This is really a Police Positive, with the short frame and what amounts to .38 S&W chambering? Not a PP SPECIAL in .38 Special? They're often confused by those who haven't read much on old Colts. (Not saying that you are one of them. Don't know you.)
Many bank guards certainly did carry the PP. Most of them don't know much about guns.

Which it is depends on how it is marked. A Police Positive Special will read Police/Positive .38 Special. If it is marked Police/Positive .38 New Police or just Police/Positive .38, then it is a Police Positive chambered for the Colt .38 New Police cartridge which is virtually identical with .38 S&W except for the headstamp and a flat point bullet instead of round nose.
Which is it?
A friend bought a PP Special .38 a few weeks ago in 98%+ condition for, as I recall, $600. It was newer from 1928 with Walnut stocks instead of Hard Rubber. This change occurred in 1926. Depending on local market and actual condition yours should be somewhere in the $300-450 range.
