Special Colt Army Special
I spent the weekend at the Michigan Antique Arms Collectors show. I got to hang out with some friends, say hello to a number of Forum members and look for treasures.
This lovely Colt Army Special walked in on Saturday and made the rounds. It needed a good cleaning and polish, but the nickel is all there and the factory recessed medallion MOP's are flawless. The serial number dates it to 1927, the same year the model was re-named "Official Police". I'll be getting a letter, but I'm certain the grips are right - they simply fit too well not to be!
Some photos for your viewing pleasure.

No, I picked up the Heiser several years ago. I don't think the gun has ever been in a holster.

A likely story. All of us forum mortals know how you big time moderators and collectors get these treasures ... you hang out at the local gun buy backs and find unsuspecting little old ladies looking to trade for $50 and a couple grocery store vouchers. For shame, Chad.

So far, those are the nicest perfectly fitted set of pearls I can remember
seeing.
They appear to have no real flaws and proper thickness for the gun.
Pearls and nickle make each other look great, very fine treasure for sure.
Thanks for the pictures.
Enjoy
John

I think the Army Special is probably the Colt .38 that was carried by Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews on his famed Central Asiatic Expeditions for the Am. Museum of Nat. History in the 1920's. I've seen his in photos, but it was in an Audley holster. He wore the gun low on his right hip.
His was blue, and I think had walnut stocks. I believe his last expedition was in 1930, so he could have had an Official Police on that one, but it'd be an Army Special on the 1926 and earlier trips.
He used Savage 1920 and Mannlicher-Schoenaur rifles, but some expedition members had '03 Springfields and .45 autos. I suspect that they were just scientists who weren't too gun knowledgeable, so went with what the Army chose.
Those old Colts were beautifully made and finished. Judging from the photos, Andrews had a .38 with five or six-inch bbl. , I think the latter. If you can find any of his books, they're terrific. Some have good pics of him and others in Mongolia and elsewhere.

Thank you!
Patton would have mixed feeling. He'd like the nickel, but he wouldn't like the MOP's. Oh well... he was fired anyway!

Nope, not true.
I do have tables near the entrance to the show, but I earned them by spending six years as an elected Director of the club and the tables cost me $400 per year. I've been a life member for over thirty years. I was there Friday during set-up from 1pm to 5pm, Saturday from 8am to 5pm and Sunday from 8:30am to 3pm. None of it did me any good.
The seller came in Saturday with it and made the rounds. It was his fathers gun and he didn't want it.
He was on his way out when I saw him leaving with a gun case. I asked what he was carrying, looked at the gun, listened to his terms and got his phone number. I did some research Saturday evening after I got home, phoned him Sunday mid-morning from the show and purchased it on my way home. While I did get what I consider a great deal, I generously beat his best offer.
