Default Walther P22?

I know its not a Smith & Wesson, but does anyone have any experience with the Walther P22? Experience? The good, the bad, the ugly? Thanks this site always has a wealth of knowledge.

I've had one for a few years now. We've put a few 1000 rounds through it now and have not had one problem.

I've heard it described as "The Bic Lighter" of 22 pistols, also. All I can say is that mine's been great.

Same here. Bought one for my daughter about four years ago. She has put about 2000 rounds through it. Never jams and is always accurate. Great for smallish hands.

However, I don't believe them to be a high round count gun. I've seen a few rental P22's break hard requiring replacement.

I have 3 its the only gun that I have ever brought home that my wife has claimed as her own. My favorite one is the green one but she has claimed it too. I first one I saw had a silencer on it. I dont want to pay the tax stamp so I'm going to get a fake one. As far as shooting I've not had any problems if I remember correctly there was an issue with the magizine in some causeing a ftf. doeboy

I've owned 2 and they were both great, loads of fun, and ate cheap Federal bulk ammo all day. I tried unsuccessfully to get mine to fail by loading 4 mags at a time and firing rapidly and repeating that cycle over and over again, not even one hiccup. I did do the P22 tuning steps as outlined over on the rimfirecentral.com forum and my gun ran flawlessly after that. The longer barrel one I bought used off a member here had some problems when I got, it was very dirty for one, and wouldn't work in double action. I sent it off to S&W and they quickly repaired it and sent it back to me at no charge. Awesome service. Get one, you'll like it, Shoo

i saw one at a local pawn shop when they first came out. i was already a P99 owner, and i loved it immediately. i bought one shortly after that, and i still have it. mine has been flawless. i love it. i actually ran across a thread about some p22 problems/horror stories a couple of years ago, and i could hardly believe what i was reading. i think it is proof of a few "problem children" getting lots of press, and thousands of happy customers plinkin' along happily and quietly.

Bic Lighter.

My daughter wanted one because it is small and fit her hands well, so I bought it. She likes it ok.

Me, I'd not spend money for one. It is decent to stick in a back pocket for hiking, which I have done maybe twice. It isn't a target pistol, but is accurate enough to teach a new shooter with. The trigger isn't great, but isn't bad either.

It is a vanilla gun for me. Not bad at all, but there are so many other choices out there it just wouldn't be my pick for anything. No problems with hers that I can remember, but it doesn't get pulled out of the safe for range duty very often either. Which says something about it I suppose.

I have one, very happy with it. Extremely accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Never had any problems with mine, up around 7,000 rounds through it. Not one FTF or jam no matter what ammo is. My dad liked it so much, he has since bought one also. Joe

They look like a fine little pistol, but I just picked up a Beretta 21 this weekend instead. Wanted something that I could stick in a pocket as a BUG as well as a plinker.

I guess I'm the odd man out !! Bought one about a year ago, from the get go it had issues with ejecting spent cases, went through every type of ammo I could get my paws on . found a few that the gun liked, but finally decided to send the piece back to S&W to have them check it !! That was 5 month ago and have gotten no joy or answers ....STILL WAITING !!

While I considered one, I never dropped the dime. Glad I did not either as my experience with the other samples I have seen has been poor. Jam-o-matic. Perhaps it was only the several that I've run that suffered these jamming symptoms but I prefer my 9 shot revolver...

What am I comparing to? Well, my fav is a S&W Model 46 7" but also like a Beretta Neos 6" (w/ built up grip), a S&W Model 2214, a Taurus 94 4", a Taurus 94 Ultra-Lite snubbie, with the little snubbie being my favorite for carry. The 46 is darn near a museum piece that will one-hole if I do my job. The 2214 is cute and runs great but the old guy in me leans back toward revolvers...

If my buddies P22 would have run through just 2 magazines without issues, I probably would have bought one.

Now that 22LR ammo is unobtainum, might as well shoot some 9mm and 38 Special, and save money!

And if I ever DID get one, I'd have to go with the old school desert camo I saw it in. The camo would be the main reason for purchase too...

I have one that has been absolutely trouble free. Like DOEBOY1 above, my wife claims it as her own and it's great for those with small hands like women and children.

I would also recommend a very similar gun, the Ruger SR22. I regularly run my P22 and SR22 side by side. Though I have zero complaints about the Walther, I tend to favor the Ruger.

Just picked up a P22 Tactical today. I want to start my granddaughter off with something she can handle. Any special ammo needed or is the bulk 22LR good to go? Thanks in advance.

I've had mine for quite some time..I tend to shoot mainly CCI mini mags and stingers, with no issues..I recently ran across some remington bulk ammo that I had forgetton about..!50 or so rds, ran just fine...
My only beefs with the pistol are that every so often the safety / decocker needs to be tightened...Also the rear sight notch is quite wide...

I looked at one years ago and thought it looked like a cap pistol, but the thing that turned me against it was it didn't have a decocker.

I ended up buying a Bersa Firestorm 22, and shot the snot out of that little gun for years. Thousands and thousands of rounds.

My wife (sounds familiar) picked one out because it fit and looked FUN.

Well fun is the operative word...the gun is a hoot to shoot. Many people enjoy this little pistol. It is a 75% scale of a P99.

I took it down and was not very impessed. And most important to me: the accuracy is not there. The accuracy is what displeased me, it used any ammo and cycled very well. When compared to other 22 pistols I have (any other) the accuracy was less....did I mention my disappointment with the accuracy?

All that said, it is a good beginner gun, a good trainer. Not too many people can out shoot a gun anyway.

My preference would be the longer barrel modle.

Have fun, stay safe, stop hoarding ammo...give the rest of us a chance to hoard some.

Im gonna have to agree with you, sort of. I had the walther and after 1000 rounds it started messing up. To my frustration i sold it. Recently i picked up a Ruger SR 22 and to me its a superior pistol.

I purchased one of the first ones, with the defective magazines. Sent them off recently to S & W, to replace them.

The gun would NOT extract unfired cases, so I added an Exact Edge extractor. Installed it on a Monday, and then found out the factory extractor was defective, and Smith would replace it with an improved one. Should get all the new stuff soon.

I had a P22 back in '09. It was a nice little shooter that I eventually traded in for another pistol.

If it were me though I would wait and instead go for Walther's new .22LR PPK/S when they become more readily available later this Spring or Summer. They are made in Germany in the same factory as the P22. More info:

I have one. I love it. I originally bought it to get my wife shooting, but it's my favorite plinking gun when we go out.

I bought one of the early ones; wouldn't feed much of anything reliably. It went back to S&W and they corrected that problem but they could do nothing about the inaccuracy.

I have one, and love it. Didn't take long to get everything broken in, maybe 100rds, and it's been flawless ever since. I've probably run 1000rds or more through it since I bought it in the fall. Pretty accurate for my standards. But, at the range it usually gets claimed by the fiancee, leaving me to shoot 9mm. But I just picked up a 9 that she likes, so maybe I will actually be able to shoot the P22 again...

I have one. I've only 500 practice rounds through it. I honestly love it. I use to carry it, but then I went to a Ruger LCP due to it's weight and size.

I've never ran into a problem with mine. Plus, it looks cool as hell... that's why I like it so much.
