Default Browning Hi Power..

Picked up a BHP today...1995 mfg.
Queen of the "Nines" for me anyway.
Likely will replace the stocks.

I like those stocks! Or at least I think I do. What are they? They look like they would be very comfortable. I am always curious about the new type hammer. Can you live with it? The new ones like the one on that gun are good for about two, maybe three, shots for me.

Great looking Hi-power. Congratulations.

For me, the BHP is one of the most naturally pointing handguns, and you sure got a nice one! Happy shooting!

I don't know why you would replace the stocks but if you do, Brownells sell French Walnut Browning stocks individually and they ain't cheap but sure are a nice dark OEM wood.

This is a right size double column 9mm, and nothing does the old cowboy spin on your fore finger like the Browning HP, carried cocked and locked, she is all that and a bag of chips. My interest in the HP stems from my Dad flying the MACVSOG, COIN gents in the MC-130E, Rivet Yard or Heavy Chain version of which their were 14 known and two "thin slice" sanitized airframes. Equipped with the Fulton Recovery System, Electronic Jamming, and the terrain following radar out of an F-4, my Dad noticed two full cases of "sanitized FN P-35s", picking one up the two Sog boys said, take a couple of those Major Maggart, we just use em and drop em an run like hhhh. My Dad wouldn't have dreamed of doing such a thing, he even turned in his Flight Jacket and tried to give back his watch, but they refused to take it. He later bought a Browning BDM for use on the farm dispatching rats, and associated vermin, that was his go to gun, when a discreet firearm might be needed. My Dad never talked about such things unless one of his Air Force buddies dropped by the farm, and then I would try to get as close as possible and hear the stories. The only thing he ever said to me, is one night after helping him round up some cattle, we were having a steak, and after supper, he reached around behind the center piece on the table and handed me Major John Plasters book on MACVSOG. He said, I want you to read this, its time you knew about what I did in Vietnam,, and this will give you a little taste. A few years ago, I picked one up from Robertson's in Tennessee, a 1968, its kinda a keepsake of my Dad, I bought to remind me of what a great patriot he was, as well as his honesty, that wouldn't allow him to take something that wasn't his. I just wish he had been around to handle my Browning, he would have enjoyed that. I hope you enjoy yours ex fuzz, I'm sure you earned it. Billy

I like mine with wraparound Pachs. They just feel good and the BHP is to me the best shooting 9 mm ever made.

I have two BHPs, one in 9mm and the other in .40S&W. For my money, they fit the hand better than any other pistol, period, and their low bore axis makes them very easy and comfortable to shoot.

John Browning and Dieudonné Saive were geniuses.

I like the M-35, and it's one of my son's favorites, too. He carried a MK III like yours while working in Iraq as a contractor and found it to be quite effective, even with NATO ball ammo.

My hands have never experienced hammer bite from either the old burr hammer or the current spur type, but I find the latter easier to thumb cock in a hurry.

I did once have a Hi-Power hammer jam on the sleeve of my parka when the recoiling slide caught it in the cuff. Took a lot of effort to get the gun clear, and I had to remove the coat. If that had happened in battle, I'd probably have been killed. I started carrying revolvers when in heavy winter coats.

Other than that, I like the gun, although one had an extractor that was too tightly fitted, I think. It'd ocasionally jam the gun.

I've had no jams from the CZ-75B or the Beretta M-92FS. But just a few in the Browning, mainly in that one with the tight (?) extactor. The CZ fits my hand as well or better than the Browning does, but both are outstanding.

Did you see Prince Harry yesterday in the news, coming home from Afghanistan? The news clips clearly showed his HP, on his right hip in a black open top holster. While seated in his attack helicopter, he also had a rifle. He told the media that he has killed a number of the Taliban, but didn't say with what. Probably, with the helo's armament. He sometimes flew to assist US troops, BTW.

Very nice gun! And what a wonderful photo! I wish that all pics on the Net were that sharp.

I just took my BHP to the range Monday. It's carried in a vehicle, and has a full mag in it, all the time, as well as one in the glovebox. These had not been emptied in a few years. It worked perfectly. every round cycled as it should. The magazines for these seem perfect. Mine has never had a FTF, feed or fire. There is no other auto I trust like the Hi-Power.

