The Judge 28 gauge.
All.
Browsing the internet and saw an ad for a Judge in 28 gauge. It looked big. Did not read to much of spec's. I have a low opinion of the Judge concept and I am not sure that 28 gauge makes it any better.
Just played with a weight conversion table. The standard 28 gauge load is 3/4 oz. That is 328 grain load. Might have a bit of recoil.
Opinions?

Will it fire metallic cartridges? Who makes .55 caliber rounds? Seems like another solution looking for a problem.

All.
I have shot Skeet and Sporting Clays, and hunted ARIZONA quail with various 28 gauge pumps, autos, and over/unders thru the years. The 28 gauge is a great shotgun round. The guns made specifically for 28 gauge are light and comfortable to use. They also have 26-28 inch barrels and weigh 6-7 pounds.
I think a handgun with that shell is going to be difficult to enjoy shooting. The recoil energy from a 3/4 oz or 328 grain load doing 1200 feet per second is at, near, or beyond .44 Magnum specs. I assume they will make special self defence loads, but a real 28 gauge with # 6 or #7 1/2 birdshot would be very effective at pistol ranges. Heavier shot extends that range.
I think I will keep my .44's and .45's.

Of course that's just a hollow threat. There's no way he would survive a trip that far nawth. For him, its near the arctic circle.
Better still about the gun, Judge owners are discovering the ammo shortage isn't over. And when they can find ammo, they discover that .410 ammo costs as much or more than 12 gauge. Wait till they see the price on factory 28 gauge!

I think maybe 20 gauge would be the way to go.
That way you can have a revolver in 20 gauge shot and .600 nitro!
It might look something like this....

Or you can get S&W version of the Judge, with Hogue K/L frame compact grips.
First they copy Ruger, now ............ Taurus.
Didn't it used to be the other way around ?

How does this not violate the larger than .50 handgun regulations? Shouldn't this be an AOW?

Had this same discussion at the local gunstore today.
One option is smooth bore.
Another option is to choke the muzzle to .499.

It's actually the rifled barrel that keeps it from being an AOW. Any smoothbore pistol is automatically an AOW. Anyway, all they need is a sporting purposes exemption from the ATF, the same as routinely given for big game rifles.
I dislike snakes, and though I don't trust Taurus' QC, I'd likely purchase one of these things.
Given the weight I've read, recoil shouldn't be much of an issue, probably less than an N frame with magnum loads.
As soon as someone offers 28 gauge slugs, it ought be truly interesting. That's a big hunk of lead.

And the boat to mount it on!
Actually, I'd settle for a lowly 8 Ga. firing those industrial slugs.

My track reccord for predicting firearms successes and failures isn't very good. I attended the first dog and pony show Glock had for LEOs in Texas. I tagged along with a friend who was an ADA. On the way back to Houston, I remember telling him that no one was going to buy a plastic pistol and that we would never hear from those people again.
When the Judge hit the gun rags, I thought I might buy one as an investment. Since they couldn't possibly sell more than a few of them, they would surely become valuable collectors items.
Now everyone I know has one of the darn things. My plumber has one. One of my mother's "younger" friends, who is a 77 year old retired school teacher has one. I see people shooting them at the range nearly every time I go.
Even some of the benchresters have shown an unhealthy interest in them.
28 ga? Why not? They'll probably sell a million of them.

The Rossi Circuit Judge is the way to go. Where, I don't know, but a revolver rifle?
Maybe some of the finer Trap and Sheet Clubs ?

I think if the ammo company’s make a load with 3-5 disks, flat, with a piece of thin paper in between with the combined weight of about 300 gr. Going about 900 fps it would be a pretty good night stand gun.
Big and heavy to suck up recoil, disks would not over penetrate interior walls, spinning disks would throw a wide pattern at 20 feet and getting hit by them would probably let most of the wind out of your sails.

I'm going to get one once out- rebarrel it to something a bit longer (with just enough light rifling to stay away from NFA), slap in a choke tube and have a better rat gun than my custom .410 Judge.
Good idea, but needs refinement- a longer back-bored (and minimized rifling) barrel, choke tubes and wood grips.
I'm just not certain what bore blank to start with...need to do some research.

Seems ATF put a stop to it the other day on the 28 ga and on the .410 Mare's Leg. More to follow as they determine what to do.
