It is rusty, but it was a sniper rifle.

OH THE HORROR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :eek
I'd get some brass wool and oil then go very easy on it .
It looks to be a original to me so it still should have some value. Are you going to sell it ??????
I'd love to add one to my WW II collection.

Some value? Actually quite a bit of value if it is an original and complete 03A4 and scope, even with some rust - that will clean up. And the stamped trigger guard/magazine assembly can be easily replaced, as it is the same as any other 03A3. Original sniper rifles are like gold.

The rifle pictured has considerable value, the bolt alone is valued around 250/300 dollars. The o3a4 trigger guard is different from a standard o3a3 and you should attempt to salvage it.o3a4 trigger guards have an additional metal pad in the front and are sought after by people doing restorations.1903A4`s are sought after because they are impossible to counterfit because of the off set lettering on the receiver.A barreled action can bring 1200.00 alone.Do not change parts and seek advice from a qualified collector before you do anything.

Is that stock correct for a sniper? That is a scant stock and my limited knowledge of 03 snipers suggests a C type with a full pistol grip is correct.

The pictures clearly show the stampings as Model 03-A3

How does that change values, my novice interest in these items is that snipers were A4?

If other parts are sniper A4 parts and a A3 receiver, is it a parts gun?

I always find it interesting to find items that were done before they were very collectable and had big value. They are either very original or built as someone wanted it to be with out care to the way it was or should have been. Kinda the I want it to be this way so I made it that way.

I think that the rifle is great and would be a fun project for who ever gets it.

Head over to the CMP forums. They are to '17s, O3's, Garands, and M1 Carbines, what this place is to S & W's. If it's Mil Surplus, there is someone there who can tell you everything about it.

And if that's an actually 1903A4 Sniper rifle from WWII, someone will offer you their first born for it. I know enough about those rifles to know a reproduction costs around 1K.

Regarding the stock,1903a4`s were issued with scant stocks, the C stock was usually associated with an upgrade/rebuild.Regarding the observation on the markings by wheelgun 28 the 03a3 markings are correct.I have observed rifles marked as such and a few with the 3 xed out and a 4 crudely stamped by the depot.Original 03a3 barrels were parkerized with the front sight already in place, when removed a burnished unparked area appears and would make the barrel suspect. On original barrels they were parkerized without the front sight and appear as such.On another note many 03a4 barrels were 2 grove. You may also check the front of the scope base for shims in the front of the base visible when the rifle is viewed from the underside.Shims were placed to center the scope cross wires since the m73b1/m8 (post)/330 series scopes did not have self centering crosshairs. All in all fascinating rifles that are true snipers used from WWII through the war in SE Asia. The CMP now has a successful vintage sniper match fired at 300 and 600 yards at camp perry. This has led to a renewed interest in these rifles. There are companies making clones of this rifle for competition.

This is an all original 03-A3 sniper serial number 3426826 and is correct according to Al Miller in Gun Digest 29th Anniversary 1975 Delux Edition. It does have clear optics and a butter smooth action. I am going to have one of the othe 03s restored by AP&W to hang on the wall, just because of what these rifles represent.

This link may help but it appears you now know you have an original rifle. If you look in the flaming bomb under the barrel date it should have a small punch mark in the bomb that further dictates an original barrel.Your barrel is correct for the serial number range.Congratulations on your find, truly fascinating piece of military history.A few years ago l had the opportunity to take one of my rifles and a M1D to the range with a korean war army vet who was a sniper in korea and a former student who was a marine scout sniper,a difference of 60 yrs but the commonalities they shared and the time we spent on the range that day were memorable.Enjoy your find.

Yep, it has all the key items. I cried when I got the pictures but I betcha that war horse has got something left to give. You also had a couple of pictures of 1903's and 1917. Please post some of those as well.
I have a 1903 A4 at home and it is a great shooter. The m73b1 scope Magnification leaves a lot to be desired!!
