A S&W purist tries a Ruger GP100

Ruger makes for darn fine revolvers! I've never owned the GP100 but a friend has one that he lets me shoot sometimes. I do have the GP's little brother, the SP101 and it is a great little shooter too.

Congratulations on a beautiful gun. I've always believed that those that restrict themselves to only one brand of fire arms is missin' out on some great guns and some great fun....

Nice thread revival!
I bought a brand new GP100 over a year ago and its at 500 rounds of assorted .38 and .357 at the moment. I found a pair of original GP grips the ones with the wood insert, and it made a big improvement over the Hogue's that came with it. This is my knock about .357 and stays loaded with the 125gr Rem. JHPs.
This past summer I found a Speed Six with 2.75 inch barrel..now here's a real nice packin revolver and I prefer it to the SP. both are stainless and both go to the range regularly. A really nice pair of working sixguns indeed!

Nice to see my thread from more than two years ago is still generating interest! I still have the GP100 and my daughter still enjoys shooting--she still enjoys her Henry Mini Bolt but now enjoys shooting some centerfire firearms as well!

Reading it I realized that I do not really want to see my GP100 which is in the classified forum right now. I would regret it for years. Like the lover that got away! I have thee guns up. My extra 686 is sold as is the 36-7. If this was a Ruger forum that would probably be gone also. I am going to withdraw it before it is too late.

Very nice! I was at a LGS yesterday and they had a used sp101 and a used security six. I examined them both and I think I'll go back and negotiate for the security six. I liked the SS finish better than the newer finish on the sp101. Whichever one I decide on it will be my first Ruger double action revolver!

I love shooting my Dad's 4" GP. It's a great gun and as much as I love many others I just seem to be able to shoot better with the Rugers than anything else.

Isn't that what matters?

I agree. I shot a 6" GP100 today, my first time with a Ruger wheel gun, and was impressed by the double action trigger. It was factory stock and the trigger was every bit as smooth as a Smith. Trigger pull was also lighter than a stock Smith. Single action trigger didn't compare to a Smith but overall, I liked it a lot.

Rise from the grave!

I too own a couple Ruger GP100 revolvers. A 4" stainless steel and a blued 3" with fixed sights. I like the GP100. I'm a dye-in-the-wool S&W man, but the GP100 has it place. I'm very happy to have a couple of them in my safe.

I don't have a photo of my 3" GP100 yet.

Oh my goodness, thank you for the kind replies. As for a quick update, I still have the GP100, and my youngest child (featured in post #1) started High School this week

As for Bill Ruger and his comment about the AWB. Get over it 'ya crybaby. He is DEAD. Why hold his comments against the hundreds of AMERICANS who work at the Ruger plants?

I like that your daughter decorated her Henry with the decals. I hope she's kept it!
By the way, my folks live in Hammonds Plains, NS. I keep asking them to find a place to shoot so I've got something to do when I go in the summers. They still have a couple old Cooeys, but they just sit in the safe. Alas, no GP100s (or "grandfathered" J-frames!).
Well, at least I get to kayak on their lake, with a couple beavers and, yes..... dragonflies!

It's s shame you're in Canada because the 3" GP100 is a nice model. I'm a big fan of the short grips that used to come standard on the 3" version. It also works well on the full sized model. At least if you have smallish hands like me.
