Default I Need Build Suggestions For a Ruger 10/22

Yesterday I came across a deal I couldn't refuse on yet another Ruger 10/22 rifle for my collection. It's this version,

I'm not sure why they call it a 'Tactical', when this one is a lot more tactical,

I also posted that second one to rule it out as an option, as I already have one of that version that's tricked out and too much fun to shoot. I also have one with the Boyd's thumbhole stock and the Butler Creek heavy barrel. So I need ideas on what to do with this one. All suggestions and pics are welcome. I'm kind of favoring another tactical style, but not married to the idea.

I have to admit, getting a second identical and doing this looks like a blast.

The improved bolt hold/release is a must, otherwise it's kind of a pain to lock the bolt open and lower the bolt on a fresh magazine. I also had a friend install the trigger improvement parts from Midway on mine, dropped the trigger pull down to 3.5 pounds, both improvements cost about $50.

Everything else is cosmetic, unless you really want to spend money on accuracy stufff like a target barrel, trigger, etc.

By the way, the Gatling Gun kit doesn't work very well, very narrow cone of fire, accuracy is lame, just an expensive way to burn up now scarce ammo.

You make a good point there. I was mainly thinking of what stock to put on it, etc, but I think I need to do these upgrades to all of my 10/22's. By any chance do you have part #'s or links so I'll know what I'm looking at? Thanks

And yeah, I figured that Gatling gun wouldn't be very accurate, since the guns mount sideways. Kind of makes me want to look up that ad for Homeboyz Nitesites.

Midway part number 145-851, page 574 in thier master catalog gives you both the improved bolt release and trigger parts kit. It advertises that you get a 2.5 pound trigger pull, but in my rifle it wound up being 3.5 pounds, still good....

Just be careful if you mount the scope rail. Some of that model apparently had the forward screw holes stripped when the plugs were installed. Don't know if they had a newbie on the line or what but I bought the identical rifle and had to send mine back. Ruger was great about it and as soon as they do another run of those, they are shipping me a new one.

The build combinations on a Ruger 10/22 remind me of building a new Mini Cooper at their site.

I may have to buy that just for grins.

You could also go with a Reising build.

Thanks for the warning, maybe I'd better stay away.

And I thought I was bad wanting to turn this into a $700 rifle!

I just wish they'd have a drum magazine instead of a mock to attach to a 10 round.

Seeing all these options makes me wonder why Ruger doesn't sell just a really nice 10/22 receiver so we could build our own gun from the ground up. I think that's about the only factory part on my target gun.

I wonder if the BD 50 round drum would fit.

You can actually build a 10/22 from the ground up and never put a RUGER part on it, including the receiver.

A couple of firms make receivers, like this one from Tactical Innovations. You can also get complete trigger housings, bolts, and of course barrels and stocks.

I bought the all weather this winter. After the first time firing it, I ripped out the trigger. I went with a power custom kit, which replaces some parts and adds shims, around $60. I think they are called Grand something now.

Trigger was ****. Out of 100 rounds, 2-3 times, I thought it jammed cause the trigger got so bad. I haven't fired it alot since the upgrade though. Two friends, one got a good trigger, one **** too.

I ordered from Ruger 2 25 round mags, took a month to get here, height of frenzy.

I put a buffer in??, which in piece of rubber tube, that that slide hits.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. Sort of. I ordered this, and will put my new 10/22 in it for now, but eventually my Charger receiver and barrel will be mounted. With a 10" barrel it should look even more authentic. 50 round drum magazine and maybe a Hellfire to make things real fun.

But since that'll free up the rifle stock in a few months, I need to choose another setup for that one. Ahhhhh, such problems to have.....

I just (yesterday) got one of those M-1 stocks from Brownells; for my son's youth model 10/22; he had out grown the LOP on the Youth model.....

the 10/22 barrel and action dropped right in. With a 25rd. mag it does look like a M-1 carbine/30rd "banana" mag........ He already had a williams peep and fire sight mounted.

My guess is that the wood is "beechwood" or some such wood and with any hard use will need to be refinished in 4-5 years.

Old School looks a lot better to me than the newer "taticool" stuff.... for that I'll stick with a S&W15/22....LOL
