I am a "big" guy (5'10" about 300 lbs). Looking for best pants and shorts for pocket carry. Need alot of pockets for keys, wallet, change, cellphone, etc. Don't want something that shrinks after every wash. Have looked at 5.11's. Any suggestions from you big guys out there?

What I do is go shopping while carrying and try my guns and holsters in the clothing I'm thinking about buying. I put my pistols in my shoes (which I place on the bench) while changing so there's no way I can forget a gun in the dressing room.

I have had the best luck at Kohls. I buy Columbia brand cargo shorts and pants. The pockets give me plenty of room for my knife, money clip, business card holder, a spare speeed strip and I carry my 38 snub in a Nemisis holster in the right pocket. The holster and the right side cargo pocket break up the revolver shape in the pocket. The pocket is large enough for a clean draw from the pocket.

So, Kohls does have a "Big and Tall" dept.?

Kohl's is good, but I find that Academy's usually has a lager selection and better prices. By the way, I use pocket carry almost exclusively, and I use a lightweight vest (Cabellas) or a Maxpedition Fatboy to carry my extra pocket junk. I know, this is the reverse from the conventional way of doing things, but it works well for me.

Best of luck,

Dave

Columbia makes a rather normal pair of Docker type pants with a 'double' right hand front pocket. It looks like just one pocket but has an inner pocket with a zipper just behind the outer pocket. Can't really tell it is there.

Columbia also makes shorts with the double front "security" pocket that will readily accept a J frm in a pocket holster and conceal it quite well. My source for Columbia is Bells.
I will also second Duluth Trading Co. for their Jeans with extra deep front pockets.

I often wear Dockers, the original relaxed pleated fit, for I usually carry in left front pocket. I try to limit my junk or extras. I carry my cell on belt holder, keys in right front pocket, wallet in right rear. Left rear is often empty. I do have some Columbia items and they are good, shoes are great too. I like the 5.11 pants, but they do kinda say "cop" to some. I think it is 5.11 line that makes a neat T-shirt that has a pocket sewed under each armpit area. I use the pocket to carry light for I am a bit rounded in the middle, so I don't want to spend the day pulling up my pants. I carry an airweight smith J frame usually. I would suggest buying something loose enough so things don't show.

If you want shorts or pants that are inexpensive and perfect for pocket carry go to Walmart and get the Wrangler Cargo shorts.
6 pockets, 2 with Velcro on each side.
Plus they fit better for me than any others.

I'm tall, not big. Anyway, try your local Walmart. The one here stocks 9 pocket Wranglers. If they're like most Walmart clothes, they'll have them in larger sizes.

bought some woolrich tactical elite shorts from midway usa. gotta say that i love them. i'm on the big side too. they have elastic in the waistband so they fit when you are caring iwb, but also don't fall down with no iwb holster.

If you're looking for the 5.11 style but with a better fit for larger guys, check out the pants (and maybe shorts?) by Tru-Spec. They are light weight, and they have dozens of pockets including mag pouches, knife pockets, and more. Also, their expandable waistline is the best going -- gives freely with lots of room, and it doesn't look like the sides are going to open-up like some other brands do when they expand.

I'm sure you could find them online, but my local military outfitter carries the whole line. They're tactical-looking to be sure, but you can get them in plain solid colors. Truthfully, I like them better than the 5.11s, because they're cut more generously for men of our "advanced stature."

I'll also +1 on the Columbia pants from Kohl's. Some Kohl's have a B&T section; some don't. The only downside to those pants are the flat-front cut; yes, the right hand pocket has the hidden inner pocket (excellent size for a Kel-Tec P3AT or even a PPK), but you can't stick much in the outer pocket at that point because one's thigh takes-up most of the room in the pant leg.

Again, take a look at the Tru-Specs. At $25 per pair, they won't break the bank.

G.I. BDU pants have large pockets. Cheap too. And can be found in solid colors. Not very dressy, but any pants with pockets large enough to carry something larger then a Seecamp or Kel-Tec probably won't be.

After reading a note in this forum on the same subject I decided to buy a number of different pairs suggested in the note.

The Cabela's jeans and Columbia cargo pants have a much deeper front hip pocket than anything else mentioned.

No other jeans I have worn or at least checked out in a store are close. This includes those 'union made American' jeans someone posted about here (nice but a shallow pocket) or wranglers from Walmart.

The Carhartt's I tried from the old note also have shallow pockets. The cargo pockets are great, and yes you can pocket carry there but it seems awkward to draw, or to be prepared from such a low pocket.

I also have a pair of North Face hiking pants with the removable legs which have deep pockets but they have that artifical feel and noise to them.

I will try to find that older note and my Cabela's receipt for the pants order.

Bill

I can't find the old thread but I found my receipt. My preferences are the Columbia Lander and Cebela's Denim Cargo Pant.

LA Police Gear, has a new model of 511 Tactical pants and shorts coming out this spring called Covert Tactical "Tactical with out the look".

I obviously haven't tried them yet but have been interested in the regular 511 pants but as has been mentioned in this thread, don't want to look too obvious. these seem to address that issue

Just picked up my ccw permit this week.

I went to the Goodwill store and got two pair of almost new cargo pants for six bucks, one pair 2 inchs larger waist for iwb carry.

At those prices you can experiment with what works.
