Opinion on Ruger Security Six?
Local shop has a very clean one for $300. I already have a 686, and a Model 10, but something about that gun is calling to me. I'll admit it is not as pretty as a S&W, nor not as refined, but I also think it could make the perfect bedside/woods gun that i don't care so much id it gets a blemish. I would jump off a bridge if my 686 got messed up.

If it was a stainless, short barrelled model, I'd be jumping at the chance to get it. I foolishly sold off my three inch stainless Speed Six, and I'm feeling the pain of it being gone now. These guns are just as nice as a K frame in my opinion, but just not as refined.

It's a stainless, 4" with aftermarket wood grips.

I had a SS 4" Security Six that I sold. (regret) It was built like a tank. NO LOCK either. I was so impressed with it, that when it came time to buy a "J" frame sized .357, I bought a Ruger SP101. I would have entertained the thought of a S&W, but I hate the lock! And I'm a stockholder in S&W!

I got a blue one for essentially the same reasons. I think it was a security guard gun. Worn right grip panel, etc., and not much evidence of having been shot much.
It's a great gun for your purposes. Mine has a pretty darn good DA trigger pull--it feels different than a Smith, but it's smooth and not too heavy.
I think given the prices I've seen for them that's not a steal but a pretty good price.

My 6" is extremely accurate and with a pair of Pachmayrs is as good an all-weather revolver as you can find. Mine had a very heavy trigger pull, an after market spring set (Trapper or Bullseye-I forget) solved that.

Unless it is beat to heck that is a steal. I would jump all over that smoke wagon. I have a six inch blued steel SS and I love that gun. The GP100 is nice and built like a .357 tank but the SS's were from a more refined time with a more elegant look to them. And they were still built like tanks. Just slightly less armored tanks.

Just remembered--there is a fairly easy guide out there to smoothing up the trigger. I think I have a PDF file of it. I got it on the Ruger Forum. Might even be a sticky over there. Smoothed up the trigger on mine which wasn't bad to start with. If you get the gun and want to do it and can't find it on the Ruger Forum, let me know and I'll see if I can dig it up.

The Security Six and the Speed Six are fine revolvers. They are big 'ol beefy six shooters. Everybody needs a few 357's of different breed.
Here's one with a Mod 19-3.

What Rule 303 says. I have a Service Six and a pair of Speed Sixes; they are rugged revolvers, a bit heavy but solid.

The wife and I have eight Ruger revolvers. Here's a few:
Speed Six and custom stainless Service Six:
A 4" and 6" Security Six
This Service Six is what my wife used for her CCW class;
It's not hard to do a trigger job on a Ruger Six. My mother's blued Service Six is as smooth as the smoothest Smith & Wesson
The old Security Six is actually HEAVIER than the new GP-100, and it's noticeable when you hold them.
The wife and I like the old models better than the new ones. I feel they are stronger than a S&W.

I bought a new 4" years ago. It was a tack driver. It would shoot with both of my 28's that I have had.
My Ex-wife still has it.
I have never heard a complaint about how one shot, or held up. At $300 it is a steal in my opinion.

Rugers are great guns. They're work horses not prima-donnas. If I needed a .357 in a survival or battlefield environment, I'd take a speed 6 and never look back.

Sort of a M19/66 on steroids. The trigger can be made to work pretty well, but it won't quite be a Smith trigger. Bore axis is a bit higher. Good, durable gun. $300 is a pretty good price for a SS model in nice shape. I sold a blue model with some minor cosmetic issues last year for $275. It was a very nice shooter, but certainly no collector piece.

I got a 6 inch Stainless Sec Six. We're not allowed anything less than 106 mm barrelled handguns. If I were and the same opportunity to buy a SSS with any bbl 4 inches or less at 300 bucks, its a no-brainer.... BUY!

I put moly on the trigger sear on my '76 ruger security six when it was brand new. It was my first revolver test using moly as the lube. It smoothed out the trigger and lessened the trigger pull by up to 50% right away. I use moly to lube all my guns now. Bill
Moly;
Eliminates all wear
Reduces Friction
Prevents Galling
Stays were we put it
Fights Corrosion
ect...

