Calling all SKS experts
Just kidding, not looking for only experts. I have a wooden case of the yellow Box 7.62 x 39mm ammo. It still has the metal band around the wooden case, so I have not opened it. I am not even sure how many rounds or boxes the case holds. I bought it in the early 1990s. I thought I remember its importation had been stopped. What can you tell me about this ammo? Is it accurate? What is it worth per box? Thanks.

It's combloc surplus that should shoot fine. Under normal conditions, it would be worth a few bucks a box. Under current conditions, it's worth whatever some ammo starved person will pay for it. Since December, decent quality 7.62x39 has gone from roughly 25c/round to more than double that.

It sounds like the old Norinco ammo - yellow box, steel core/steel case. It was marked non-corrosive, but I believe the primers were "mildly" corrosive (kinda like a little bit pregnant). Cases held 60 boxes (1200 rounds). It's considered good ammo.
Importation from China was halted in 1994. Selling prices are all over the board on the auction sites; from .50 to $1 per round. I'd expect a full case to bring between $700-$800 on GB. The recent spike in prices seems to be dragging it out of the woodwork and I see a case or two at most local gun shows. Asking prices are usually about $15/box, but it only seems to sell when it gets down to $10.

Re: Calling all SKS experts
Yellow boxes are Chinese. Good ammo, $0.50/round +/- unless someone really wants it bad.
Pics would help.
That ammo is not just for SKS. Its for anything chambered in that caliber. (Sks, AK47, Ruger mini30, Yugo Mauser M85, ...)

I bought three cases like that when import from China was stopped. Mine is the steel core that is preferred by some although it IS NOT armor piercing. It should sell for well north of .50/rd as I've seen a lot of it trade nearly a buck a round. BTW, I paid .02/rd closeout price from a distributor that just wanted to unload it.

Not much writing on the case. As I said, since it still has the metal band on it, I have not opened it. Guess I need to get out the tools.

Disappointed
Man, I thought you were going to start a discussion about SKSs. The SKS is on my short list for future gun buying. I guess I'll just have to start my own thread.

One thing to consider if you choose to run it through your SKS is to make sure it is positively 100% NOT corroded. There's lots of info about SKS firing pins getting jammed and hung up, and corrosive ammo is only one cause. I'm going to do the firing pin switch on my SKSs so I don't have to worry about pin problems due to ammo.

The priming on those is a chloride based compound in it's own right it is not corrosive like the mercury based compounds. BUT the use of this ammo leaves a small layer of "salt" inside the bore and gas system, and that attracts water out of the air causing rust. After use, clean and oil accordingly. That is why SKS's and AK style firearms came with the little metal bottle or double bottle for solvent and oil. Break-free CPL should be fine for this rifle, as opposed to the old "stink -----" cleaner our country used with 30-06 rifles. I has mid 70's Israeli 308 primed the same way. Ammo primed this way started in the mid 30 (Remington's old "Restless" priming)and continued in some foreign ammo to around 1980. No US 308 was made this way, but early 30 Carbine was. 30-06 was made with all 3 compounds, in my copy of Frank Barns' "Cartridges of the World", in the 30-06 section he lists by head stamp when we quit using the mercury based compound.
