Can Ruger Ranch mini-14 handle 5.56mm ammo?

The front cover of my Mini-14 manual clearly states .223 (5.56 mm) Caliber. Show me a blown Mini-14 that was caused by using 5.56.

I sold both my original blued Mini-14 and 1991 vintage Colt Lightweight Sporter carbine for darn near 4X what I originally paid because they were so-called 'Pre-Ban'.

Hard to tell which was more inaccurate. Both averaged 4in groups at 100yds with surplus ball ammo from a rest.

Yeah, I take my Mini-14 out every now and then and "pattern" it. You certainly wouldn't call them groups.

While mine isn't a benchrest target rifle, it will keep 100 yard groups inside 2". A trigger job is a great help.

I had a friend who shot cloverleaf 100 yard groups with his mini. Sadly, he passed away last year, and I never found out what he did to it, but he was an incurable tinkerer.

I've intended to tinker with mine a bit to try and improve groups, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Mine nor his are the later, heavier barrel models.

I think big&slow nailed it. .223 is a measurement, .223 remington is the cartridge. It is telling you what the caliber is, not what the cartridge is. Why would you label it in metric, and English? Ed

I have little respect for this company for mislabeling it!

Kind of a ridiculous statement. They didn't mis-label anything, basically the .223/5.56 are the same cartridge and interchangeable in most cases.

The military ammunition requires a chamber with a slightly longer throat than the civilian version .223 does. This is because of a difference in bullet profile. Ruger uses the military chamber dimensions.

It just bothers me that cartridge designations of all things are made to cause ambiguity and confusion. A famous example, "Pass me the ammunition for my M1." Now are you going to get something that looks like a 30-06 or a straight walled case that looks like it belongs in a revolver? I know that's the military for ya, but jeepers creepers. Is it any wonder that people are confused?

The correct ammunition for the Rifle, M1 was the Cartridge, Ball M2!:D

I think that any manufacturer that didn't make sure that their .223 rifles would fire Nato ammo would be foolish indeed, barrel marked or not.

Cav,

Excellent article.

I still chuckle at the memory of a M196 5.56 tracer round I fired in my Mini-14 at dusk into the far bank of a gravel pit. It was done for show. The tracer started to corkscrewed at 100 yards and put on quite a show for the remaining 200 yards, before hitting the far bank of the pit. The observers applauded as they would for fireworks.

I have a Mini-30 that was made in 1990. I have put 20 shots into a 1" group at 50 yards from a rest. I do have a scope on the rifle. I have not shot it at a longer range.
