Default COLT PYTHON MARKINGS ON BARREL QUESTION

Hello
I was wondering if there are any Colt Python experts on this forum?
The reason I ask is that I looked at a unfired colt python with a 4 inch barrel, and with a blue finish.
I noticed on the barrel, on the side away from the cylinder release, there was a marking that I had never seen before. It was to the right of the colt stamping, and looked like 3 dots, about a quarter of an inch apart. They looked like they were made with a very small punch. The revolver is 3000.00 and is claimed to be unfired.
I was going to make an offer on it, but those marks just do not look right.
Anyone know anything about these marks? I know this is the S&W forum, but I thought I would ask.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly foreign proofmarks? Usually in front of the cyl/frame area. Sounds like one to pass on if you're unsure. For 3K you surely should find one nib without any questionable marks imo.

Thanks for the reply.
I agree, that is way too much for that revolver. One guy that looked at it thought maybe it was a factory defect.

That's an indicator how many slugs were stuck in the barrel.

No such markings on my Pythons. A quick look on Gunbroker at some 4in guns shows no such marks either.

Default I need some info in a Colt Python !

I have a 1966 2&1/2" Colt Python ,I am the second owner no box, but the Colt is in about 98+ % condition , this is what has me puzzled , the side plate that is original to the gun never had the Rampant Colt stamped on it . I have many other Colts & all have the "colt" stamped on the side-plates . All the Pythons I have looked up on line have the Rampant Colt stamped on. Any info would help . It has not been re-blued, all other markings are crisp . Thanks !

Georgetargetshooter:
Welcome! People will try to answer your question here, but you're really better off registering over at the Colt Forum. They actually have a subforum in the Colt Revolver section dedicated just to Pythons.
Actually, Cobra44, if nobody here has any definite ideas, and you want to pursue it further, you should probably do the same thing.
