New Altamont Blackwood Altai Target Grips.
Hudson River Valley Customs did Urban Camo texture and stipple.
I like the getting all 3 fingers on and no finger grooves.

Picked up a set of Rink target stocks for my Hammerli 208. These actually fit my hand (the factory stocks did not), so looking forward to see if it makes a difference downrange...

I haven't added to my herd in a few months (no wait, seriously, it might have only been a few months). But did just help a buddy out who's shutting down his ffl. I picked up a bunch of ammo and a few odds and ends at a great price.
Plan is to sell off some of the stuff I don't shoot and turn the $ into something I will; or throw the cash back into the bank.

Rodan , Many years ago a MANY times PPC National Champion and later the National Bullseye Champion told me if you shoot a perfect score with no Xs, no one will ever beat you. Dont worry about Xs.
I know the frustration of older eyes and not as steady hands also, so hang in there...

I ordered a Desantis Nemesis Pocket Holster for my Ruger LCP. I've been carrying it since 2018 in the holster ii came packaged with, but it has gotten extremely ratty over the past 4 years, so I decided it was time to get a replacement holster.

Found a S&W 617 on another site for $750. I jumped at it. I've been looking for a 4 inch for a couple of years and they've always been over a grand.
I was on it 20 minutes after it was posted. Came with 5 DS-10 speed loaders and a loading block. That brings me up to 23 loaders. I can almost get through a Steel Challenge without reloading the moons.
I'm going to put a Fast Fire II on it with a 3 minute dot. I normally shoot C-Mores with 12 MOA so I'm hoping this works and doesn't get washed out in the bright sunlight.
I get to pick it up Friday and test fire it. Hope it's got a nice trigger. If it's smooth I'll just leave it alone and replace springs.

PSA had a sale on their newer Dagger 9mm complete slides, optic ready. Couldn't beat the price. Also ordered a recoil spring. Although they didn't list it as Gen 2 compatible it seems to fit my Gen 2 G23 frame just fine. It seems well made. I already had a Storm Lake barrel laying around and some PMag Glock 19 mags so I'm good to go. However I haven't shot it yet. I need to mow the lawn first otherwise I'll never find any of the brass. Maybe tomorrow. So now my Gen 2 23 is an optic ready 19. I like 40 just fine but 9 is easier to find and cheaper.

Went to the local auction today, came home with a 6.5” Model 624 and a .22 Combat Masterpiece. The 624 came with the box, paperwork and tools. I now have all three barrel lengths of the 624.

I bailed my .40 Beretta PX4 out of jail yesterday.
In a stroke of absolute genius, I sold my only .40 pistol off a while ago, in spite of the fact I have a couple thousand rounds of ammo.
I found the rotating barrel design intriguing, and had been on the lookout for one.
LGS offered one up in perfect condition with the box and docs and backstraps, and now it’s mine.

LNIB no lock 442 Pro Series, went right to the range to put 100 + rounds of standard pressure & +P through it. Sweetest shooting J Frame I’ve ever handled.

The other day I preordered a new and improved version of the Schrade Delta Class SCHF27 Extreme Survival Knife.
Today I took advantage of a sale and ordered two Buck Knives, a 110 Slim Select with a Red FRN handle as well as a 284 Bantam BBW knife with a Muddy Girl Camo GRN handle as a future birthday gift for my mother.
What can I say? I like cheap knives.

I got a LNIB 442 Pro Series a few months ago for a really good price. I don’t think it had ever been shot outside of the factory. It’s a really nice revolver, I was very pleased. Really nice trigger. My old partner really liked it too, he bought it from me a few weeks ago for what I paid for it.

I picked up a Weatherby Vanguard Camilla in 7mm-08 for my daughter. She's finally embracing the country girl life and wants to hunt deer and elk. Gently used, came with a Nikon 4-12x and a bundle of ammo.
Sorry to burst the bubble of some of the old salts, but there's a new golden age of hunting rifles. Sure, those Win pre-64s, Savage 99s, etc are excellent guns. Except they're hard to find and often in obsolete calibers. I'm loathe to consider the cheaper rifles from the mid 60s through the early 2000s as these seem to be the worst years all around. The Japanese made Weatherbys, Howas, and Winchesters might lack the same craftsmanship as those oldies but are great guns, along with the new Brownings, Tikkas, Bergaras, Kimbers, Savages, etc.

