African hunters rifle carry
I watched them on the VS TV Show, and I don't see any reason to carry a rifle on the top of your shoulder, with the barrel pointed forward. Looks ridiculous to me. Sure, maybe just to look different, or to follow some tradition........but I would carry it on a sling, or in my hands. I don't see any advantage to carrying like this.......unless it's just a "look at me....I'm cool!!!" type of thing. Bob

I have noticed that too Bob. Never could figure out a good reason why.
Seems like it would be slower to get into action.

That's what gun bearers are for.

Have you ever walked a loooong distance carrying a heavy rifle, maybe a pack and a belt loaded with 50 cal. ammo and a long blade knife? The over the shoulder muzzle forward is quite a bit more comfortable than butt forward. The forearm rides better than the mag floorplate.

I've carried a "full size" rifle, i.e. Ruger 77 in .30-06 for extended periods of time, with a full pack, knife, handgun drinking water and all of it at high altitudes on steep terrain.
I still like the sling on the right shoulder, thumb in sling, muzzle up, butt down, GI style from WWII & Korea.

The brush in RSA is fairly thick, most of it very sharp thorn brush. A sling caught on brush as well as swung around as you bent over to get through low areas. Same thing for a rifle slung over your shoulder.
My Win 70 .375 H&H weighed in at nearly 11 pounds with scope, and a full mag of ammo. After 4 or 5 hours of carrying it from hand to hand...as well as keeping the muzzle away from the PH and the tracker boys, who are generally ahead of you...carrying on ones shoulder pops to mind...and DOES work out pretty well.
And....they generally do NOT have gun bearers anymore. The hunter carries his own weapon.
