The M1911 -- Official State Gun?
The Utah legislature is considering a bill introduced today that would make the M1911 the official state gun, much like the state bird or mineral.
This is an effort to commemorate John M. Browning, a Utah native.
So, what gun do you think should be the official gun of your state?

Georgia- the axe handle.
We had a former governor that made that famous...Redlevel and others know what I'm talking about.
Actually the single barreled shotgun- as it has been the official arm of farmers and hunters here since it was invented. Although, most city slicker hunters have to have something much, much more expensive, with more barrels or more inertia driven prowess anymore. I blame it on peer pressure and advertising.

I could say the Barret 50 cal. made in Murfreesboro, Tennessee but I'll stick with the 1903 Springfield because of this guy.

New York - Remington 870 made in Ilion. Or maybe some variety of Kimber from Yonkers. Or more realistically a spork...

Oh great. Hi-Points are made in Ohio. 'Course to balance that out, Ohio Arms is also here with their Browning 1919's and BARs converted to semi-auto, bless 'em.

In the Peoples Republic of California, it would have to be a manhole cover...made from melted Smith & Wesson registered .357 Magnum revolvers (bad, evil guns).

Illinois, probably a water gun, as the last state that will ever have concealed carry. But Springfield Armory is located here so commemorate it with a 1911 "loaded".

For California, I was going to suggest a ping pong ball "burp gun." But even those "paint a portrait of violence."

for Illinois's state gun i think it should be the Henry Rifle because the 7th Illinois infantry used it in the American civil war.

I thought everyone knew what you were talking about. My uncle lived there when he was governor, and thought he was one of the better ones. Made a fair-to-middlin' attempt at closing down Ludowici and other such places, as I recall.

For Kansas, the 1927A1 Thompson 45acp... Because of the old school Gangsters. Worked at a S/o in eastern kansas that had one of Bonnie and Clydes guns on display in the lobby.

Oklahoma...???...I heard the Oklahoma Highway Patrol special ordered stainless S&W M-64s chambered for .357 Magnum before the M-65 was introduced. This later helped to bring out the M-65, but I don't know if it's true?

IIRC, Sgt. York's rifle was not a Springfield M1903, but an M1917 Enfield.
A small aside... I got to meet Sgt. York when I was a young boy in the late 1940's. I don't remember a lot about it, but my dad said he was a very quiet and unassuming man.

In that March 2005 issue of American Rifleman York's son, Andrew emphatically stated that York didn't like the peep sights on the Enfield so he finagled a Springfield somewhere. Battlefields are full of whatever firearm used in the field, hence all the Lugers in the U.S. Can we ever prove this, no but the position of the NRA is that York used a Springfield 1903, a Luger and a 1911 to surround 132 Germans.
Besides Gary Cooper used a Springfield in the movie, he used a Luger because 45acp blanks weren't reliable. According to Andrew the movie was as close to fact as you could make a movie.
General Julian R. Lindsey "Well York I hear you captured the whole damned German Army."
York "Nossir I only have 132 of them."
Lindsey "How did you do it?"
York "I surrounded 'em."

Where We Stand
By my count, we've got only 20 states represented so far in this thread.
Let me urge others in states not yet represented to make their nominations. Although I do not live there now, I did previously (prior to voting with my feet) and so, I nominate the following as the Official Gun of the District of Columbia.
Bullseye
P.S.: Why have we not heard from Massachusetts? I understand that there is a revolver manufacturer in Springfield with which some of us have at least a fleeting acquaitance.

In the interest of historical accuracy, those were pick handles.

I recall that. The media called it an axe handle, but wasn't it really a pick handle (a much better club IMO)?

I will graciously disagree with the opinions of my fellow Texans above. The official gun of Texas should be the Walker Colt. After all, it was invented for us, and in 1847, it WAS the Dirty Harry, most powerful handgun in the world. (at least with a cylinder)

I can neither confirm nor deny this, but I've heard it too. That would be a great state gun as far as I'm concerned.

For Florida, Maybe the new Governor? Shot loads for the snakes, .45's for the gators. About the only use I can think of for the thing! Plus it's a weird gun, and some wierd stuff happens around here.

For Arizona, I'd nominate the .45/70 trapdoor Springfield carbine - the gun that really settled this state.
