Almost three years ago, I purchased what I thought was a 4" nickel Python made in 1973. At the time, I considered a 4" nickel Python to be a grail gun. As luck would have it, the revolver was originally a 4" blue steel model. I sent it back to Colt last year for a refinish, and had it returned to its original blue.

Today, I stopped in a local shop, just to do a bit of browsing. In the bottom of the display case sat a 4" nickel Python. It looked to be a decent revolver, and I looked at it very closely, not wanting to commit very quickly. I pulled out my RL Wilson reference, and it stated serial number E54XXX was made in 1973. Wow, the same year as the first one. It was on consignment, and there was no wiggle room. The dealer called the seller, but he stated it was firm at $1,399. Oh, well. Not a steal, but not bad. It has the box, but no papers, and it's numbered to the gun; the older two-piece box with red interior, plastic bag, and two sheets of S&W storage paper. Not a sign of rust, but it has a few small marks on it, and the stocks have a couple of minor chips in the bottom. A bit of Mothers Mag Polish and my trusty index finger, and a coat of Johnson's paste wax, and she cleaned up nicely.

The serial number of my blue steel model is E540xx, and came with second generation stocks. This model is serial number E545xx, and came with third generation stocks. Less than 450 numbers between them. Serendipity?

I like the Pythons and someday when i can make myself stop buying Smiths for a couple of months i'll get one. You have two beautiful examples and i'd be proud to own either one. Nice my friend !!

Nice Python's. I do like the Colt Python. When I could afford my first revolver age 19. The price tag on a nice blue 6 inch Python was 1800 guilders. That was for me to much. I bought a very nice Smith and Wesson model 19 instead for 750 guilders.
At the moment I do own a Python made in 1961. I treassure this nice revolver. Have fun with your Python's.

That's not a bad price nowadays (unfortunately!!). Nice pair of "off brands" ya got there!!!! I still kick myself for not buying a 4 inch blue python for $500 back in the mid 90's......

As much as I love my S&W's, I gotta tell you, I'd dearly love to find a Python half as nice as those. I'd shoot the heck out of it. You're a lucky man.

very nice indeed...i added to my small python collection recently with a 4"blue from 1969...it is a fine shooting piece and condition is outstanding

Very nice and congratulations to you for returning the first one back to it's original blued state.

I have these two. They both look close to new yet but dont show it on the picture as I am not into waxing etc. The 2 1/2" nickle I bought new in 1970 for $165! It was a half price sale I wrote about before. The blue is 1979. I bought it used in the 80s for $407.36. I belive it was either unfired or next to it. For no good reason I can think of, I have only took it out about 4 times. I have the original grips and extras for both.

They both look great! Does the factory reblue look as nice up close as it appears in the picture? Can you tell much difference from an older original finish Python?

My only comparison has been to my 1978 Python. The finish looks somewhat darker and a bit deeper, although not a lot. There may well be some oxidation on the 1978's finish. Both revolvers have supremely well-finished metal.

Here's a photo of all three together. The 1973 blue had the "rollmarks" laser-cut, since the roll dies are long gone. The cuts appear to be deeper.
