Default H&R .32 S&W

Hey guys, my grandpa has this revolver and I was trying to find out a little more about it.

What I know:
Harrington and Richardson Arms
Chambered in .32 S&W, 4" barrel
Patent Date Oct. 8 1890
Serial # 377 55 4 (butt of grips)

What I'd like to know is the approximate date of build and the value. Can someone help?

Pics:

Thanks!

Welcome to the Smith and Wesson Forum.
I'm no H&R expert but with a patent date of 1890 and a discontinued MFG date of 1896 I think we are in the ballpark.

These guns are refered to in the Blue Book as auto ejecting.
Value is not high depending on condition it might be worth $150.
I'm really not sure what the market will bear but that gives you a general idea.

Thanks. I didn't think it was worth too much.

IIRC the patent on this one was 1898? Unless I totally mis-read it...

This model was produced with only minor changes for a number of years. I cannot tell from the pictures if yours has the caliber marked on the side of the barrel. If it does it was made after 1908, if not it was made before then. There are some H&R people at firearms forum.com who could probably narrow it down a bit more.

Yes it does have it marked, 32 S&W CTGE in the barrel. That's great to know, I might check them out.

tops: I'm definitely not planning on selling it, I know there isn't much monetary value, and that's not the point. We're just curious if anyone can get close to the date, or a value, for potential insurance, and ****s and giggles.

My resources state that serial numbers 280001 to 580000 were manufactured from 1913 to 1937. Extrapolating the numbers a bit, I would think your H&R was probably made in the 1920's. Total of all production for H&R exceeded 600,000 pistols. There has not been a big collector following for these revolvers, so prices are quite low - probably $125 to $200 would be a ballpark guess.

It is certainly worth a lot more as an heirloom that can be passed down through the family.

A fellow named Jim Hauff who posts at The Ask the Pros & What's It Worth? Forum - TheFirearmsForum.Com is pretty knowledgeable on H&R stuff. You might ask over there.

The one I have is black powder, and its a .32 also but I can remember if it says .32 S&W I would think not.
