Ive been thinking about what it would require to make an AR style semi-automatic prototype that fires 7.62x54r. I have blueprints for the ar15 and ar10 lower receivers to compare and try to get an idea of what kind of dimensions it would require for the cartridge. What do you guys think? Also, do any of you know where I can get blueprints for the upper receivers? Any input is appreciated!

For informational purposes.... ;)

ive seen those they seem pretty cool. Ill have to see if I can get some specs and measurements. Id like to try and model it around an ar platform but id imagine something like the vepr would be less complicated

7.62x54R is a long round compared with 5.56 or even .308. I would say the AR-10 would have to be a starting point, dimensionally. IMHO the biggest issue is the large bolt head required by the rimmed ammo. 7.62x54R comes in a variety of flavours so an adjustable gas system might be a good idea too. What magazine would you use? Rimmed rounds pose a challenge.

yeah i was going to compare the ar15 and ar10 blueprints to see where they had to make the changes and then try to modify the ar10 prints to allow the 54r. Still trying to find prints for the upper receiver. Id imagine the main difference between the ar15 and ar10 lower is the accomodation on the larger mags , the larger differences being the upper and as you mentioned LVSteve the bcg. Piston system would probably be a good idea, especially for the dirtier surplus ammo.
