CCW permit as form of photo ID
I must go to New York City for two days and will need a photo ID for building entry. Because it’s NYC my weapon must remain at home, but because it is NYC I am tempted use my CCW permit as ID.
What thinks the Forum?

Since NYC has never seen a CCW, I would just bring your driver’s license or state issued ID. Don’t poke the bear.

It is a government issued document and you had to be fingerprinted to get it so it SHOULD work but in NYC I wouldn't count on ANYTHING working. Plus of course it is neither intended nor labeled as an ID so,,,....

The Ohio permit says in small print "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" across the bottom of the obverse.
My freak them out ID is my passport.

In the past I have seen places that would not accept a military ID card as identification. They wanted a drivers license, as that they understood. Did not care (read understand) that it was a federal identification. So "do not try to teach the pig to sing.....all it does is frustrate you and pi$$e$ the pig off".

I went to my regular bank to cash a check and the teller asked for ID. I gave her my state issued photo Security Guard card. There is no bar code on back. The manager refused to accept that as ID insisting on my drivers license. Why ?? I provided state issued photo ID !!
At Lowe’s you have to scan your drivers license bar code for the military discount at the self service registers (no human cashiers). At least at Home Depot you can still put in your phone number. At the doctors offices they scan your license. I was at a small gun store in Delaware a couple of weeks ago and I was buying a small safe dehumidifier thing. The clerk wanted ID and scanned the back of my license. Why ??? I was not buying a gun or controlled item. No wonder there is so much identity theft.
I’m going to start refusing to provide drivers license and saying I don’t have one…
Ok rant over……

I was going to try and use my CHP for ID when I went to vote but I checked the regs first . Whatever ID you use must have your signature on it .

Pennsylvania specifically lists a permit to carry as an acceptable form of picture ID to be used when applying to replace a lost driver's license. I was surprised when I read this on one of the forms included with my routine driver's license renewal packet.

Did you ask clerk why? Hope they had a good reason. I’d have left and bought it online

I mentioned this before. I went to a bank I had done serious business with for over 30 years. They asked for ID. No problem I just gave them my passport card. Teller said they could not take it. Called the manager over and she said the same thing they would only accept a drivers license and the "full big passport''
Amazing as most places now have notices on the door that you must show a goverment issued ID . They just do what they want it appears.
As far as the OP and New York City I would not flash my pistol permit.

It would achieve you and your group getting searched at minimum. Remember, self defense is not a defense in NYC and only cops and criminals have guns.

My Texas CHL has been my most often presented form of ID for 25 years mostly because it's the one on top in my card carrier...It's a state issued photo ID meeting all the requirements needed to identify me...I was only questioned once by someone obviously new to the state...I was paying by check, presented my CHL and the nice lady who saw my DL still in the carrier said, "You can't have two driver's licenses, that's illegal"...
I pointed out that the one in her hand was my Concealed Handgun License and my Driver's License was still in the wallet...She got that look of shock on her face, and I knew she wanted to ask if I brought a gun into the store...But she didn't and we completed the transaction without further discussion...If she had asked I might have told her, "Yeah, and I've got an extra in my boot for you in case we get into a firefight"...
I'm pretty sure she probably questioned her supervisor about it after I left... ...Ben

If you present a state driver’s license, they will assume you have a car. If you present your CCW permit they will assume…choose wisely.

I tried to use my Texas CHL as photo ID at Austin Bergstrom International Airport on several occasions and TSA doesn't like it. They ask for my DL or passport every time. Ticks me off as the guidelines say "government-issued photo ID" but I don't try to be cute anymore.

Also you would be on the list of probably gun owners for that govt to share with other govts. No point in advertising that fact. I recall (vaguely) that a numbr of states (etc) state what constitutes “legal ID.” Carry Permit may or may not be on that list. The ID checkers may not be Einsteins and the thought is to not flood their brains with too many IDs to learn.

I wouldn't go to New York City.
Seriously, I never use my CCW for identification. The fewer people who know I have one, and carry, the better.

They have updated the Texas driver's license and License to Carry to look almost identical. Both gray with the same B&W photo. Mine got out of order in my wallet and I used it at the airport, and was told it was not valid as a form of identification.

