Remmy 870 Recoil Pad Grind to Fit
I got a nice looking polished blue Remmy 870 Wingmaster 12g with shiny gloss rear stock 18" barrel.
It will be for a small frame teen female. She is not afraid to shoot it which is a plus.
I also obtained a ruffy stock where it was cut approx 7/8" off the back and want to fit a grind to fit recoil pad for a better length of pull for her.
I will use my belt sander in a vise to grind one down.
I dont have any knowledge on recoil pads for a shotgun.
She will mainly use this shotgun for shooting skeet and target loads. I need to find her a longer vent rib barrel too but that can wait.
is there a preferred recoil absorbing pad that grinds easy?
thanks in advance

Remington now has a pad that is supposed to be very effective in reducing recoil. I forget the name and don't know how easy it is to install, but once in place, it's supposed to be excellent.

We have both been on the forum for quite a while so plese take this in the spirit in which it is intended.
Don't call it a Remmy. Please.
What nest? A Winnie-or perhaps a Smithie or God forbid a Rugie.

I shoot a lot of trap & skeet & sporting clays. Kick-eze makes a great pad that absorbs a bunch of recoil. My Browning O/U with the Kick-eze pad has less felt recoil than a 20 ga without one.

Pachmayr has been making recoil pads for years. They have a wide selection.

My Remington Marine Magnum has the cushy recoil pad on it and helps a lot with felt recoil. One of those might help her quite a bit.
Mine got all soft and gummy though. When I tried to buy a new one I found out they were warrantied by Remington as they'd had a problem with that. You might not want to buy any old stock for that reason.

I mounted a Pachmeyer on my 870 years ago. I think it was called the "Decellerator" or something like that. Worked great. But here's the tip: put it in your freezer for at least overnight, then grind and finish sand it. I used a file on mine before finish sanding. A belt sander or grinder generates a lot of heat so it may negate the freezing. The freeze-first tip came in the instructions. Not sure if it will work with all materials. Good luck.

Be sure to have the pad removed from the gun when grinding it to fit. The final sanding can be done (carefully) on the gun, but be sure to tape off the stock so it doesn't get sanded or filed.

the stock I got that was already cut....appears to be cut straight and is somewhat rough in finish.
I will fit the pad first then have to sand and refinish it.
the stock was given to me.

Use a new belt on the belt grinder and about 180 or 220 grit cuts cleanly and quickly.
Anything finer will cut of course but you'll start to round the surfaces off as you work it over more taking down the material.
Some of the softer pads don't cut as well with a belt much finer than a 220. You can always give it a once over with a 320 when done if you want to clean up the grit lines but it's usually not necessary.
Some of the very soft pads are supposed to cut better if left in a freezer for a while, then worked on,,but I've never had the problem to begin with. Just use the right pressure and a clean sharp belt.
If you square the wood off, then screw the pad on and grind it right down to the wood you'll get a perfect fit.
A quick refinish of the stock can be done with the pad in place now,,doesn't need to be a Griffin & Howe look-a-like.
An palm sander does a wonderful job and is used by most of the finishers though you won't get them to admit it.
It's very quick, follow it up with a once over block sanding.
Stain it if needed, then a couple of coats of tung-oil based varnish rubbed out and dry. That's about all the factory does,,they spray the finish on and bake it dry in a few minutes.
Then remove the pad, bolt the stock back on, tighten the pad back down and all is perfect with the world.

I started looking for the Rem recoil pad and found on the Midway site that the REMINGTON Super Cell Recoil Pad will only fit modern or recent manufacture shotguns.
So the Remington is out.
I will look at Pacmyer and Limb Saver.
I recall putting a Limb Saver on my Winchester (Not WINNY) Featherweight 270 some years back and the soft material was difficult to grind and does not line up perfectly as I only scribed a line on the hard plate of the pad.
Since my shortened stock is a donor that has no prettiness....I will fit it on the stock.
2152hq...thanks for the detailed instructions. I will follow them.

I took about an inch off my synthetic stocked Mossberg Maverick 12 gauge with a hacksaw. I got a crooked cut but the belt sander with an old belt squared it up perfectly. I then reinstalled the pad, taped off the stock with masking tape, and sanded the rubber down to fit the stock. I think I did a better job than the factory.

Yeah, the Rem. Super Cell pad was what I was thinking of. Didn't realize that stock dimensions on 870's had changed.
But your cut-down stock is going to need some custom fitting to any pad?
Best to you. Show us the eventual result.
