Most Overrated OR Underrated Hand Gun, In Your Opinion?

Over-rated: I will get in line with the Pythons and Glocks. Why? The Python is a beautiful gun but it is not (nor are the Glocks) really any better than other quality guns. Good guns? Sure. The best? There is no "best"...only opinion. My Python trigger, while smooth, stacked horribly. Glocks are fine as well but far from perfect with square grips and have their share of complaints.(being butt ugly doesn't help!)

Under-rated? K frame revolvers. I know there are tons of K frame fans so maybe under-rated isn't the best description, but the K frame doesn't deserve the bad rap it gets on durability...internet fodder mostly...I own more than a few.:)

GREAT TOPIC & GOOD POINTS

Glocks as both over & under rated I agree, a good/ reliable tool at a decent price. To rate a mfg'r as good/bad when their top of the lines are great & "economy" models stink is kind of unfair, (Sig Sauer/ Kimber). I too notice a lot of people having troubles at the range with Kimbers. Maybe they are just newbies caught up in the 1911 craze. most underated caliber IMO 9mm. Many guns that will/do work well for many could be called underrated, for revo's (for me) the Ruger speed/security 6's, for semi's underrated the Sig 239. OVERRATED calibers the 30-06 & 45acp, hold the hate mail. Yes they are quite good for intended purposes, but there's nothing magical about them & to the legions of fanatical fans of these calibers, I pray your leash doesn't break.

Overrated Handgun: The Luger, with most Colt revolvers not far behind.

Most Underrated Handgun: The CZ75 and its derivatives, the range of Star pistols from Spain.

Most overrated rifle: Mauser K98 with the Garand a close second.

Most underrated rifle: MAS 49/56.

"The HK P7 family. They are incredibly accurate with a single action trigger once it is cocked. There is very low felt recoil due to the low bore axis."

I am not easily impressed, but after I bought mine, I stumbled upon another (not as nice cosmetically) and bought it for my son. I used to carry his rather than mine, until he turned 21 and asked for it. Both of these are commercial models.

I don't think these fall into to "over rated" OR " under rated" catagories. No one who owns one (including yours truly) would ever say anything bad about them & all the hype about them is absolutely TRUE !! :)

Underrated? Two. The Makarov and the Polish P65, Both in 9x18. Mine are cheap and reliable with horrible double action triggers. SA triggers are "usable". Accuracy is surprisingly good.

Underrated: CZ. Although I don't know if they are so much underrated as disregarded. Those who know them rate them very highly, but as Acco40 said, you rarely see them on the shelves. The one time I saw a CZ75, I bought it.

Overrated: I don't think I know enough to have an opinion. On the strength of what I read here, though, I wouldn't buy a Kimber. I probably would not pay the price for a Sig or HK, but I just think they are expensive, not overrated.

Over rated: H&K P7. After a few magazines of combat course firing or a regular qualifications course of fire, holding onto that hot potato has a somewhat negative affect on its accuracy. Nothing like a burning trigger finger to help your score.

Under rated: Small caliber mini revolvers such as the .22 mag single actions made by North American Arms. Great hideaway guns.

Overrated: the 1911. As a Gunner's Mate in the Navy, when we were on the range, clearing malfunctions was a full time job. At the time, I figured it was because some of those old pistols had seen better days. A few years later, I had a brand new Springfield Armory 1911A1 that would jam with hardball ammo! I spent a lot of time and money to make it shoot, and then it would shoot Speer 200 gr. Gold Dot HP (the flying ashtray) perfectly. But like I said, it took time and money.

Underrated: the good old S&W Model 10. Among shooters who know better it's not, but I know a bunch of guys in the "black and plastic" crowd, and to them, the Model 10 is an unusable dinosaur, not worthy for consideration as an actual weapon.

Surprised to hear about the unreliability oof the Colt M 1911. I shot on an army pistol team for two years. We shot thousands of rounds our of our 45s, and during matches I've seen at lease 100 45s on the line at once. Being match grade pistols they werre fittted tighter and should have had more malfunctions, but they were few and far between. Most of them were due to worn magazine lips and tired magazine springs.

Most underrated.
1. Ruger Security Six revolvers.
2. Rock Island Armory 45s, any of their numerous variations.

Over-rated:
The pre-64 Winchester Model 70.
Mauser-style controlled feed
Three- position safeties on bolt actions (see model 70). I find them a royal pain for hunting. To keep it quiet when readying to fire you have to use thumb and trigger finger, vs shotgun-style web or Rem 700 that just require a thumb & allow the rest of the hand to stay in firing position .
P&R S&Ws (especially the "R" part)
The 1911. Great gun, but it just doesn't rate the mystique that's built around it. I won't go into detail about it.

Underrated:
SKB O/U Shotguns.
Agree about Dan Wesson.
Original Ruger M77 rifle
Ruger #3 Carbine.
91/30 Mosin Nagant. Most un-glamorous rifle there is, but rugged, reliable, and capable of incredible accuracy. And cheap.

Overrated: All of the new, black, plastic, high capacity, tactical semi autos.

Underrated: Revolvers and anything chambered for the 9X18.

Yes, I do own and enjoy a couple of Glocks.

Overrated: I join those who put Kimbers in this category. I had one, had constant problems even with two trips back to the factory, and never will buy one again.

Underrated: My Ruger P97dc. When I bought it NIB about 20 years ago it was the least expensive 45acp in the store (which is why I got it). It has never once had the least problem, even when firing the worst crappy ammo. It may not be the most accurate, but it shoots good enough for my capability. After thousands of rounds it works as good as the day I got it.

I believe the Ruger DA revolvers are low-rated with good reason. Yes, they are "built like a tank." (How many times has someone written that, even me, on this site?), yes, they are reliable. They are a good duty or self defense weapon, especially if you need to beat someone into submission with your weapon. The trigger pull is atrocious. At least it has been on the couple of examples I have owned. I don't like the general ergonomics, either.

See, I'm comparing them to S&W DA revolvers, and they fall way short when that comparison is made. This wasn't so bad when they were $100-$150 cheaper on the used market, but now they seem to bring nearly as much.

Overrated: I think I have to agree with Kimbers in 0.45. However, I do own and shoot two inexpensive 1911s, a Norinco and a Ballester-Molina. Both accurate and with good to excellent triggers.

Underrated: The S&W 1905 and later K-Frames in all calibres. I own them in 32-20, 38 S&W, 38 Special and 357, All still have excellent triggers, in particular some of the early ones from the 1910 -1940 era. With only 6 shots you learn to be accurate! Dave_n
