I stepped outside my realm last night at an auction and bought a 12 ga double barrel made in 1882. The barrels are thirty inches long. The serial number is 5102. Since I know very little about old sxs guns, I was wondering if someone could shed some light on the gun. I really would like to find out if the barrels are Damascus or Fluid steel. I can attach any pictures needed.
You have a model 1882 Remington. The cheapest grade was a grade 1 with decarbonized steel barrels at a cost of $45.00. The next was a grade 2 with twist barrels at $55.00. The next was a grade 3 with laminated or damascus barrels at $65.00. There were higher grades that had better wood and engraving. It is hard to tell from your photos but it appears to be a grade 1 with decarbonized steel barrels. I personally would not shoot that gun. If you should choose to shoot the gun you should have it checked by a competent gunsmith that is knowledgeable in this area and this will not be your typical local smith.
I doubt I shoot it. If I do it would be with black powder loads only. I bought it because mechanically it seems to be in good condition. The barrels are pitted but I guess that is common considering the type of corrosive powder they used in the 1880s. Thanks for sharing the information.