My latest is also my first "celebrity" gun purchase - from James Earl Jones.
IMG_0495.jpg
Western Field brand of the Iver Johnson Model 57 with a "Sealed Eight" cylinder.
Not exactly high end. But old fashioned blued steel and walnut.

Many years ago, I worked for a large gun shop. One day I answered the phone and the person on the other end asked to speak with the owner, by name. I asked for the caller's name and he identified himself as James Earl Jones. I thought it was a joke, but asked a long time employee and they confirmed that Mr. Jones, although out-of-state, was a regular customer. I put the call on hold and the owner picked it up. You could have knocked me over with a feather!

Bought in an auction last night...picked up today 1st lot was a complete Dillon SDB with all parts and a couple cal conversions for the 550. Some lots of powder...all sealed except more than 3/4 lb of Win 748...all at the price of 10.00 a pound. 30 lb though Also got another lot that I paid a bit much for...it included one of the Lyman Black Powder measures also complete. Lyman powder scale Rcbs Powder measure..a case trimmer and the best of it was a Star Sizer/Luber with 41 sizing die. Don't see them that often and I buy the ones that are reasonable. In the box unseen was a Star catalogue/instruction pamphlet.. Also in the box was a RCBS Size a matic sizer. Little rough but good useable

I bought a model 43 single stack Glock. Was wanting something to carry that I wouldn't cry if I lost it. Really it doesn't feel too bad, I haven't shot it yet.

This Tisas 9mm 1911A1 clone. One of the "Blems" that Centerfire has been selling for $319 shipped and no taxes. Ridiculously good deal. They also had them in .45 when i grabbed this one.

My favorite style 1911. Does the job without a lot of nonsense. And looks good doing it.

Picked up a Sig 716i Tread. My first 7.62 AR. Added an Athlon Ares ETR 1-10x24 and it made its first range trip this morning.
I would have preferred a 3-18x-ish optic, but I've been tasked with developing policy and training for a new .308 'enhanced patrol rifle' program for my agency, and the parameters are for an LPVO with 8-10x as max magnification.
I only had some 150gr Win white box M80, and wasn't super impressed with the results, but I had no issues ringing steel out to 250 (the limit of our range). The 8lb trigger wasn't helping things...
Tossed my Nomad L on for most of the shooting after zeroing.
Gonna take it out to a training next week and spend some more time with it. Need to see how it shoots with our issue .308, and run it through some dynamic drills.

Bought this S&W M&P9 2.0 5" FDE 2 weeks ago with a total of four 17-round magazines & received the "JustHolsterIt" IWB in the mail on Friday. I ordered the holster with a "claw" for AIWB, but it was too long to wear that way. Worn at 3:30, this is my new EDC.
Sent with some arcane communications device.

My new Sig P322. I haven't had a chance to range test it and sight it in; only disassembled and cleaned it. Typical Sig 320 like trigger pull of 4 1/2 lbs.

Picked up a WW2 1944 K98 German bayonet. The serial numbers match, and the bayonet is not sharpened and retains ~80% of the factory bluing. The scabbard has been cleaned to prevent any further surface rusting.

I finally got some original ammunition for my S&W Model of 1917.
The box contains 24 rounds of .45 ACP in half-moon clips, packaged June 28, 1917....
IMG_2965.jpg
I am not opening the box, but inside it should look like this:
IMG_6587.jpg
This stuff is no longer easy to obtain!