My Browning HP is hands down my favorite handgun. Belgium made, 1970 vintage, brand new. I picked it up before leaving home for the Marine Corps because 9MM ammo was always plentiful in the military environment (Royal Marines - Brits), I liked the higher shot count, reliability, accuracy and ergonomics of the Browning. I could not say the same about the 1911 (for me). Over the years I sent it back to the factory for refinishing, put some Craig Spegel grips on, and installed the Cylinder & Slide Sear/Hammer/spring package to reduce the trigger pull. The gun is nothing short of fantastic. Never had any issues with ammo, will eat any size or shape of my reloads and beg for more. Love to shoot it. Besides my own sentimentality attached to mine, I have to say the best handgun ever conceived (translation - I love this gun).

Great looking HP! I recently accquired a very nice one. One of my most sought after firearms. As I was building my family and coming up in my profession I could never afford one. On the birth of Grandbaby number thirteen the planets were in perfect alignment. It was worth the wait. Enjoy that fine HP. Here's mine.

Nice BHP and nice ones follow the original poster as well.

My BHP (1967?) shot about a 2 1/2 inch 5 shot group at 25 yards from a rest with the Berry 124 grain flatpoint and SR4756.

However I settled on Accurate #7 with the same bullet as it gave the same size group but dead on for windage.

Two days ago I fired 15 rounds of the Accurate #7 load from at rest at 25 yards and it grouped into 4 inches by 3 inches high and dead on for windage.

I love the fit and feel of my BHP. I do not care for the "thick-gripped" Wonder-Nines but the 13 round magazine and the BHP grip frame is perfect. It is indeed, as one poster said, a fine handling and pointing weapon. I would seriously love to find one that I could carry in the truck or in the woods. Mine is too pristine for that.

I carry and shoot an old Canadian Inglis HiPower often. It is great. If I plan on an extended shoot, I put a bandaid in the web between my thumb and trigger finger. It avoids the pinch. With the (legal) shoulder stock, it is a fun shooter.

It's funny how they dont bite everyone. I cannot shoot them without a No-Bite hammer. I have two, one is an unfired T series from 1967 so it's not modified, but my favorite {automatic} handgun is my Practical with a C&S No-Bite hammer. I shoot alot of cast bullets so it also has a Bar-Sto barrel. It goes without saying "nice find" because anytime you get lucky enough to pick up an HP it's a nice find. Congrats!!!!

I've owned a fair number of high capacity 9MM handguns over the years including S&W's, SIG's and a Glock. The only ones I still have are Browning High Power and CZ-75's. Flat out fantastic shooting pistols.

Over the years I have owned at least three or four Brownings, I traded or sold them to people I knew that had all shown an interest in them when out shooting. I swore the next one I got my hands on would stay with me til the end. This C-code pistol came into my hands a few years ago, I used a cylinder and slide mag disconnect and am very happy with the trigger now. Recently took it out with a few friends for some informal target practice, had offers to buy it that were substantially more than I paid, no dice...this one is my keeper.

Sir, nice catch. I've long wanted a good Hi-Power--I've shot several, but never actually owned one. It fits my hand far better than any other double-stack 9 mm.

It doesn't get much better than a FN HiPower;

Mine is from the late 40's or very early 50's. I've added a few hi cap mags since these pics were taken. It has PW import markings. I don't know where it served.....

nice!
I have two HP also - never see any of the younger kids shooting them.
Saemetric - those look like Esmerelda grips.

Richard Fletcher of Fletcher Custom Pistols does nice wotk on BHP, 1911 and Smiths. I had him do the triggers on both of mine bec the stock triggers felt soooo poor.

Here's my old Hi Power. I've had it longer than any of
my other guns. I used it for my CCW class & I still take
it to the range every now & then. y

Not a huge 9mm fan, but the BHP is the best of the 9's IMHO - GREAT GUN! But those green grips - - - I would look for a set of Factory and sell the green ones to Sip!

Before you trash those grips....pull them and look, I bet you will find they are made by Kim Ahrends. He doesnt make Hi Power grips any longer. As far as comfortable shooting grips, his win hands down!

Nice find and great gun. I had a BHP from 78 (Belgian made) adjustable sights and handloaded for it to see if it would knock the rams down at 100 meters and it did. Had to hit them just right. I sold it and have regretted it to this day. I have a fellow that wants to sell me a 86 BHP as we speak and I may take him up on it. There is something about the way they fit my hand that just feels better than any other.

per Sip: "They look like brothers..." Yeah, but you know the father of yours. As I recall you had the work on your HP done to your specs with a well-known smith. I found mine the way you see it. I know it's been through someone's shop - but have no idea which one. .. poor little orphan.

My current truck gun is a 67 T-series gun that lacks most of its finish. If it is the indicator of tuning, I can shoot one shot put my hat where the empty fell and finish the mag. All the rest of the brass will be in my hat when I am done.
