rob a woman outside her own home, and then shot her when he was scared off by a neighbor who heard the commotion. (Thank heaven, she was not seriously injured.)

If there was any doubt that it can happen anywhere, my neighbors and I have gotten a heckuva lesson recently…

That is why I suggest "Active Self Protection" on YouTube. Most people have never seen somebody get shot or read the "bad guy/gal" Body Language.

A tip; bad guys tend to "pocket carry".

Brian, I think you're incorrect. Deciding to not have a policy - that restricts gun carrying - is kind of a policy itself BUT it is in accord with state law if the state has constitutional carry as IT'S policy. Ipso facto - no problem. That's how we handle it at my house of worship - don't ask, don't tell is what I call it. Oh, and my law degree is probably older than cajun's.....

It's not just Post Offices. All Federal buildings are off limits for carry. In Texas we can carry concealed or openly in a National Park, but not in the building.

It is possible to commit an inadvertent felony by not disarming before entering a restroom in a National Park. It's not likely you'd be caught and charged, but you never know.

I leave mine in my pants pocket at bedtime rather than leaving it on a table in plain sight where someone could take it and shoot me with my own gun if they got into the bedroom without my waking up.
The only guns I leave in plain sight at night are unloaded with no ammunition readily available.

[QUOTE=ISCS Yoda;141975093]Seriously?

If you think about it, you are most vulnerable in your lavatory and your bed. So why not keep a gun hidden in your bathroom and one nearby when you're in bed?

Seems sensible to me.............so I do![/QU

Buy one of those cheapo plastic glocks and hang it the shower.
