Should I swap my M&P for a Ruger?
Hey, guys.
I have a question for you. I'm posting here instead of the M&P section because I wanted less-biased opinions.
In March of this year, I bought a used M&P40 full size. I paid high book for it lightly used - $479. I have added Trijicon night sights & APEX trigger upgrades.
After 1000 +/- rounds, I have come to realize I'm not crazy about the gun. I'm not too much into semi-auto, but figured I'd give it a whirl. I've always liked revolvers, and a 1911 does nothing for me.
Anyway, I'm thinking of selling it. I've asked around, and been told I could get anywhere between $410 - $550 for it, and an LGS offered me $289 for a trade (for $289 I'd feed it through a wood chipper).
I've got a guy that wants to trade for it.
Here's his offer:
He has an older blued Ruger GP100 6" that he bought new (box & papers to verify). I've handled the gun and it is smooth and action is tight, some wear but zero abuse.
I like his gun and it's in very nice shape.
He said if he were to sell it, he'd ask $450, and wouldn't let it go for a nickel less than $425, which seems like a very nice price.
I've seen used GP100's go for $399 for one badly scratched & abused, to $579 in good shape.
He's offering a gun-for-gun swap, plus $150 cash in my pocket. Considering his asking price and cash offer, I'm looking at the equivalent of $575 for my M&P.
If I could find a buyer that wanted my M&P for $575, I'd sell it in a heartbeat, because I'm realistic enough to know I won't get a lot for the upgrades I put on.
Everything I've read and heard about the GP100 says it's a good, sturdy revolver.
All Ruger slamming aside, what do you think?
Sorry for the long post.
Thanks for any insight.
Hillbilly

You have a gun you don't like and want to trade for a gun you do like? If he is a real friend I'd go even across. If he's a friend that you would not trust your wife going out of town with for a business conference, than it's a great deal to get the extra $150. Joe

I'm sorry, let me clarify - I don't know this guy. He contacted me via a PM on another forum, it just turns out that he lives fairly close to me, around a 20 min. drive.
I've met him and he seems decent, but I don't KNOW him.

Still a good deal. Check your local laws, I'm originally from NJ and I know you can't just swap guns without a 4 part form and various hops, hoops, dog and pony tricks. Joe

We both have the required state pistol licensing. All we'd have to do is report the swap to our respective counties' licensing offices.

If you don't care for the M&P, trade it away. The GP100 is a great gun. It's a good trade.

The GP100, like other Ruger revolvers, is built like a tank. It should hold up well...and if not, even though you aren't the original owner, Ruger has been known to take care of problems even on older, second hand guns.
As others have said, it's sounds like a good trade. It's not one I would make, because I prefer semi-autos to revolvers. It also sounds like you are getting a good deal money-wise...which, BTW, I would take since he is offering it. With your upgrades, I think you are giving him a fair deal as well.
If you both end up happy, then it's a good deal.

I agree, if you would rather have a revolver, it is a good trade with the extra cash.

In my opinion the M&P is one of the better pistols around, but if you don't like it it is worthless to you since revolvers are your thing. So are you bragging on your deal? It's a no brainer.

These answers are why I love this forum!
None of the "brand nazis" or "Smith police", etc. or whatever you'd like to call it. No insults, so forth.
Just honest assessments of a potential gun swap from fellow gun lovers.
After all these answers, I think I'll call the guy and proceed with the deal.
Thanks & "likes" to everybody!
P.S. I own a fairly nice 586 no-dash 6" and I think the Ruger will be a "knock-around" gun that if I ding it here or there I'll be a little bummed but not broken-hearted.
I'll make the trade, that is, unless anybody would like to extend the same offer as the other guy with their 586? Trade for my M&P and pay me $150? Anybody?
No?
Didn't think so. Lol.

If you don't like the gun, trade it for one you do. The GP100 is a freakin tank of a revolver.
While they aint the prettiest guns to most, I love them. I frequently carry a SP-101 in the summer months when I sweat more (so as to not rust the finish on my Colt DS), and the SP-101 is my gun nearest the front door.
I love my S&W L frame, so that's my jacket carry gun, but I'd have no problem switching it with a GP100 if I had to.

I would give the GP a cursory check to make sure someone hasn't tried to .357 +P with it and allow him the same courtesy with your M&P. If you are both happy then I would take his money and swap guns.
Just because I have M&Pitis doesn't mean I think everyone should. I just took my blued steel GP100 to the range last weekend and the stainless GP100 will go next weekend. They may be a bit bulkier than a 586/686 but I love them.

Thanks to everybody for their answers & opinions.
I contacted the guy, and we're going to make the deal.
There was even a hiccup - the striker block on my M&P was inop. Luckily I paid for a used-gun warranty when I bought it, so it's going back to S&W for repair on Gander Mountain's dime. I told the guy, and he didn't mind waiting, so when it comes back repaired, we are going to proceed with our deal.
Thanks again to everybody.
P.S.
Thanks to the Moderators too, for letting my thread stay in The Lounge and not moving it to the M&P section.
