Default Want Info about GSG 22 1911 pistol

Hi Gang,
Does anyone have or had the GSG 22 1911 pistol? If so can you share with me your experiences...good and bad? How accurate and reliable was it? Did you modify it in anyway? I would really appreciate any info provided.

I LOVE mine!

Reliable with most bulk pack ammo, even std velocity. Accurate enough for what it is, and better sights can easily be added. Best of all it feels just like my SA 1911 .45.

Best $275 I've spent in some time.

I love the heck out of mine! 100 % reliable with all that I've feed it and just thrives on CCI Blazer bulk pack. Accurate, reliable and looks great, what's not to love? I probably have 1500 rounds through mine.

Mine is branded as a SIG1911-22. Pretty much the same gun with nicer grips. I've had mine for 6 + months and have had no problems with it. I shoot Federal Value Pack exclusively and rarely have a malfunction.

On a good day I can manage to keep most shots in a standard 50' pistol targets black scoring rings at 30'.

As a matter of fact it went to the range with me today and I put about 70 rounds through it.

I'm glad I bought it and use it often.

I think it's a good value, I bought mine as a training tool so I can teach sweet little old ladies to shoot, and they all seem to like it a lot. It doesn't weight much, it doesn't kick (like a 45) and I have yet to find any 22 ammo it doesn't like. It only comes with one magazine, and I'm betting getting more will be pricey, I haven't looked yet.

According to the book that came with it, 80% of the parts (the lower half) are interchangeable with other 1911's, a friend of mine put in a match sear from a Gold Cup and it worked fine. It takes very little strength to work the slide, thanks to the alloy slide and minimal recoil spring. Takedown is different but not tricky. Buy it!

I have a GSG 1911-22 and really enjoy it. It is very accurate and a great 1911 trainer. I shoot Fed bulk pack and occasionally get a failure to feed, unfortunately that is the norm with most 22 semiautos. A shot of Remoil in the action and staying on top of magazine spring life takes care of this.

I have replaced the mainspring housing for a flat one, changed the thumb safety, and modified the front sight for elevation. My trigger is good and needed no work. I have probably 3000 rounds through the gun and it's going strong, though I need to replace the recoil spring and washer soon.

It's an excellent gun for the money and probably one of the better 22 pistols out there.

I agree with the above statements, gun is a a ton of fun to shoot, trigger is decent, and fairly accurate. I bought the version that comes with a fake supressor and if the government ever gets real about supressors I would like to add one to the gun. I refuse to pay $200 for the license though.

I think they represent a pretty good value. Sold ALOT of them at the LGS where I worked until recently.

We have 4 of them at a small firm I instruct with. Of the 4, one is a bit ammo finicky, but the others are fine with almost any bulk ammo.
No, they are not 'super-accurate', but are great plinking/informal target shooting fun guns.

I was too impatient for them to come out and ended up getting a dedicated Kimber .22 RF Target model. Good pistol, but overpriced. I did not want a conversion, because that would end up taking a .45 out of service until switched back.

Interestingly, I noted that the GSG's have a steel insert at the slide's breechface. The Kimber does not. After several thousand rounds, the breechface on my Kimber became peened out of round so badly that it began to malfunction.
Had to send it back to Kimber and they replaced the slide. Was told by Kimber folks that they'd 'never heard of that happening'. Kinda hard to believe.
I mentioned the design feature of the insert on the GSG to Kimber by phone and the letter I sent with the gun. No reply to that point whatsoever.

In short - yes, the GSG's are good guns for the money.

Anybody know how many different MANUFACTURES NAMES are on these 1911-22's, such as Sig Sauer, GSG ?

GSG is German Sport Guns. They make all sorts of .22 replicas, including a .22LR STG-44. GSG make the SIG 1911-22.

UMAREX import a Walther (aren't they S&W?) made Colt licensed 1922 .22LR also. A completely different gun.

Had both. Kept the UMAREX as its a bit better shooter and more like a 1911, FWIW:

Yes I have one and have probaly sold many, by letting other shooters try it.
Put ~ 5000 rounds through it. It just keeps getting beter. At first it did not like any ammo but CCI mini-mags. After a few ~ 1000 it started shooting anything. I bought three extra mags, they are expensive to me ~$35.00 each. They are easy to load, and well made in Germany.

With factory sights not adjusted, mine shoots slightly high and to the left. You can drift the rear, and replace the fronts with two different blades. I should probably do this, but knowing where it hits, I have no problem wearing out a 3" circle at 10 yards.
Shot the other day a 50 yards, sitting, using a rest. Could hit a 9" steel dish all day long.

Looking at fit and finish it is great. Looking at other 1911's it is up there with Colt/Kimber in looks.
I know I can add all kinda things to it. Most any 1911 add on will work with it. But I like it as is.

I get by with cleaning it ~ 500 rounds. After you get used to it it breaks down pretty easy.I recommnd it highly.

Sig sells the same gun. It is made by GSG, at about ~ $100.00more.
Colt sells a 1911 .22lr also. Good shooter but looks like junk.
Plus more for the Colt name.

The GSG 1911 is the best pistol I have bought in years.

I have one and generally I like it. I have about 300 rounds though it so far and have had a few failures to feed the 2nd round out of the mag that I attribute to not being careful enough when loading the magazine. If you try and pull the mag follower button down too far it's easy to get one of the rims overlapping the other, the solution is pull it down just far enough to load one round at a time. I replaced the ambi safety with a standard Colt manufactured thumb safety and it dropped right in. I don't care for the plastic sights, I wish someone would offer direct replacements made of anodized aluminum for a reasonable price. The finish on the frame appears to be Parkerizing and it's pretty tough. The finish on the slide is ****. It's chipping around the slide stop notch and at the rear of the ejection port from shells hitting it upon ejecting. I removed the paint on that surface and touched it up with Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black which did the trick. The finish on the end of the barrel was chipping off from rubbing on the bushing so I polished the last 2" of it bright which solved that problem. I also masked off the hideous safety warning which appears to be laser etched on the frame and took a cotton swab dipped in Aluminum Black and then blotted almost dry before dabbing the lettering with it so any excess wouldn't run under the masking tape and discolor the surround area.
As soon as I saw the lettering change color I wiped dry and it did a pretty credible of hiding the insulting warning text. A lot of owners are stripping the slides bare and refinishing with one of the bake on coatings from Brownell's with good results. Too bad the manufacturer didn't use a more durable finish. It's a fun shooter.

I've put several thousand rounds down the pipe of mine. It shoots good, looks, good, and is a lot of fun.

It isn't a Colt. It isn't a target pistol. For about $300, it represents a pretty good value in my opinion. It is a great practice tool for those trying to master the 1911 without breaking the bank for ammo.