That's a variation on "wrestling with the pig" that I haven't heard! I'm agonna use it!
I'm with the peanut gallery on OP's query. What's the point of using a CCW license for ID in that city? At one extreme, it's a neener neener neener message. At the other extreme, you might be detained and searched. Unreasonable search (and seizure)? Perhaps, but do you want to fight that battle too?
I say pick your battles. This is one I wouldn't pick.

As I have gotten older and maybe wiser, the more invested I am in being as "gray" as possible with regard to firearms. I do not present my CPL or retired (LEOSA) ID for ordinary purposes. FWIW, I have an enhanced DL as that is required with a CDL, and that's as good as it going to get.

Good advice methinks. Those with a carry permit will do best when they "fly" under the "man's" radar. Being right and getting detained or denied isn't a win.

In MA, a CCL is specifically listed as acceptable ID. In less firearms-friendly states like NJ and NY, I would caution you that you are already exercising questionable discretion in BEING there, forget about taunting them with any sort of firearms permit. Many (I have not counted them) have cautioned you not to poke the bear.
A word to the wise is sufficient. Is it enough for you?

As a New Yorker, don't wave your CCW around, it'll just slow you down as you answer dumb questions and attract attention. Rent a goon might not recognize it as an ID, if it's NYPD or other LE they may start with the probing questions.
On the other hand, you might find a kindred spirit that'll talk your ear off about their vintage collection of S&W revovlers.
If you are that worried, contact the building and ask what ID they recomend or require.

It depends on just how strict the ID requirement is for entrance. CCW permits generally don't meet the federal "Real ID" standard like the majority of current DLs and State IDs do. I would stick with my DL.

My daughter-in-law doesn't have a DL, but the state issued her an ID to use where required.

I lost my DL somewhere on a 10000 acre ranch in TX during a 3 day visit mostly spent roaming around outdoors. The definition of "Never to be seen again."
At the Dallas airport on the trip home to IL, I was asked for a Government issued picture ID. I explained about the lost DL. I left my CCL in my wallet and presented my IL Firearm Owners ID. "No problem sir, thank you very much. Please step over here."
I was then subjected to every "RANDOM" check I'd ever heard of, and some I hadn't. My wife thought it was hilarious. I kept a smile on my face as I watched them remove and swab every item from my carry-on, right down to the lens wipes. We boarded on time and went home. I didn't start grumbling until we were off the ground.
My wife completely erased my bad mood: "It could have been worse, it could have happened in IL."

My son had his pilots license before he had a drivers license and the DMV wouldn’t accept his pilots license as an ID and proof of address. I always thought it was funny, at 17 he could rent a $500,000 airplane and fly anywhere but couldn’t rent a $14,000 Toyota to drive in town.

My Passport has the name I was given at birth.
I didn't get a driver's license until I was an adult, so I used my Draft Card to cash checks. That freaked out the bank tellers!

People will just get confused. Banks still insist on a DL even though most of them are easy to fake. A LTC would be better, but most places won't even know what it is.
At airports they also want a DL, passport, or Global Entry card. On a recent flight out of Boston I handed the TSA officer my MA LTC. He said that's very nice, but I need to see your Driver's License. He also commented that his application was being processes.
At one of the NYC airports producing an out of state LTC could result in the police asking if you have any firearms on you.

You’re kidding, right?
That would be begging for trouble. If you were detained and forced to endure all kinds of unpleasantness I would not feel sorry for you at all.

I'm pretty sure she probably questioned her supervisor about it after I left... ...Ben

Just tell them you are from Venezuela and seeking political asylum. You'll get a cell phone and a debit card and breeze on through.

I left it home.
But I am motivated by the fact that it would show that I am an ordinary person and I have a permit to carry.

I flew from Buffalo, NY to Phoenix Arizona with no driver's license.....just my concealed carry permit about 8 years ago.
Once I got through security with it I called my daughter and had her retrieve my license form my photocopier where I'd left it. It was Friday and I asked her to mail it "overnight" to my motel in Arizona. the PO told her overnight service would get it there on Monday. Instead, she paid FedEx $48 and it was at the desk when I checked in at 11PM that night.
Now the TSA expressly states it's not acceptable. Nonsense.

I prefer to use my DL when asked for ID...
It works every single time, no questions asked.
I see no need at all to "make a statement", and I don't understand those who feel the need to. Although, I have my suspicions...
