I'm looking at purchasing this handgun, ~98% but know little about the Hi-Power. Do any of you fellows know if this is a Captain model or have any idea of the model. I know it's newer since it was assembled in Portugal. THanks!

Yes it is the Captain's Model. You can tell by the adjustable sight. My guess from late 1970's or early 80's. Buy it you will enjoy it.

I think the Capitan model has a different sight.
One that is longer and graduated out to a very long yardage. It looks different than the one shown.

I remember when those came out but don't recall what they were
named. A similar one to the one you posted was listed on GunBroker as "the C Model." HTH.

I have a couple of BHPs. Good guns, fun to shoot, and feel fine in the
hand. I have mags from a bunch of different makers too, and they
all work.

Westcoast362 is correct, the Captain Model has a Military type tangent sight with elevation beyond the effective range of the 9MM.

Beyond the effective range is putting it mildly! I think those sights are calibrated out to 450 yards. Talk about optimistic, and ugly.

I LOVE my early 1980's adjustable sight target model High Power. One of the sweetest shooting 9MM's ever.

Mr. Browning got it right with the BHP...He didn't do bad with the 1911 Colt. Some people just are a lot smarter than the average guy..How do I know? well how long have those two models been around? and both are still being made and used....... It sure can be hard to improve on perfection.....

Looks like a standard BHP still in the catalog today. My first centerfire auto was a BHP. I had class even back then...the only problem is everything else is just a bit of a letdown after that.

Sub-moa, I too was wondering if the rear sights were original to the gun. But I can live with the ones on there . Thanks!

The rear sight is a Millett opaul and was OEM on late '80s Sport Models...BUT, there were folks who were unhappy with the Type A (Beer Can) rear sight of the first '70s Sport Models as well as the later and short lived square/sharp Type B rear sight and replaced them with Milletts...

Also, note the front sight is the original soldered front sight...and not the dovetailed front sight introduced with the MkIII slide...and current today. AND, the thumb safety is the original nubbin and not the extended ambi thumb safety of later/current MkIII/Standard pistols.

Sub-moa, I found a link on the web and it appears that this is a early 1980's sport model just as you described. I again am amazed at the knowledge and feedback afforded in this forum.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to look at my photo and provide feedback.

If anybody (besides ACP230) cares, the tangent sighted Hi Power is the Capitan, not Captain.

Buck

Hey Buck. Ain't it the El Capitan? ;):D Seriously,I've heard it and seen it listed both ways. Actually, all three ways, since capitan is just Spanish for captain. Don't recall ever seeing ANY of them on a parts sheet though.

on the box it says capitan. those tangent sights work out as far as 100yds. anyway. that is my max distance I can shoot.

There is more than one version with tangent sights and what appears in the OP doesn't seem to be either:

TANGENT SIGHT MODEL This version is similar to the standard Hi-Power with the addition of an adjustable rear sight calibrated to 500 meters. There were approximately 7,000 imported between 1965 and 1978. NOTE: If the grip frame is slotted to accept a detachable shoulder stock, add approximately 20 percent to the value; but be wary of fakes. Add an additional 10 percent for “T” series serial numbers.

HI-POWER CAPITAN This is a new version of the Hi-Power model fitted with tangent sights. Introduced in 1993. Furnished with walnut grips. Weighs about 32 oz. Assembled in Portugal.

Here's a photo of a BHP with Tangent sights:

I'm thinking the OP Hi-Power is an adjustable sight version of the standard blued pistol with a spur hammer. I have one just like it. A great pistol:)
