Default Ruger Convertible - Opinions

I've been offered a Ruger Single Action .22 convertible (with extra Magnum cylinder), 4.6" barrel, by a person who's moving out of state. I would have to drive a couple of hours to see the gun and am unsure if I want it anyway (unless the price is right). Does anyone have any experience with this gun?

I've owned probably a half dozen of them over the years. Sold every one for more than I paid. I'd still have one if i didn't have a Colt .22 New Frontier. They are a great plinker , not the most accurate .22 sixgun, but practically indestructable. The 'New Model' (XR3Red) Ruger grip doesn't fit my hand well though.

I'm still looking for a good deal on a Bearcat.

IMO, you never go wrong with a Ruger at the right price. I have 3 .357 Blackhawk, .44 mag Bisley Vaquero and a Bearcat, all accurate and fun to shoot.

I bought one in 1961. 1000's of rounds through it. Jackrabbits, badgers and other critters by the score.

Still got it. My Son will get it someday.

They are great small single action revolvers - and versatile, if you have use for .22 Mag rimfire. I have hardly ever shot Mag from either of mine - a 9.5" NM Liberty and a 5.5" OM. Reasonably accurate [~1.5-2.5"@25 yds] with ammo they like; and finding that accuracy sweet spot is half the fun!

They are such a classic that you can hardly go wrong. The shorter bbl ones - 4.625" and 5.5" are preferred by many, but the 6.5" and 9.5" have their adherents.

Regards,

Dyson

They are excellent quality guns, but not the most accurate, due to the compromises made to accommodate both calibers. .22 magnum ammo has a bullet diameter of .224, and Long Rifle is .222, so the barrel has to be made for a .224 round. Also, .22 WMR was designed for rifles, and does not reach it's full potential when used in a handgun.

That being said, if you're just looking for a plinker with minute-of-soupcan accuracy, you can't go wrong with the Single Six.

I've got a 4 5/8" (4.6") Single Six in stainless steel. It's one of a limited run that was done done for Lipsky's. I really like the gun, shoots great, likes the cheap stuff; Blazer .22s, so that's always nice... I also like the versatility of the .22 mag cylinder, has come in handy on a couple of critters. Very solid .22.

I do know that the short barrel SS's are desirable, mine's a keeper.

I had one. Single Six Convertible Stainless. Typical Ruger. Fairly accurate, strong as hell. Sold it to a friend years ago. Not even sure if he still has it. Personally, I'd rather have an S&W K-22, Model 17, Model 18, or even a J-frame Kit Gun, etc. I just prefer the feel of a double-action revolver...I have nothing bad to say about the Ruger single-actions I've owned...just not my cup of tea.

I've got one for each hand:

Phenomenal revolvers right out of the box. All I do to them is install a Wolff spring kit (mainspring and trigger spring) which is fairly easy to do by just following the instructions. Gives the gun a 3 pound trigger pull.

I love mine and shooting .22 shorts, longs, long rifles, or switching the cylinder and shooting .22 magnums makes it a very versatile gun. Some quality leather and its a great gun for plinking.

Every gun guy should have a Single Six convertible. That was my first handgun, and I still have it.

I'm happy with my Single Six. As stated, so so accuracy with .22LR but mine does right well with the cheaper Win Dynapoints from Wal-Mart. Don't sell the .22 magnum short in a revolver. It still has quite an edge over the .22 LR. Only problem is the price of the magnums.

I've never owned a .22 convertable but do own a .45acp/.45Colt model, also a .357/9mm, the last is an old model 3 screw. Both are fun and accurate, gives you a bit of an option for reloading and shooting. The .357/9mm even has an added trigger shoe on it.

I've had my Single Six for years. I find it to be a fun plinker. It's accurate enough. The .22 lr cylinder seems to be more accurate with standard velocity. I've thought about selling or trading mine for years, just never have gotten around to it. It appears that I'll keep it.
