Anyone recommend a red dot to mount on a 12ga magnum shotgun, besides a eotech?

Looking for something that has a large sight picture and can take the recoil.

The Eotech 517 or Aimpoint PRO are both in the $400 range, and are rugged, capable sighting systems. I have an Eotech EXS2, which is smaller and uses a Surefire 123 battery. I also have the Aimpoint PRO, and would generally recommend the latter. The PRO can be left on for three years continuously (5000+ hours), whereas the Eotech has about 1/10th the battery life, and goes off automatically after 4 hours. Mine are on rifles, but a shotgun would be no challenge, with an XS rail or something comparable.

For about $225, there is the Burris Fastfire III, which is somewhat harder to zero and has fewer features, but small and effective. It is small enough to mount on a pistol. It has an on/off switch, or can be turned off automatically with an opaque plastic hood, supplied with the unit. I have the Fastfire II, but the III has a battery changed from the top and click stops on the windage and elevation screws. The 4 MOA dot is clearly visible for quick target acquisition in all light levels. It is powered by a CR2032 button battery.

The Eotech and Aimpoint are submersible, so a rainy day on the hunt would not be a challenge. The Burris is weather resistant, but I wouldn't dunk it. I wouldn't trust anything cheaper to withstand the recoil or bad weather.

There's an article about a new shotgun-specific sight in the new Guns & Ammo, it looks interesting.

Got home and looked in the magazine; it's called Redring", fits on the rib of most shotguns, and is transferrable from one to another. redringsight.com.

Aimpoint. I am pretty sure Larue makes a mount for that purpose, and that combination really is the default for quality and reliability.

There is a huge trend in the turkey hunting world these days to put open lens reflex sights on shotguns. Of these, the Burris is probably leading the way. The Burris Fast Fire 1, 2 and 3 require a base. The Speed Bead is the same sight but with a mount that attaches between the stock and receiver on specific model shotguns. The Speed Bead allows for lower mounting. The Fast Fire can be mounted on a Picatinny or Weaver base, or can be mounted on various gun specific mounts. One popular mount is th take a Burris Marlin 336 base which actually fits the receiver profile of many shotguns, and getting a smith to drill and tap the gun for it. This makes a very clean looking install.

Would recommend another manufacturer to look at is Ultradot, and I believe their LT model might be one that would work for your shotgun. Backed by lifetime warranty.

I also agree with novalty on the UltraDot L/T. I have one on a 686 and love it. It is a bit bigger than the Burris with a bit bigger sight window. It must be mounted on a rail though. It would make an excellent shotgun sight.

OK then, you may want to consider what I have on my turkey guns. They are made by Tru-Glo, come in camo or black, have multiple selectable reticles, can select green or red reticle color, and have a lifetime warranty. They have held up to 3.5" 12 ga turkey loads for me for 5 years with no problems. And they are around $100.

I would highly suggest the Bushnell TRS25. I have them on two of my shotguns with thousands of rounds through them and got them online for 79 dollars and free shipping. They have great battery life and i know many others that use them on everything they own and have nothing but great reviews.
