Remington 870 Wingmaster Time Capsule
Just wanted to share a neat find that came into the lgs. It's as new and complete from the factory with a really neat letter. It looks like it was given to the owner of a new 1968 AMC. Was well cared for and preserved quite nicely. Looks unfired! Really is a classic shotgun! If anyone has some thoughts about this pump, and what the value of this package could be, please share.

You need to AUCTION that to realize full value.
That's a "one off" and when someone tells you it's worth 650 in "their neck of the woods"........
RUN to the POLAR OPPOSITE "neck of the woods"
A collector will pay top dollar for that.

And shipped directly to his door since this predates the FFL requirements of GCA'68.
Sure that the shotgun is worth quite a bit more than the car now.

My '73 production wingmaster has thousands upon thousands of rounds through it since I've owned it, and who knows how many before that. Still a terror to nature's more annoying creatures.

I bought my first new 870 in 1977. It was a Model 870 SA Skeet gun. If my memory is correct, I paid about $169 for it. Sold it to buy mag wheels for my truck. Dumb move. The truck and the mag wheels are long gone. My second 870, which I have had for close to 40 years, is a "Brushmaster". Smoothbore 12 gauge slug gun with rifle sights. I will never let it go.
Edited to add...about 5 years ago, I bought the proper 870 SA skeet barrel here, in the classifieds, from forum member Bekeart. Just because.

Bought my first 870 in 1965 for $95.99 (plus tax of course). I piled up heaps of ducks & rabbits when I lived in the Mississippi Delta.
She's not quite as bright and shiny as she used to be, but she'll still drop whatever she's pointed at! LOL!

What a nice deal back then! Buy an AMC Rebel and get a Remington 870.
It wouldn't be too many years later where if you bought an AMC Gremlin they might give you a Hamilton Beech toaster.

My mother had a 1968 AMC Rebel that I learned to drive in, among other things. Then in 1984 I bought my Remington 870LH (left hand) used from the parents of a young man who had passed away, great find. Sorry for their loss... I then ordered a LH slug barrel for it, kind of unique I think. Great gun also!

Very nice shotgun. To me, and everybody I know, it's worth what any other unfired 1968 vintage 870 is worth. To a collector of free shotguns that came with a vehicle purchase, a market I suspect is pretty small, it's worth what the collector will pay and what you will sell for . . .

The beauty of this post is that in Jan of 68 it could be shipped directly to him because in Dec of 68 the GCA (gun control act) took effect. It was a PIA to deal with we had to sign for 22 shells up until the middle of 1973. Jeff

Picked up this 1957 that needed redone for next to nothing a couple years ago for my sons first hunting trip into the woods.
I complete stripped it down, cleaned it added all new springs, extractor, near new shell lifter and bolt, firing pin, aluminum follower, and a sling.
Good enough to get banged around in the woods.

You know, I have an unfired AR-15 that General Motors gave me for buying a 2020 Camaro... LOL, not in this universe! 
Awesomely cool package there. Somehow it being AMC makes it all even odder. Jeep might make more sense.

OP...that's a great looking shotgun with some neat documentation to go with it. Thanks for sharing the info and the pics.
I have one 870 that I found several years ago.......pretty much a safe queen. It was made in 1990 and is a Wingmaster, 20 gauge, LW magnum with rem-chokes. I really need to get it out and shoot it some.
Wingmasters are great shotguns. Hope that the folks that bought Remington (firearms) will get their act together and start making guns again.......with better fit and finish and quality control.

I bought a used 870 while stationed in Idaho in 1969. Paid $50.00 for it. Sold it a year later when I got orders to Vietnam. Got $50.00 for it.
Still kicking myself.

I agree with the suggestion that this should go to auction. I don't know that it's going to put anyone's kids through college, but it's a pretty unique item that some Remington collectors will go nuts over. The AMC documentation just adds to the cool factor.

I just sold 870 Wingmaster I bought new in 1966. Gun was dedicated slug gun. Never liked it and it saw little use. I sold for $600 minus the scope. Maybe should have hung on for awhile longer. 870s will be sought by new generation, like M12 Win was sought by us.

Yes, I read a book on the 870 recently and that was a promotion they ran with AMC back in the 60s. Like another said, ah those were the days...
That vintage of 870 would be superb too. They were the heydey of 870 quality!

I only own one shotgun. This 870 is from 1972. I had Scattergun Technologies do a conversion on it long before the Wilson Combat buyout. I kept the rifle sights because target acquisition, at least for me, is much quicker. I left the barrel at 20". They don't build them like this anymore. It has very low mileage, and hardly ever leaves the safe. Being a handgun fan, I'm considering using it to fund something I'll shoot.

Back in 1966, my dad bought a used Model 870 for me at a gun show. It was a field grade model, which for my arms which are an inch shorter than average made it a great trap shooting gun for me. I put a lot of rounds through it on the trap range, and it's still in good shape for using at the club block shoots. I'm keeping this gun forever.

When I was posted to Schweinfurt Germany in Dec of '69 as a newly minted 2nd Lieutenant, I bought two firearms at the post Rod and Gun Club, a '66 Browning HP for $66, which I later sold for med school tuition, and an 870. I don't recall what I paid for it, probably about the same. I have it still, mint, and iy shows the beautiful blueing Remington did on these superlative shotguns back then. Had Briley long screw-in chokes put in some years ago. Gave it to my son.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I don't own this one, and that's fine, I do have 2 870s though, and 1 is a Wingmaster. Agreed with folks who said it deserves an auction. I really just appreciate the package and it's history. This gun is older than me, but just reading that letter, I can imagine myself being the owner at the time.

I agree with the auction. Besides Remington collectors, AMC collectors might be interested. All I can tell you on value is what I'd personally pay for it. Since it isn't something I want or need, my price will be low. The guys that like this kind of thing will pay more. A collector who needs one to finish out a collection will pay top dollar. I'd take it to auction.