I sold my NIB 66-1 and got these two Rugers and love them both. The Speed six is only one quarter ounce heavier than the 66 so all the weight difference stories are put to rest. The Speed-Six with it's fixed sights shoots exactly to POA with hot 357s or target loads at 25yds. I have to say I was amazed. I had a 2.75 inch SS Security-Six back in 1975 and sold it in the 80's. I have regretted it ever since. Before my middle son went in the Coast Guard he wanted to get a handgun so we started looking in the gun shops here. Low and behold I saw a 4" SS Security Six that looked like it was stored in a tool box but they only wanted $200 for it. I told him to buy it before it disappeared. It was a good thing he did because the guy behind us wanted it. It cleaned up and finished real nice after a few hours of work. As I worked on the Ruger it made me want another 357, after all I had several hundred rounds of ammo from the old one I had years ago. The next gun show I found the 66-1 and was glad at the time to find it but I still missed the old Security Six. It was like a void had to be filled so I started looking for any of the Sixes and found these two. The Speed is a 1979 and the Security is a 1985. They both cleaned up well and are as good looking as my son's. The triggers on these 2 guns are almost every bit as good as the 66 was and it was near perfect. The accuracy is better than the 66. These revolvers are so rugged and well made I will enjoy passing them on to my boys some day.
My Speed-Six and Security-Six
My 66-1 that I sold.

Most under rated revolver ever made. Also believe it was Bill Rugers best double action revolver. I have a old Police Service Six 4 inch. I have had this revolver the longest out of all my revolvers. A lot of holster wear and a lot of rounds put through it. Still locks up tight. I would jump on the revolver.
Good luck,
Howard

There is no more reliable revolver made than a Security Six IMHO. I have had several over the years and still have a 4" stainless. It is a rock. They are the most utilitarian 357 built. You need that gun!

The ink would be on fire as I wrote the check for the Sec. Six. Fantastic, overbuilt accurate revolver. Bill Ruger hit a home run with his first D/A revolvers.

I got one brand new in the 70's.
Foolishly traded it for a 6mm Remington rifle that I hardly ever fired.
After years of regret about that trade, I now own two.
I issued the rougher of the two to my sister after I confiscated this abomination from her.
The Security Six is NOT a small gun.
Compared to "full size" (G17) Glock.

Bill Ruger and his firearms have always been given special accolades and I'm probably the only shooter who doesn't particularly care for the revolvers that are "built like tanks." They both look and feel clumsy and awkward and have comparatively rough actions. Too many years of classic Smith & Wesson shooting has spoiled me.

Oh no no my friend. The ones I have are as smoothe as any smith with no after work. I don't think they look and feel clumsy and awkward at all, I think they look classic, as in clean and uncomplicated. That side plate thing is obsolete. Also they don't go out of time like smiths do. They are what I would call a masterpiece.

A Ruger revolver is like a homely wife who can cook, keep house and raise the kids to be good citizens.
A Smith&Wesson revolver is like a trophy wife who can almost do the same things.
Because my problem is I cannot choose between the two, I have and love both brands. Problem solved.

I have got a 686P in six inch stainless, a Security Six in four inch stainless and a "shooter" Speed Six in four inch stainless. I like both the Rugers and the S&W. All are great revolvers IMHO.

To me the Secuity Six is as good a defense gun as any made -- they ain't purty -- but they work as well as any revolver I have ever owned -- and I have owned a BIG bunch of them -- all brands -- over the years

The first really "nice" gun I ever owned was a Security Six with the 2-3/4" barrel. Loved that gun! I'd love to find another one but blued ones with that barrel are apparently rare as hen's teeth. Not long ago I picked up a really nice 4" but it just didn't move me so it moved on down the line.

Can't say as to price, but as to reliability I've been very satisfied with my 4" blue .357, which I purchased in 1985. At the time, Bill Jordan (who was still alive back then) commented in Guns & Ammo that it's one of the strongest designs ever made. From the massively heavy top strap in these photos, you'll see what I mean.

You need it
You need that gun. Very utilitarian for what you want to use it for. Make a great nightstand job. I had to trade in my model 10 snub and I wish I still had it. Perfect for what it was intended to do.

I have two Security Six revolvers; one four inch and one six inch. The Pachmayr grips make a big difference in handling those heavy revolvers as opposed to the original (and slippery) factory grips.
I bought both revolvers used and immediately detail stripped them for thorough cleaning and a good lube job. That's the neat thing about the Rugers; ease of maintenance. Triggers on both are nice and smooth and of course full house magnum loads are a non-event.

Go to in house:
2 & 3/4" SS Speed Six loaded with Buffalo Bore 158 +P's.
End of the world bag:
4" SS Security Six loaded with the same
and 500 Federal 125 357's.
Strong as a bull and no tools needed to take them apart
except a screwdriver to remove the Pachmayr grips.
GREAT guns!!!
