Even I found this strange
I don't mind strange. Sometimes I even seek it out. This one I found truly uncomprehensible. I was at my LGS today and saw this in the used-consignment case. Wish I could have taken a photo but description will have to do. The base weapon was a Mitchel stainless steel Luger. It had about a 12 inch barrel on it, untapered with no front sight. There was a very nicely made scope mount on it, mounting a Weaver about 4 or 5 inches above the bore. On the side of the scope mount was a laser sight. It had a very pretty and beautifully made large, extreme target grip. It also had a hooked forend of the same wood and a bipod mount. What possible use could such a rig serve. It was very nice work, must have cost a ton of money.

How far can you see that laser at?
9mm I presume. What do you shoot at long range with a 9mm? Steel targets?

Sounds like one of the bad guys from the "Man from U.N.C.L.E." lost his gun!
Good guys carried P-38s with short barrels w/ birdcage flash suppressors.....add a long barrel, scope, extended mag and shoulder stock..... and you had a sniper rifle!!!!!!!!
Ahhhhh... the 60s had some great tech!!!!!!!
Just ask that Bond guy!

A fantasy for someone with a pocket full of cash and no kids to feed?
That's my best guess, but who knows?

Sounds to be a modern recreation of an Artillery Luger.

that would give the owner something pretty unique!!!
as a side note, I'll bet getting it to function reliably would be a challenge.

Jerry busted a balloon at 1000 yds with a 9mm Smith....Course the bullet spatter on the steel target it attached to may have busted it.

Sure hope it did not start life as an original. Man what a matching WW-2 Luger goes for today! Won't mention an Artillery model.

Mitchell made stainless steel 9mm Lugers on a "modern" CNC production line some while back. Nice looking guns. I think they were made in Texas.

You really need to go back and take a picture. I'm sure many of us would like to get a look at this thing.

With a pound and a half to two pounds of weight added to the reciprocating parts where's the added recoil necessary to make it function come from? I suspect you saw a contraption that was assembled for the movies rather than to be a functioning gun. That's more likely than you might think. A large number of guns that were owned by the rental company that supplied guns for most movies were sold by a local gun store. Hollywood quit using blanks a long time ago so they quit renting the guns. A lot of the guns in newer movies are not actually firearms.

Is it possible that it was something more powerful than a 9mm. 45 Winchester magnum or even a bottle shaped cartridge. Would explain how it would cycle and why a longer barrel would serve a purpose.
I thought the Luger action was capable of fairly high pressure rounds.

The cartridge has to fit the magazine and feed. Bottle necking would only reduce bullet momentum making things worse.
While they sold the often criticized .45 revolver withe a tubular silencer, the most memorable movie guns the local store sold were used in an early 1960s(?) Alamo movie. They were Trap Door Springfields with added non-functioning parts to make them look like flint locks. They had the priming powder pans with flap covers (frizzens?) and replacement hammers that held a flint. Loading .45-70 blanks saved time.

True on the bottle neck, but if you start with a larger case a smaller bullet will still have more recoil. As far as Magazine goes op stated " It had a very pretty and beautifully made large, extreme target grip." Possibly on an enlarged grip frame." A 357 Herret produces lots more recoil impulse than a 357 mag. 44 Automag or a necked down one? l'd really be interesting to look it over well.
A long barreled scoped 9mm just doesn't make a lot of sense, but, then some people occasionally do things that don't make sense. Me included.

ASKING PRICE?
How much for this high tech marvel? Harder to sell than a ketchup popcicle to a lady in a white dress.

While he writes about the target grip, he did not write one word about the grip frame.

Over the decades the grocery store gun magazines have run articles on gunsmiths converting Lugers to .45 ACP. The receiver or grip frame has to be extended by cutting it in half then welding center pieces to hold the two halves apart. The barrel extension has to be lengthened the same way. It is a long ways from .45 ACP to .357 Auto Mag or .45 Winchester Magnum. Also, the bi-pod would be drug across what ever it is rested on adding drag to the recoiling barrel assembly. On the other hand, you've got the time and machinery to prove me wrong.

As I recall the price was about $1300. I think it's still there. I will have to drop by and check, see if I can get a photo.
