I'm in no way a professional writer nor am I an expert in any way on any type of gun. I love my S&W revolvers very much but I have been searching for a long time for a small yet reliable pistol that could be easily concealed in the pocket of a pair of jeans or dress pants. I do believe I came to the end of my search the other day when I purchased a Sig Sauer P238 (.380 caliber).

Physically and mechanically, the gun looks and operates the same as its big brother the model 1911. Its slide is very easy to rack which is an added plus for a female. When comparing the P238s ease of racking to a Beretta Cheetah I used to own, well, there is no comparison as the Cheetah's ease doesn't even come close. As with the model 1911, the hammer must be pulled rearward to initiate firing but what I believe makes the P238 even more appealing is this - If a person doesn't feel comfortable carrying it in "condition 1" (a round in the chamber, hammer pulled back, safety on and a loaded magazine), this pistol can be racked with the hammer pulled back, the safety on, loaded magazine in place with an empty chamber. In other words, the P238 can be carried with an empty chamber, a fully loaded magazine, the hammer cocked and the safety on. If the need arises for actual use, one quick rack of the slide and releasing the safety makes it ready for combat. Another big plus for this pistol is the stock SIGLITE Night Sights - the three dot configuration offers wonderful target acquisition in daylight and I would assume at night. As a side note, the stock magazine holds six rounds but an optional extended seven round clip with a "pinky finger floorplate" can be purchased. An included pressure holster rounds out the package and Sig also gives a one time 20% discount on any accessory when you register your gun online.

Its been raining alot here lately so I decided this morning to brave the elements and go fire it at the range. I threw the box away and forgot to write down the ammunition I used but at ten and twenty five yards, I was shocked at the accuracy in both slow and rapid fire - all rounds easily placed in the chest cavity of the man sized target I used. Disassembly at home for cleaning was a little tricky at first but it eventually came apart smoothly, cleaned up nice and went back together quickly.

So, they are pricey and if you're willing to reduce your "fire power" a little and want an easily concealable pocket / purse pistol, I'd have to tell someone to take a serious look at these little gems. I don't believe there is a better gun like this on the market and Sig Sauer has hit a home run!

I had the opportunity to both see and shoot a P238 and was quite impressed by it. Its basicly Sigs version of the Colt Mustang and I must say they did a great job of it. If I didn't already own a Mustang, I would consider buying one.

My wife has one and I think the best was to carry it is the hammer down on a loaded barrel and as one pulls the gun they should be pulling the hammer back at the same time. I was taught to draw a SA revolver by pulling the hammer back as the gun is coming out of the holster and it also works for me with the P238 and a Colt Govt. .45. I agree with you that they are nice pistols. Larry

Great report PA Reb. I've been looking for something like the P238 but discounted it because I was afraid it would be too small for my hand. I have fairly large hands and want something that isn't too small. I was looking at the Colt Govt and Mustang in 380, but have to admit your report has made me reconsider the Sig.

Thanks again for the report.

Couldn't agree more with your great review-am a P238 fan myself and very happy w/mine.
