Default QUESTION FOR A 1911 EXPERT

Here's a 1911 I picked up recently that has been chromed, which I am rescuing.
My question is, what does the R 44 stamped on the bottom of the trigger guard stand for?
I'm thinking a 1944 rebuild. Am I right?
