Question Regarding AR-15 Uppers
(Please feel free to correct any errors of terminology or identification I have made.) Into my possession this day came a pair of A-2 Uppers. No markings I can see. Not beauty queens but not beat up. Seller said they were Colt. I have no idea how many manufacturers made A-2 Uppers, or how to tell them apart.
One has what I call a semi auto bolt carrier, which I consider a Colt spotting feature (doesn't mean BCG came with Upper however.) The other has what I call a full auto BCG.
Any ideas what I just bought?

You are correct on the bolt carrier group. One of them is a 'non' FA carrier. I don't see any forging (makers) marks on either upper, and unable to tell by the pics on either of the 2 carriers. Are there any markings on the top of either carrier, or, on either bolt? It would appear by the pics that neither upper is a Colt, by can't be 100% sure. My gut instinct tells me that they aren't, though.

Can’t tell from the pictures but look on the barrel , should tell you who the manufacturer is. I can however confirm they are A2 By the rear sight adjustment.

No markings on tops of Uppers, or BCGs. My gut says Colt would mark products Colt, others would leave blank. But that is my gut not knowlege.

3rd pic clearly shows the forge codes near the rear sight. Both are definitely Colt (with correct subcontractor forging codes to the right of the Colt 'C'.
These are correct for vintage A2 configurations and those with Colt markings such as these have become somewhat collectible and hard to find.
Nice!

It looks to me that one or maybe both are large hole uppers, if the front pivot pin hole is larger than the back one they are commercial uppers. Colt bolts should be marked with C MPI behind lugs and carriers marked on left side with a C, Colt barrels will be marked between front site post and muzzle with C MP 1/7 or 1/9.

No barrels, just uppers and BCGs. Neither has bigger hole in front. I buy the item not the story, but the story told by seller is he is small town gunsmith (well his sign does say this is true) and uppers came from Colt ARs belonging to local Sheriffs Department. He said he swapped five A-2 uppers out replacing them with flattop uppers and optics.
I will have to run a magnifying glass over BCGs and bolts when I get home tonite.

Nice looking uppers, you said there's no barrels, but it looks like the handguards are still there. If so are they the round or triangular ones? I've been thinking about doing an A2 build when I get out of NYS.

Trial fit, triangular A-2 rifle handguards, did not come with uppers. Would like to find enough parts to build them into retro A-2 rifles.
PS: I remember hiding the family in the trunk of our Trabant and escaping PRNY to "the west" through Czechoslovakia about 14 years ago...

Bingo!
'CAF' = Colt / Alcoa Forge
'CH' = Colt / Harvey Aluminum (1st Colt Forgings)
'CM' = Colt / Martin Marietta
'CMB' = Colt / Mueller Brass
'CK' = Colt / Kaiser Aluminum
There's a whole bunch more forge markings, but these are the ones for Colt.
