Need Info. On Colt SAA
A buddy at work has a blued Colt SAA with 4 5/8" barrel Ser# 230xxx in .38 WCF. He asked me to find as much info. on it as I can, so I figured I'd ask here. Based on my research so far, it fires the .38/40 cartridge and was manufactured around 1903?
All three serial #'s match. The markings are a little light, so I'm assuming it it's been re-blued (finish is about 95%). Mechanically it seems excellent. The grips are aftermarket Franzite plastic. The tip of the firing pin was grounded down to make it non-firing.
Any rough guess on the value? It has very light surface rust in areas that I was going to remove. Is this advisable? What about cleaning the bore?
Also, I'm assuming this should only shoot black powder loads and probably wouldn't be safe with modern SASS smokless loads?
Thanks for the info.

Well , many CASS shooters use First Generation Colt SAAs that are in good condition with black powder and 'cowboy' level loads.
Even in the condition you describe , it would still have substantial value. Might even be a candidate for a Doug Turnbull restoration.
Turnbull Mfg. Co. for firearm restoration of antique guns - antique revolvers, antique pistols - including 1886 Winchester rifles, Marlin rifles, Parker shotguns, Colt revolvers, and more
An email with pics and description to them might provide answers.

Removing surface rust is OK, but don't overclean. If it was mfg. in 1903 it's safe for smokeless powder loads, it'll shoot the lightly loaded "cowboy" ammo forever.

Yeah. It's a 1903 SAA. But the 38-40 was the Magnum of it's day. Nice old Colt, leave it alone. Even re finished it's a keeper.

Tried over there, but got no love.
Based on my GB searches, I'm guessing it's worth $1200 to $1700 being refinished and aftermarket grips.

I have a 32 wcf, same vintage and reworked too. I just went over there and added a comment hopefully bumping it to the top.
There are several expert guru,s over there maybe one will answer. That site is a lot less active than this one. Good luck.
