Hey, gang. I was at the local fun store the other day, and they had a Stevens 311D side-by-side 12 gauge for sale. I figure it's made by Savage, so it can't be that bad....or can it?

I'm unfamiliar with these, so any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Herk

I have had a 311A 20 Gauge for 35 years. Got it for my 11th birthday. It's a great shotgun. Balances really well and shoots great. Not sure how it is different from the D model.

Had one for many years. Good hunting shotgun. Teeth-ratlin recoil.

I have the same shotgun.....Great shooter...

I have a 311H. (12ga) Somewhat heavy, but reliable as a brick. They will most likely last forever.

I had a 311 D back in the 1970's. I got it from a friend who's father had given it to him. I don't know how old it was. The metal looked good but some one had refinished the stock, and had not done a good job. The gun was nice and tight and worked fine. I paid $5.00 for it. I traded it to a guy for a doggy Remington Model 11. Which I traded to another guy for an early Broomhandle Mauser. Which I traded to another guy for a 1930 Commerical Broomhandle and an Interarms Mauser HSC in .380. Best $5.00 I ever spent. But I would buy and shoot a 311 D in a heart beat if the price was right. It was not made as a fancy gun but was reliable and did what it was supposed to do.

When I was 19 I went to a gunshow at the Astrohall with money I had saved to purchase my first long gun bought by me, myself, and I.

I purchased a Savage 311 12 ga with 28 inch barrels.....28 yrs later and that shotgun is still with me. If you want a no-frills double barrel for the field or farm it is hard to beat.

I started the dove season this year with a 311A 16 gauge. Got to love a double gun. An old but good firearm. The gun did its part quite well but sadly, I didn't. Buy it if you can. Should be less than $200.00

I have a 311 12ga that I got for Christmas in 1971. I was given the choice between getting a class ring for high school or the shotgun. That decision was very easy. I've had it for about 40 years now and have used it for everything you can use a shotgun for and then some. It has been used to hunt everything from squirrel to deer with shot and slugs. I shot hundreds of clay targets with it using a hand thrower as a teen with my pals. It has served for home defense and to run off unwanted critters. Its not elegant or light. It has two triggers and extractors and the trigger guard is stamped metal. The stock is...well, its wood. I love that old gun as much as one can love an object and wouldn't trade it for a much fancier smoothbore. A great deal of the value of it is personal and subjective but its a tough gun that has held up to many years of hard use and works as good as ever...

Thanks for the inputs, guys. I was unable to get back to the store until yesterday, and they had already gotten rid of it. Oh, well. The 311 is on my radar, and I'll just keep my eyes open.

Thanks again,
Herk

What a solid and dependable workhorse. I use mine in SASS shoots and it always delivers. I finally put a new spring kit in it that I got from Brownell's. I am at least the 5th owner of the gun and I know from the other two owners that they fired hundreds of thousands of rounds in it before I got it. Get one soon and enjoy!

The first new gun I bought was a Stevens 311, in 12 gauge 3" magnum. Bought it way back in 1976 and still have it. Built like a brick and reliable as all get out. I think I paid $115 for it new. Lately I've seen similar models in 12, 16, or 20 gauge sell for around $300 used and at auctions.
It has been my primary shotgun for all purposes and has been carried for miles in all sorts of weather. It's even been dunked while in a canoe. A couple years ago I slipped and fell down a stream bank during duck season and cracked the butt stock. Got another from Gun Parts for around $30 and she's good to go. Mine is well used! :D
She may be a little on the heavy side, but she has never failed me.

John
