Check out Weatherby's new PA-459...18" pump, 5+1 with pistol grip with great sights. I bought it 6 months ago and it is my #1 "go-to" firearm for night time coverage. I placed Surefire's X300 weaponlight...lights up a tree line from 200'.
Just purchased Browning's new 24" pump, 4+1 in 10 gauge for heavy capability. Love it!

I have a M97 Winnie that has a 18+" barrel that sits in the corner, waiting. M97s have a 5 round magazine and the later versions have two little buttons on either side of the receiver. Squeeze those two buttons and the mag tube empties in about 1 second.
I keep mine loaded with three 00 buck shells and two slugs. As you can see, I have other rounds available as well, on the sling.

Another big green R fan. I thought about a tube extension, side saddle, and butt cuff, but then I thought it would be just as easy to store it with a few grab and go boxes next to it and just keep it nimble, quick, and deadly if ever needed.

My daughter's boyfriend has one of these, without the laser sight and tac light. He let me try it, and I love it. He will not sell it to me, so it looks like I will be buying one for myself.

There certainly is a reason that 870's are so popular.
Pop started me out with a 16ga.870 quail hunting when I was 11 years old.By the time I was 13 I could get three birds on covey rise about every time.Smooth as silk action.
The days though,I like the Mossberg 590A1 SPX as a shotgun for spooky events.

I have a Pardner Pump 12 ga, which is 18.5 inches and a little modified with Rem 870 items.
Then there is the Stevens. It is a double barrel 12 ga, cut to 18.5 inches, and dressed up a little. Rail on the top, rail underneath, and a new site. May look a little strange, but it shoots great. Just something different. My neighbor calls it the "tactical double barrel".lol

Can’t go wrong with an 870, other than I can think of no human (bears are different) self defense scenario that I wouldn’t rather have an AR-15 with Aimpoint Red Dot sight and Surefire white light.

We usually shoot in the woods up north because the trap and sporting clays crowd at the gun club look at me funny when I bring it out to the firing line.
You are right, it's a blast to shoot (no pun intended)...

I have a 590 with 20" barrel but this would be my pick....everything you need, nothing you don't. Second would be the Stoeger coach gun...that design allows for an even shorter gun....less is more with a home shotgun IMO...

I have a Mossberg 500 with an 18" cylinder bore barrel, and it has been my HD shotgun for about 25-30 years. Always reliable, does the job. I also have a 28" Mod barrel for it, put it on a couple of weeks to loan to a friend's son when we went quail hunting. I do have a pistol grip for it, but have never installed it. The only reason I can see for it is to make the shotgun concealable under a coat, which I don't really intend to do (although I did design a shoulder rig to carry it on my right side and one of my 500s on the left). The pistol grip, IMHO, is somewhat less controllable, and completely eliminates the possibility of delivering a buttstroke to the head in close combat. My choice of load is #4 Buck, plenty of oomph from each pellet, but a much higher pellet count for each round.
Regarding a few comments in earlier posts about preferring an AR-15 for H-D, I can't agree. I've used M-16s, as well as rifles in real calibers, and shotguns, in combat, and, based on my experience, I much prefer the shotgun as a home defense weapon, and rifles in calibers beginning with 3 for use as general battle rifles. A clue to the regard I have for the AR-15/M-16 platform is the fact that I don't own even one, out of the many rifles I own, and I have no plans to purchase one. YMMV.

Picture is from an old bbq gun thread. An 870, a Winchester Riot (if memory serves it's mod 1100) and a Mossberg Marine.

This should do the trick with light recoil rounds ... AOW for the price of a $5 tax stamp. Lots of fun to shoot!

I found a used 12 guage 870 in 80-85% condition at a pawn shop cheap. I cut the barrel to 18" and added a +2 magazine extension. It works good, was cheap, and has been beside by bed for years. To me anything more is overkill.

Seriously? I thought it was a couple hundred bucks. How does one get a tax stamp?

Doublesharp, is that wood on your 870 factory? If not, where did you come by it?

Anyone ever try the police turn ins that are seen in gun shops from time to time. I'm thinking carried alot, shot a little. For home defense I don't care what they look like.

I'm pretty sure it is factory wood but I bought it from a forum member several years ago just like it is.

I picked up a maverick shotgun for $159 many years ago at kamart its a 12ga pump with a 28'' mod barrel. I just ordered the 18 1/2'' barrel for it and i have an awesome homeland protection now. I see there only $230 new now and i'm thinking of getting one for each son too for there homes too.