There’s nothing wrong with an 8x-10x max optic - with a couple thoughts and caveats:
- despite the rankings of the long range precision shooter wannabe/fanboy crowd 1x of magnification per 100 yards is enough for precision shooting;
- way too many shooters over magnify their rifles in a mistaken belief that magnification creates greater resolution, but that’s not the case;
- objective lens diameter and lens quality are what produce greater resolution;
- produced to the same quality the price increase for a large objective isn’t linear, it’s exponential, as larger objective lenses cost a lot more to produce to the the same level of quality than smaller objective lenses;
- exit pupil also matters, especially in low light conditions. For example in low light (pre-dawn, dusk, or heavy overcast) conditions the average pupil is about 4 mm in diameter and unless the exit pupil of the scope can match that, the image will be dim and grainy. A target shooter shooting at high contrast black on white or buff targets can live with that. A shooter in the field shooting at small and/or low contrast targets, often in deep shadow or against dappled backgrounds cannot. You can’t hit what you can’t see.
Consequently:
- a shooter with a 4-14x56 scope will have a full 4mm exit pupil at 14x and can use all of the magnification under most conditions;
- a shooter with a 5-25x56 scope only has a 2.8mm exit pupil and can only use that full magnification on sunny days;
- a shooter with a 4-20x50mm scope has a 2.5mm exit pupil and so also restricted to bright sunny days to use 20x;
- a shooter with a 7-35x56 has just a 1.6mm exit pupil and is only going to get a bright, sharp image on the clearest brightest days with the sun high in the sky.
- in the above examples the maximum usable magnification is going to be 14x for all of the 56mm scopes and 12.5x for the 50mm scope;
- shooters aggravate the exit pupil/magnification issue with first focal plane scopes as they have to back off the magnification to get a bright, sharp image and in the process the reticle size decreases. For the above scopes the reticle size at maximum usable low light magnification is 100%, 56%, 62%, and 40% respectively. In low light in real world conditions those 5-25x5mm and 7-35x56mm scopes don’t fare to well in terms of reticle size;
- unless shooters are actively using a first focal plane reticle to do hold offs over a wide range of magnifications, and or are doing reticle ranging over a wide range of magnifications, they are better served with a second focal plane scope. And you can stuff more quality in a second focal plane scope dollar for dollar than a first focal plane scope.
- most shooters really don’t understand the compromises they are making in scope selection.
—-
With a 1-10x24 scope you’re still in that exit pupil limited range at 10x and the maximum low light magnification will be 6x. That’s not necessarily bad and will still give you a 600 yard effective range, but it is a compromise made for the compact size and light weight of a 24mm scope.
A 3-10x42mm scope might be a much better compromise. You get 10x and you get the full 10x in low light.
The slightly larger 4.2mm exit pupil at 10x helps reduce eye strain at in bright light where your pupil is only in the 2.0-2.5mm range the extra room for your eye to wander around in the eye box makes it much more comfortable for extended observation. Backing off to 7x will give you a luxurious 6mm to wander around in, and you can quickly crank it back to 10x if you see something interesting.
10x also gives you a 1000 yard effective range, which is frankly out past the 600 yards where a target round like M852 is effective, the 800 yards where the 168 gr SMK is effective in a max velocity load, and it’s at the limit of the 175 gr SMK M118LR’s capabilities.

Went to pick up some consignment $$$ at the LGS, and didn't even make it out the door with it. I swear it's a conspiracy...
Conspiracy or not, I'd been looking for a nice, older .22lr lever gun and this BL-22 was too nice to pass up.

A week ago I stopped by one of my favorite shops during a lunch break. Oh my, for this 1911 addict what do I see? A used but in excellent condition Springfield Ronin in 9mm. I had one when they first came out and don't remember why I sold it lol-maybe to get the commander version.
Regardless, had to grab it, got a very good price-just the gun and 3 mags, no bag/box etc. I'm not complaining it's a total joy at the range-low recoil, reliable and very accurate.

I ordered a pair of Pachmayr Emerald Pearl 1911 Grips as a gift for my brother's upcoming birthday.
Frankly, I just don't think his 1911 is quite loud and flashy enough yet...

Those Grips I ordered have arrived!
They're pretty swell, I have to say. I did some research after ordering them and assuming what I've read is accurate, these grips were released in 2019 with an MSRP of $99.99, but apparently they weren't very big sellers, (too flashy, I presume...) and I have read a few reports of the medallions coming out under recoil, (that's what Gorilla Glue is for) so they've since been discontinued and heavily discounted. I paid $23.49 for them, so that's over 75% Off the MSRP!
Oddly enough, Pachmayr went on to release a second variation of these grips in 2021, same price, but with a bit of a different look, (no medallions) and made in Denmark. (The ones I bought were made in the USA.)
I would have unpacked them to get some better pics, but seeing as they're intended as a gift, I'd rather leave them in the packaging. Assuming my brother likes them, (which I'm fairly certain he will) I'm sure he'll put them on his 1911 immediately and send me some pics, so you'll get to see them next month, most likely.

I took advantage of the MA Tax Free Weekend to buy a Real Avid Smart Bench Block and a Barska BARSKA 3-9x42.
The scope is nice because of the clear optics, but more so because of the long eye relief. It will go on the aftermarket handguard of my commercial M1 Carbine.
My old eyes are reliant for some sort of optics for long gun shooting.
